J.B Grimes
Marcello tweeted this morning where Grimes has resigned from UCONN. Might be nothing.
I'm good with this. i liked Grimes and thought that he left because he wanted to go coach with his son while he still could and spend more time with family.
I'd be curious if we hire Grimes' son, Nick, as a off-field coach for special teams and tight ends as that is what he is doing now.
Grimes was a good coach that knew Malzahn's system. He is a very good run block coach but was always questionable in the pass protection category. I want to see how he does in Lindsey's offensive scheme before saying this a good hire or not.

I think Grimes is the best OL coach we have had in the last 10 years. Craig was an awesome recruiter, but WR development was non-existent while he was here. Let our big hitter recruiters do the heavy lifting in that area, OL coach needs to know how to coach!

Classic Gus hire

This was a fast band- aid hire. Not because Grimes is not a good coach but because he is close to retirement and Gus took the easy fast route. GM has no coaching tree and no connections to strong candidates. That’s a big problem.

Had the same thought. We were such a run-heavy team when he was her last, it'll be interesting to see what happens here.
I'd like to hope Larry Porter and Lindsey might help Grimes out with OL recruiting. I definitely prefer his coaching and development to Hand's.

Good think we brought a recruiter on for our 10th coach.

This is the laziest of lazy hires. If you thought that "Gus changed", think again. J.B. Grimes is a pretty good technical coach, but set the freaking expectations a bit higher here Gustav you little shite.

This.

He's been a HC for 6 years. That's not much time to grow a "coaching tree".

He comes from the high school ranks not college ranks. Thus no relationships and experience with college coaches. Nor has he learned by great college coaches. That’s what I mean by coaching tree.

Stat from a B. Matthews article about the Grimes hire.
quote:
In three seasons under Grimes, Auburn allowed 52 sacks. In two seasons under Hand, the Tigers were sacked 55 times. ** Of course, Nick Marshall wasn't easy to sack

I don't know if that's a good or bad stat honestly

Probably a quick hire for NSD to be honest. If Grimes only has a few seasons or two left, this may not be a bad idea by Gus if getting the hire in place can somehow help us land at least one of the remaining OT's on our board. Then Gus can use next season or the one after to search for a long term replacement for the OL coach.
He's not a bad coach, just didn't seem to have much of an eye for OT talent. I'm undecided on it until some more things play out.

He hired steele and Larry Porter that’s pretty good for a high school coach with no connections.

To me this was a good hire, we got a guy that already understands the run blocking schemes and is familiar with the system. Not many teams run the spread the way Gus does so it is harder to find good fits. Grimes understands what Gus expects and how he wants it blocked.

Grimes was responsible for signing Braden Smith. So he can recruit a lil bit. I'd get Garner to help him.

I would not be surprised if hand leaving was a surprise to Gus. Grimes is a fantastic stop gap to allow some continuity and allow Gus time to find a longer term solution for OL coach.

It doesn't seem so, given the chatter around NYE and his contract. But who knows?

Remind me: why did J.B Grimes leave the first time?
