I’ll give him a B+

He took a play out of the 49ers playbook LINK

A. Really good game where we scored 55 total, ran and threw the ball well, and scored when we needed to in order to get the win. I think the game would’ve never been in doubt if Sam hadn’t meddled and told him to run some clock.

I'm tired of going in a shell once we get the lead. I don't know who I'm mad at, but I'm mad and tired of doing that. These stupid fricking refs didn't help matters, but we should have never been close to going to OT with Kansas.

Not a far fetched assumption, but still an assumption

The not throwing it when they were loading the box is what made me drop him to a B

Under 3 minutes to go, up by 14, Kansas is out of timeouts, we’re on their 30 yard line and it’s 2nd and 11. We could just kneel the ball twice and kick a FG. At worst we miss the FG and they get ball back with 1:30 left down two TD’s. We make the FG game is over.

Maybe that’s too conservative. So let’s hand the ball off. That’s fine. But don’t hand it to a lanky 6’5” WR who’s carried the ball ONE TIME this whole year. Give it to the RB’s who work every single day on ball security.

Besides that bad decision, I rate Briles play calling an A.

I'm almost to the point of saying Briles isn't the problem. I think our QB makes dumb mistakes a LOT and our HC can't help but keep the leash tight on the play calling at times

It has to be Sam. I haven't seen an offense be so explosive in the first half and be so tamed in the second half.

It has to be, you can’t score 24 points in the first qtr then just forget to score for multiple 10m+ periods.. then score 3 times in overtime when you need to, and it be your OC. There has to be a little something in there.

Agreed.

I’ve shite on Briles quite a bit throughout the season because of our 20/20 offense, deservedly so. I thought he called a decent game, but the Landers play call was maddening.

Great 1st half. Total dog shite in the 2nd half with a F- for the trick play call when trying to run out the clock. That dumb shite about cost us another game.

Called a good OT.

The main problem with Briles is that he can call 98% great game but when it matters he likes to get cute and you can’t do that in the SEC. He does this cute bullshite that backfires nearly 100% if the time. Why in the hell would you call a reverse at that point in the game? Run the fricking ball down their throat and run out the clock.

I’m just tired of the tacky shite by him.

THIS< THIS< THIS< all of fricking this. I was 40yd line, row 5. I saw Sam not once, not twice, but three times tell Brile definitively to slow it down and run the ball. As soon as he did, we were trying to bleed clock with our D.. they stuff the run over and over. Briles is a much better OC than our fans seem to phathom overall. It is a Sam problem period.

I have heard Sam say. "We can't do that in the SEC, we need to run the ball" BS. We need to use the pass to open the run with our Oline, and defenses selling out to stop the pass. We were close enough to see the calls, the coaching, the lips moving. It is on SAM!

BTW, spoke to Mrs. Briles for about 30 minutes on Tuesday night. Very sweet lady, They absolutely love it at Arkansas in every way possible. The University, the local schools, the lifestyle, etc. Briles would love to be the HD once Sam retires. Personally, I think he would kill it here. FWIW...

back to Sam... He is too cautious when up a few scores....

As someone who's shite on Briles quite a bit this season, I've started coming to that realization more and more, especially when we're sitting on a lead.

I do think he wants to be an old ground-and-pound offense, and he seems to live by an outdated set of rules wherein if you're down a certain number of points the game is over. That type of mentality is profoundly antiquated in the modern game where teams can score and score fast.

I will give Briles (and Pittman) a ton of credit for winning a game like this after dealing with a ton of transfers and opt-outs. We were relying on guys like Ty Washington, Jaeden Wilson, Sategna, and Harper Cole in our WR/TE corps, with all having crucial catches at one point or another.

Some version of this is probably our best bet. I’m tired of the massive regime changes. Maybe 2 more years (assuming we hover in the 6-8 win range) and then agree to have Sam step aside. Obviously a 3 or 4 win season next year would lead to another big reset.

All I will say negative, is sometimes when people are wide open on under throws, he throws short and down… is that a feature or a bug? Idk. But so many of those throws are at peoples feet. It happens so often that maybe they coach it that way.
