You gotta be a progressive democrat. The suggestions of how to spend other folks' money just slides effortlessly off your tongue.

Fingers crossed. Sounds like a great duo from the articles folks are sharing. Basically in the vein we were all hoping for, I think.

I read Football Scoop too and they are bad to jump the gun, so I am keeping my fingers crossed but not convinced until I see it from a more credible source.

Thoughts from someone close to Ballou:
quote:
My take...of course I am disappointed in this. But I am incredibly proud of my friend. To go from a HS coach to the pinnacle of the profession in a few years is nothing short of remarkable. He also has left IU in far better shape than he found it, which frankly was a joke (I can say that now because there are no repercussions). He has laid down the path and the framework for whoever follows, and as I just said made it a very attractive job. IU will still be on the right path.
This is not known, but Ballou and Rhea were bombarded with official and unofficial requests to leave "lowly IU" and go to greener pastures continually. The CFB industry couldn't understand how they stayed. Everyone in the industry knew who they were. From 3 NFL teams last year, to any "blue blood" that had an opening, potential opening, or a HC looking to improve. They stayed every time.
So what is the difference now? It's not just that it is Bama. Of course that is a huge draw...but their new Sport Science center is the diamond nobody else can match. Ballou and Rhea will literally be able to write the book on the next steps in the industry, and pave the way for the next generation of sport performance. THAT is a once in a lifetime deal.
My hope was that IU, Ballou, and Rhea would be like Chris Doyle at Iowa from 20 years ago. Everyone and anyone came after Doyle but he stayed put. However, and of course this is just speculation, if Chris Doyle was in the same place and this opportunity came up, then I think he would have done the same thing.

Billionaires do this plenty
"Build me a new stadium or I'm moving the team"
"Build this new factory but I'm still going to continue to underpay workers"
"Pay for this war with your money and the blood of your sons and brothers while I sit back and profit"

So these 2 have been widely considered the best in the industry.
They've had overtures from several blue-blood CFB programs and no less than 5 NFL teams the last 2 years.
His being an IU alum and promises of facility improvements held all of them off.
IU fans pretty much believe they were the key to their success and knew they were going to eventually lose them. It's going to set them "back five years" and devastate recruiting and their "one advantage" in the BIG Ten.
The new nutrition/dining facility added to the football complex last year and the new Sports Science Complex under construction now also at the football complex seem to be the difference in all the high-profile overtures that put Bama over the top.
The fact that the ball started rolling on the Sports Science Complex last year makes me think Saban knew Cochran was going to leave and he knew he wanted to target Ballou and Rhea last year and Bama needed something to differentiate itself over all the other CFB and NFL offers they received.

BOL Nuggets on David Ballou
quote:
- Have been told by someone close to Ballou that he turned down three NFL jobs last year and two this year. Very much in demand.
- Same source said it would take the perfect place and situation for him to leave. He’s an IU guy for a long time so Alabama is fortunate to land him. The ability to work with UA-type recruits was the biggest selling point.
- Also was told that UA is already in motion to upgrade the weight room for what Ballou/Rhea need for their system.
- As we told you when Cochran left, Saban saw this as a chance to change some things and upgrade to a newer, more up-to-date system. He was all in and did his due diligence here and wasn’t in a rush until he found his guy.
- Multiple sources have told us that Ballou has informed people close to him and the IU program that he is leaving.
- Spoke to a Big Ten coach who is familiar with the duo this morning: “Every kid at Bama will get stronger, faster and more flexible. That is a fact and it won’t take long for it to show.”

This is what excites me the most.
It's not a knock on Cochran because he's out the door, it's just how coaches/teachers are. They believe in their way because that's what they been taught and taught by them.
Whether it was Feld, Dawson, or obviously Ballou, it's a chance for new or fresh ideas to be added to "The Process".

Seems like Ballou and Dr. Rhea are a more cerebral and science approach to S&C than what's in place.
I'll tell you who's probably celebrating with confetti and balloons...Jeff Allen.
Jeff Allen has always seemed more technology-driven and science and numbers based that didn't seem to match Cochran.
I just think Cochran's was the best in the nation when he came in 2007.
Problem is, he was running the "best S&C program" from 2007 in 2019. It was outdated.
It worked for the Mt. Cody's of 2009. It just doesn't match the type of athlete Alabama has now, which is vastly different from 2007.

I agree. Sometimes, the old way ain't the best way. As the science improves and changes, new methods can be the better approach.
