Remember when Chris Beard was just a fluke and not an upgrade from Anderson?

Year 2.

If only Fayetteville had the recruiting draw and basketball history of Lubbock, am I right?

But it takes ten years to be good in basketball, in a state that produces quality players every year.

Mike just needs more time. Look at how long Beard had to take Tech limping into the tournament to "set the standard" for recruits.

Imagine what he’ll do when he actually has a practice facility. Everyone knows that you can’t have a good team if you aren’t serious about your basketball facilities

I know it's a petty thread but I do want some serious conversation here. What advantage, besides a better coach, does the Texas Tech basketball program have over Arkansas? Hell, throw Auburn in the conversation too. Seems some programs have missed the memo that you have to be mediocre as hell for 5 years after a coaching change before taking off. Texas Tech was one season removed from five straight losing seasons when Beard got there. Getting harder to say it's anything other than the guy calling the shots.

Big 12 is not great this year. We're probably as good as Tech

As opposed to our freshman-laden team?

We just whiff on coaches at a ridiculous rate. Seems like the majority of our hires look fine on paper, but then we stick with them for way longer than we need to and pass up opportunities along the way. That's definitely been the case with Mike and Bert. Maybe the new AD will bring a noticeable change as far as that goes.

Maybe, and probably, the orders come from over his head too. Who knows.

I don't blame Long for not going after Beard. We knew he was going to end up at a p5 school, and those that saw UALR play in the tournament that year really wanted him, but the stock on Mike was also at a high point that year as it was the first time in a while we'd actually made noise in the first weekend. Unlucky timing there, but I do agree we've stuck with Mike for way too long considering the results. We fired Heath for the same shite, but because it's Mike and his style tickles everyone's nostalgia bone he gets a pass, it seems. I wasn't even salty having him through the rest of his old contract, but the extension threw me overboard. Are we really ok with 5 more years of this?

The comparison to Heath isn't really there.

Heath never won a tournament game. He only had a winning conference record 1 season. Mike has only had one season with a losing conference record.

Mike has won 25+ games twice. He's averaged 21 wins per season.

From 1995 through 2010, we averaged 18 wins per season. That's 15 years, 3 different head coaches (4 if you count the guy who saw how bad of shape the program was in and ran out).

Has Mike accomplished anything great yet? No, I don't know if he will either. But I don't see how you can call his tenure a failure to this point. Especially considering the APR mess he inherited.

Really that extension seems just as Jeff Long-ish as the crazy arse extension Bert got after a 7-6 season. Except Mike got his in the midst of a big letdown year for some inexplicable reason

Mike has the worst assistant coaching staff in all of basketball.

I'm including HS, Jr. High and Upward Bound in that statement. All means All They are really really really bad. For sure nobody will ever make a run at one of them.

We don't coach sound defense. We trap and harass. We really have no offense when our defense isn't working. Its pretty much that simple. Mike won't ever beat a team with strong guard play, good rebounding and salty defense. Force any of his teams into a half court game and it'll get ugly quickly.

Tell me where I'm wrong and I won't argue back if you provide examples.

If we don't make the tourney this year, we damn sure won't make it in 2019. How hot will Mike's arse be?

According to Dale, Mike will retire here.

Would be excited for Beard to get a look here at tUofA.

Maybe Mike will get us to the sweet 16 in 2020

Failure? No. But it becomes more and more obvious with each passing season that Anderson is not a coach on the level of those that compete at the end of March. You brought up the APR mess and the state the program was in, how is it a guy can take his first P5 job in Lubbock fricking Texas and be top 10 in two years? I've mentioned this before but Bill Self had TULSA in the Elite 8 in Year 3. Good coaches win no matter where they are. Beard won at UALR, he's winning at Tech. Marshall is winning at Wichita State. Do you think Texas Tech after five straight losing seasons was a better job/in a better position to succeed than Arkansas? It all seems like noise and excuses after watching what Marshall, Beard, Pearl, etc. have done.

I honestly don't know the specifics of the situation at Tech. I don't think it has ever been a better job than Arkansas. It's very possible it was a better setup for short term success.

I also think Beard is a good coach. Maybe better than Mike. Maybe not. Mike has still has a better resume at this point.

Neutral floor vs Tech would be a toss up game.
