Wow, he averaged under 40 yards per punt last year.

I believe they said Marshall put on quite a bit of good weight in the offseason. Must have given him a little more umph in his giddyup.

Correct. Marshall took the off-season very seriously and added 27 pounds. Coaches might have gotten in his ear saying they were going to bring someone else in because that and knowing a big leg was being recruited to come in drove him.

Competition is now very close. I think Siposs has the bigger leg but a little less consistent while Marshall has good distance now with continued consistency. It was reported early on that Siposs was rugby-style kicking, no spiral -- which is not necessarily a bad thing but Marshall may be getting better hang-time with good enough distance kicking spirals. Pure speculation there though and the place Siposs trained at in Australia has produced 5 Ray Guy winners, they have a reputation to defend and would not have told AU to take him if he didn't have the potential.

Malzahn had this to say about the deciding factor on who will win the job:
quote:

"Trust, who earns it and who has the best numbers at the end of the day," Malzahn said. "We put them in a lot of different situations, put them in some live situations and even had some more today. So, it's more who earns it and who we trust."

Glad we have Ian Shannon on scholarship

You can fair catch anywhere inside the 25 and it’s brought out to the 25

They should go ahead and just remove the kickoffs from the game. They have done everything they can to eliminate it. Moving the placement up, now fair catch gets you to the 25. They obviously do not want it in there, just remove it and move on.

If Stidham went out for the season, I bet that redshirt would be coming off of Gatewood real fast.

Depends when the injury occurred. Gatewood and Sandberg can play 4 games each as the back up.

Still can’t get over the size of Gatewood up close. If he can’t fall down for three yards then something is very wrong.

The last time I saw and talked to him, he was in 10th grade. I'm 6'3, and he was as tall as me. I couldn't believe he was only a sophomore.

Haven't forgot about the 2014 start, not at all. BUT, of the first five games, LSU was probably the most formidable opponent. And some how we ended up with the status quo of an 8 win season. Four of the first five games should have been a win by playing mediocre ball. Again, the LSU game was a beatdown (at home of course). Moreover, we were returning a deep core group of guys. Wouldn't it be nice not to take 4-5 games and actually use the spring and fall camp to determine what we have when we don't have a team returning like we did in 14?

If Gatewood was not ready, how do you think we would do just pulling out the Nick Marshall offense 2.0 for Malik. I think he would do well, but Nick was just special.

I would like to think that we would do well with that offense right now but honestly, we just dont have the guys as we know. We dont have a left tackle that could dominate like Robinson did and we dont know if we have a back that could take that kind of pounding and have the eyes Tre Mason did. I think Cox would be OK leading but who really knows if Malik would gel with one of out backs.

I still think Malik would be #2 if JS went down. Just not sure how well he would do with downfield passes.

If Malik isn't ready yet then Gatewood sure as hell won't be.

There is almost zero chance Gatewood has a significant portion of the playbook under his belt. If, god forbid, he were to come in, we'd be running very few plays.

I'm still concerned about QB recruitment and development under Gus, all of his successful QBs have been transfers.(Cam, NM, JS) Even Chris Todd had a good year before his shoulder injury and he was a transfer also.

I mean....we recruited all these guys, they just went somewhere else before they came to AU. So all's well.

It’s not like all those dudes stepped one AUs campus as finished products ready to win SEC titles.

QB development concerns, while definitely not a highlight of the Malzahn Era, are greatly overblown imo.
