Marcello tweeted this morning where Grimes has resigned from UCONN. Might be nothing.

Serious question. How does Grimes compare to hand:
A. Developing players
B. Recruiting

I feel like Hand is a better recruiter, but I can’t remember year-to-year who brings in whom.

He's coming to Auburn.

Do we like the return hire? I felt like he did decent when he was here but then again I feel like we had to rely on transfers after he left

Check out my last post in recruiting thread. Just went year by year on who recruited whom

Hand is the better recruiter but I think Grimes is better at developing talent. I am not stoked by this hire because was hoping AU was gonna get someone that felt confident could do both at high level. But I don't hate the hire either as I felt Grimes did a good job with the talent on hand when he was here last. I think it will really help guys like Ashley & Sammons. But the worry is 2-3 years down the road will he be able to keep AU well stocked with talent

Grimes is probably one of the best technical coaches out there. He is great at teaching technique and developing players. His recruiting was meh, but Hand recruited better players but that dont mean shite if you cant teach them. Raw talent only gets you so far. Most linemen out of HS rely on raw talent. When you go up agianst better competition technique wins. Just look at Gregg Robinson.

We had no true OTs on our roster after three years of JB Grimes. This is not a good thing

Source: J.B. Grimes, who spent last season at UConn, headed back to Auburn as Tigers’ OL coach, replacing Herb Hand. Grimes was at Auburn from 2013-15

Good ol Pee Paw Grimes. I seem to remember many thinking his departure last time was more of a "look for other options" deal. I always liked him and think hes a good coach, but wouldve liked some flesh blood. This feels like a stop gap.

Grimes develops better while Herb is a better recruiter: advantage Grimes as Herb still wasn’t that great of a recruiter.
Grimes helped develop G- Rob for our system as well as:
Coleman
Avery Young
Dismukes (Remington)

Don’t forget, Grimes got in the action late for Braden Smith and still brought him on board. He isn’t a terrible recruiter.

2014 sacks allowed Penn St 124th AU 13th

2015 sacks allowed Penn St 113th AU 33rd

2016 sacks allowed Penn St 44th AU 25th

2017 sacks allowed Penn St 75th AU 114th

Looking at these numbers, I guess you could either argue Herb sucks as a coach, or he recruited well and left Penn St with some better players.

I liked Grimes when he was here. Don’t remember the recuiting problems that others do though. Seems like Hand has had more trouble

In his first 2 classes we signed 2 JUCOS, Deion Mix & Braden Smith. Smith is only one that turned into anything. None were offensive tackles which is why we have had to rely on transfers past couple of seasons

His 2015 class hit on Horton & Harrell but again weak at OT. Tega was recruited as a DE & switched over. Our current OT pool all came from Hand (Sammons, Ashley, Troxell)

Edit: I am being disingenuous on Ashley. He's really a bridge recruit so will give Grimes some credit there. Point still stands that Grimes struggled to find OT talent in his 3 recruiting classes previously at AU. Hand wasn't the powerhouse recruiter we had hoped but he was a step up from Grimes

Grimes swung for the fences and missed on Martez Ivey in 2015 and then got Horton as the backup plan. I can not fault him for missing big.
Regardless of Herb being a better recruiter or not, we never got to benefit from his recruiting prowess. We have a roster of 85+ dudes and we are still having to hit the GT market for OL starters while we have players like Carr, Sharp, Sammons and Kim doing nothing but eating schollys.

I dont recall an OL under Grimes getting owned. I cant get those images out of my head under Hand. I'll take a developer over a recruiter any day. Especially with the emergence of UGA as a superpower in the east. We will have to hold our own against better talent.

The OL definitely regressed in 2014... with that being said, I’d take that 2014 OL in a heartbeat compared to what we had this year... we’d be sec and national champs.
