is this a bad area in Sarasota?

It is right off Martin Luther King Pkwy. You know what Chris Rock said about that.

There is a small pocket of "bad area" right there. Its very small. Near the high school. Crazy but it is also 2 blocks from the gulf which is high end real-estate. I live about 4miles east of that area. One exit south.

My wife and I call this area of Florida "pocketedy". A term we used when we were looking for a new house here. You go along and there are million dollar neighborhoods, then 1/4 mile away is some serious hood. Bradenton has that a lot. Its the main reason we didnt buy there in West Bradenton. I think that is where 88tiger lives and it is where my shop is.

That type of thing doesnt happen ofter here but it happens just like everywhere else.

Sad

Put it this way. I wouldn't be down there at night. Even if I were a teen or young adult. It isn't the nicest area.

My parents live across the street from Sarasota High School towards the Bay. That area is pretty nice. If you go East of there it's where the Amish live.

The only "bad" areas I know are North of downtown towards Bradenton.

Been more than ten years since I’ve been there but it didn’t seem too bad. Outside of Siesta Key, it was a little bit lower income because the only industry there is retail and elderly care.

And tourism I guess. But it’s not like other Florida beach areas.

Hard to make out what is what. Seems maybe 2 separate incidents.

One involving the teens at 10ish pm.

Second this guy involved in someway the shooting where Battie was shot around 3-330am.

Maybe they are the same story maybe they aren’t but it’s definitely confusing by the reporting.

Yeah it looks like 2 different shootings a few hours apart

Shooting #1 - 10PM @ 31 Street and Osprey Avenue. 14 & 15 year old shooters

Shooting #2 - 3:30AM @ 3400 block of 17th street. Darryl Brookins shot Tommie and Brian Battie

Small update on Battie, he was still intubated/sedated as of a few hours ago. Going on 4 days now.

Usually at this point if a brain injury occurred it wouldn’t be a good sign they still have him sedated. Could be a case of the family keeping him alive even with no chance of a real recovery.

Wife is a former trauma nurse at UAB, hope she’s wrong about this one.

Unfortunately, I think she’s right, Smuph.

Same thing happened to a close friend of mine after a motorcycle accident. He had no brain activity and after a week on a breathing machine, they pulled the plug and he didn’t wake up.

So sad for all involved parties…

They can do scans for brain activity
And doctors won’t let you hope for days to “come back to life”. Like I said I don’t think we should be speculating on condition if not released by someone that definitely knows.

I’m still hoping for the best.

Sedation is for the intubation.
Intubation means a machine shoved down the throat helping the body breathe or fully breathing for the patient. Obviously a patient needs to be sedated with a tube down the throat. Big question is how much the machine is helping the body breathe. Sometimes intubation can be precautionary to help the body rest.

I was just about to ask if anyone had updates. Absolutely terrible what's happened. If he's still here, there's still hope right?

There is always hope.

But nothing about his current condition would give a medical team hope.

Continue to pray for him and his family.

Reality show Untold Stories of the ER details many cases of victims of awful bullet wounds to the head. With expert care they survived what initially looked like a hopeless outcome. Going on to have some kind of normal life. Keep praying!

Brookins has been charged with murder, attempted murder and as a felon in possession of a firearm. He has four prior felony convictions, according to a probable-cause affidavit released by the Sheriff’s Office.

quote:

Video footage obtained from the surrounding businesses showed a Black male suspect, later identified as Brookins, seen leaning against a window of the plaza when the Battie brothers approach him. At that point, Brookins drew a firearm and began shooting at the brothers, the affidavit states. The Battie brothers both returned gunfire, at which point Brian was seen falling to the ground, followed by his brother.

Brookins fled on foot, traveling east on 17th Street. In the hours following the shooting, detectives received multiple Crimestoppers tips indicating Brookins shot the Battie brothers.

West Bradenton. I think that is where 88tiger lives

I live in NW Bradenton. I agree with the pockets. There hasn't been a real problem in my neighborhood in the 20+ years we have lived here except for some teens taking stuff out of unlocked cars.

The Osprey shooting, = Not a good place to be late at night
The Hookah area = Not a bad area but when folks are pulling guns not a good sign on either part.

You are correct about 1/4 mile making a difference. Friends of ours are building a home on the water (multi-million) & across from 41 will be around MLK. but where they are building is really nice.

San Diego was similar when I lived there. One street full of gang activity a couple streets over none. Great neighborhood no gangs. It was unreal.
