I’m not against it, but I think defense coaches translate better for some reason. Like offensive coaches their systems get found out and typically can’t adjust.

I doubt we ever pay that to buy a coach out.
It's why we will go hire somebody like Biff Pogi to replace Sam.
Dan Lanning grew up 3 hours from Fayetteville.
Dan Lanning's wife grew up in Kansas City
Cut his coaching teeth in the south, (Bama, Memphis, UGA)
Won a National Championship as a DC
Is young and has some piss and vinegar in his veins.
$20 million is an investment. We either want to win or we don't.

But cutoffs and cigars? I’d drink a cold beer with him.

If we're being honest with ourselves 95% of the posters on this forum know we won't drop that much coin good investment or not.

I wanted BMFP to be our OC, but knew it wouldn’t happen, so I was hoping we would go for Mullen.
Mullen would probably do well here. He doesn’t like to recruit, so he would be capped where ever he goes. And I don’t want him because of that.

We definitely won’t be doing that.
We should do that for Lanning then make his buyout on his end twice as much as left on his contract. And our the normal 75% or whatever.

Sam would be crazy to do that. Not because it wouldn't work, but because the first game lost due to defense, fans would be screaming for BP as HC

We're probably capped out at about the 18th best class anyway. Not sure there's any point in hiring a great recruiter, unless it's someone like Prime who can get 5 stars to an FCS school. I'd rather have someone who can get the most out what they have.
Mullen seems like a decent fit but I would just question his drive at this point.

First game lost this year and we were calling for his head.
I would think more likely we would name Bobby the coach in waiting and push Sam out quicker. But at least he would have learned how to recruit.

You’re probably right, be cool to get top 10, but I doubt that will happen. Lowest to ever win national championships were top 10 and they had two generational quarterbacks (Clemson with Deshaun and Trevor). The rest have had at least a number 1 class in the previous 3 years.
But Merlins might at least get us to the play offs. I’m not against it completely.

Merlins would at the very least keep us competitive

Transfer era creates some opportunities for those outside the top 10, if you want an optimistic view

Yeah I think they will have to start ranking them on overall player strength. Like Bama is a 95 right I believe.

Anyone calling for Mullen needs to go read the series of longforms detailing how his program imploded at Florida.
Culture Shock, Part I: inside the Florida Gators’ implosion under Dan Mullen
Basically, something happened to him in 2020 where he suddenly seemed to stopped giving a shite. He stopped recruiting altogether, started missing meetings, was uninvolved at practice, and really all he wanted to do was coach QBs.
I’m out on Mullen. Pittman purportedly (and by his own admission) was already talking about plans for retirement when our job came open. This is a game where you need young, hungry coaches, with prime examples being guys like Lanning, Smart, Riley, Heupel, Fleck, Jonathan Smith, Kalen DeBoer, etc.
College coaching ceased being an 8-5 job 20 years ago due to 24/7/365 recruiting, and now gasoline has been thrown on that fire with the portal, NIL, and constant media exposure. You can’t hire a guy whose fire in the belly is going to be questionable.
You guys think Sam is too deferential to his coordinators? Mullen was basically getting punked and overridden by his coaches in front of his own players.

DeBoer is definitely an interesting name. Won everywhere he's been and not even 50 yet. He's from South Dakota and who knows if he'd leave Washington for here though. They are moving into Big 10 country which might help him stay there. Makes less than Pittman currently.

I was calling for him to be our OC, but I see your point.
And after listening to him on multiple podcasts, I think he is done with college level. He didn’t say he wouldn’t coach pros though.
Said a mass exodus to NFL because of the recruiting schedule.

Sean Lewis is 37, OC for Colorado. Was head coach at Kent State before leaving to join Colorado.

Have uncle Jerry go lock up coach prime for a deal in the future either next year or the following and be done with it. We can then call it even for The Morris debacle.
If nothing else coach prime can take the Twitter heat ...
