Remind me: why did J.B Grimes leave the first time?
Supposedly to go coach at Cincy with his son.

He was pushed out. Long before he "left to go coach with his son" (LOL) there were constant rumors about him being moved to an off-field role. Wasn't cutting it in recruiting and he was struggling with workload. This was back when Gus' arse was dangling and he was being pressured to make changes.

Got anything to back that up?

Wasn't that about the time he was kicking cancer's arse?

Yeah, audio recordings and everything.
You know how long he "coached with his son" for? All of one season. His son isn't even at Cincinnati anymore. So he left his cushy job at a top SEC school to take a paycut to go coach with his grad-assistant son for less than a full calendar year before both went their separate ways to other schools? Makes sense. That seems believable to you?
Just like Rhett Lashlee, the talk behind the scenes regarding Grimes was clear and consistent. Both eventually "voluntarily" took huge demotions, you know, by their own free will. If they did indeed choose to leave, its because they knew that they were hanging by a thread anyway. J.B. Grimes was struggling big time with workload, you can't have that in the freaking SEC competing against Alabama who Saban has running like a Chinese sweatshop.

That makes no sense. I have a hard time believing someone like Grimes would come back to the work under someone who fired him. Especially with him just taking a job at UCONN.

This. He was pushed out yet chooses to come back in the same environment he just left?

Didn't they both leave when Tuberville quit?

One word to describe Gus's off season assistant coaching hires - underwhelming

Also if Gus wanted him gone why would he then bring him back?

Yeah, wish he would have landed Charles Kelley over Steele like we all wanted. frick...

Kevin Steele, Travis Williams & Larry Porter all seem like solid hires
He also pulled in Muschamp, T-Rob, Thompson & McGriff in the past

Pushing him out wasn't Malzahn's choice, that is why its not surprising that he's back. I don't think that Malzahn would have moved him out, just like he was incredibly reluctant to move Lashlee out (and he delayed that by 1-2 years).
Malzahn has job-security now, so there isn't much risk here from Grimes' end.

Ah, so Gus was forced to push him out by the higher ups, but now they are fine with him coming back on?

FWIW I like Woodson but ya Grimes is a bit of an underwhelming move. I am hopeful he will at least develop guys we have on roster now

Kinda agree with metafour here.
I think Gus was thrown off that Hand took a job this week. I think Gus thought he’d take something after NSD. This additional coach thing allows schools to hire coaches before moving another one, and I’m not sure Gus realized that a school like Texas would make that move.
I think the Grimes hire was a panic move, probably more focused on the short term. Not necessarily bad, but to me it points out that Gus thought he would have time in February to recruit a better OL coach

That is fine, and I said as much earlier in the thread. That is very different from JB was forced out (either by Gus or the higher ups) and is just inexplicably perfectly fine to bring on now.
