Do we know exactly what went down in the previous Leach negotiations?

Going back to 2017 and the post Bert shite show or does it even go back to 2012 after Smiley was canned? I'm not sure how long the talks between the parties have gone on, but it's obvious Leach wanted this job for a long, long time and it never materialized.
I know there were talks of us shunning him in 2017, but does anyone know what actually happened in the last 2 rounds of searches.
I remember Hunter's plane going to Idaho, just near Pullman where I would guess an interview took place, but outside of that it seems like a bunch or rumors. I think Bob Holt even asked Leach about the job today and he wouldn't divulge any info.

The rumor of the day is that he expressed interest again this year but we thought we had a Kiffin so we said no thanks. After Kiffin bailed, we said so about that offer... and he said frick you. Hence the conversation around him planning to break the score board against us and Yurachek.

Any truth that we tried to low ball him as well? I've read a few posts that indicate we wanted to pay him like $2.5 mil/year or something. And that didn't help matters either.
I'm all for Pittman, bur if Leach wins 9-10 games at Moo State I may Theo myself out of my office window.

Don't worry, that isn't happening. He aint beating Bama and he will slip up at least one or two other games

He isn't going to beat the teams with deep defenses and a decent D cord. People are taking too much from the LSU win. I strongly suspect that Pelini is the new chief. He played man against them all game and refused to adjust when they got burned repeatedly.
That said this will be his most talented team at State and he will probably try to destroy us for not giving him a real shot at our HC spot.

No way we offered him less money than he was already making. That's just some retard shite there. We probably weren't willing to give him the salary and buyout he wanted and he went to someone who was.

Guess we’ll never know the truth, but man his offense would have been exciting on the Hill.

I think the thought that we already had Kiffin is the most likely but damn leach would’ve been better hirer than Kiffin anyway you would think their records proved that. Kiffin wasn’t able to win like leach has at usc and Tennessee and yet we wanted him over leach? Just stupid man

College sports is a recruiting game now. Kirby is not a good coach but is elite at recruiting. Kiffin is the same way but can also run an elite offense. I like both coaches a lot and it is cool to see then at rival schools. Hopefully they start making fun of each other. I know they have an off the field friendship

I'll take Mike Gundy over leach. What he has done at Oklahoma State is terrific.
131-64 overall. Won the Big 12 in 2011. 9-5 bowl record. Six 10 win seasons.
Kiffin got fired twice and would have been fired at Tennessee had he stayed. No one gets so much praise for doing so little as much as him.

Idk if gundy would’ve took the job we know leach would have. Also putting our eggs all in a basket with a guy who’s notorious for leaving as soon as he’s presented with a better gig was a bad idea. Even if he came here he’d only be here until he was fired or had mild success and left for a better job. I believe leach would be much more likey to stay for the long term which if he turns it around I think Pittman will too. The fact that we could’ve had a sure fire solid coach and passed for the maybe Coach was a bad move on my part but I know I’m biased I love leachs office

I don't know, I take everything I read about coaching searches online with a grain of salt. It usually follows the same general pattern:
Week 1: Hot name Coach X has 'verbally agreed' to coach the team
Week 2: After nothing is announced, we hear things are on hold until some details are worked out
Week 3: Negotiations have fallen apart, but I hear we've moved on to Coach Y and he is expected to accept
Week 4: No announcement until after the bowl game, but Coach Y has agreed in principal to become the head coach
Week 5: Coach Z is announced as the new head coach
Then we spend the rest of the time hearing about how we were so close to signing Coach X but because Coach Y was cheaper, we went that route. However, negotiations fell through with Coach Y because he was angry about being second choice, so we ended up with Coach Z.
In all reality, we probably asked Coach X and Y and they just weren't interested...but that doesn't make nearly as exciting of a story.

Yuracheck probably did swing high but the bigger names just weren't interested.
Remember how poorly the search went in 2007? Then Petrino came out of the blue. That could have been a disaster.
I only wanted Kiffin because he was the only one we could get and that is pathetic. Leach was out because no one in the SEC wanted him except Mississippi State. So that leaves us to the bottom of the barrel.

The pirate is a loose cannon. You have to put yourself in the AD’s shoes. Would you hire someone that was great at their job but difficult to deal with or someone that is good at their job and a good subordinate?

2.5 million doesn't even sound realistic.
Not nearly as realistic as Leach going to a team more "win now" ready and using an undisclosed offer from Arky in negotiations with MSU.
I honestly would not have trusted Leach to take the heat here early on. MSU fans have more leniency to give.

My understanding is that Leech has expressed interest in the Arkansas job ever since he was at Kentucky. He always inquires about it, but we never returned interest, until our last search. This time they went to see him and Leech wanted too much money, so his name was scratched off the list.
Personally, I never thought he would do well in the SEC, but then SEC defenses aren't what they once were, so now I don't know. I didn't watch the MSU/LSU game, but the score was a big surprise, even though I didn't expect LSU to be great.

Apparently Leach routinely torched Pelini at Nebraska as well during the old Texas Tech days.
I was listening to an interview the other day and they said that Sue-led Nebraska team that won the Big 12 north got lit up by historical margins under Leach that year.
I'm wondering how much of that game was MSU and how much was Pelini's terribleness.
I also think we wanted Kiffin so bad because of his recruiting abilities. I was totally on the Lane Train, mainly because I didn't think Leach could maintain enough talent here to win consistently.

The definition of doing well differs by expectations. It takes more than having a high scoring offense to win in the SEC.

quote:where was this option? Look I like Pittman and am pulling for him 100% but if the options are someone who’s good at their job but says stupid shite in press conferences (which is the only thing leach has ever done) or a career assistant with 0 d1 coaching experience that answer seems pretty easy to me. The fact that leach has already proven he can be successful in this league after week 1 and some of you still can’t wrap your heads around the fact that ya passing on him was a colossal frick up by people who prioritize the way someone acts over success is a problem. Who gives a shite that he’s a weird dude? I mean what’s the difference Joey freshwater who is just as silly loves being a troll and maybe worse because he might try to start fricking coeds but didn’t want Leach because he’s a weird old frick with funny sound bytes? I mean look at all the publicity he and state have gotten this past week does that seem negative to you? Some of you in this thread need to just eat your crow with leach. We could’ve had him and we fricked it up. It happens we’re gonna move on and hopefully beat his pass happy arse tonight
someone that is good at their job and a good subordinate?
