I’ll be happy when/if Chris Stewart takes over.

He's been broadcasting for 48 years. He's been at Bama for 32, while simultaneously doing NASCAR and many seasons of professional hockey, minor league baseball, arena football, and the NFL. Plus hosting his own sports talk radio show for 20 years.

The guy is probably tired. It happens to everybody. He'll be 67 in a few weeks. He might just be ready to retire to his NC beach house.

Truth be told told, Eli hasn’t been good for years.

Truth.

If you can find an audio of the broadcast of the 1992 Sugar Bowl vs. Miami and George Teague's strip of Lamar Thomas, Eli called it as a fumble, doing a complete injustice to the magnitude of Teague's play.

I think it was after the 2018 NC game, I saw a rebroadcast of the game with segments of Eli sitting there in the booth doing the play by play while looking through binoculars. I don't know how you can do that and see the whole field and effective call the play by play.

This is where I stand. I don’t dislike him or anything like that, but he’s never been that great. A lot of fans love him just because he’s been around forever. Yet, he really doesn’t have those “homer” qualities that you’d see from other longtime play-by-play guys at other schools. He doesn’t need to be Jim Fyffe but Eli just has no enthusiasm.

Hopefully he will retire whenever his contract is up and Chris Stewart will finally get that role.

Y’all should hear him call baseball games.

It’s ear murder.

Kinda weird but it seems like I enjoy Eli for the same reasons a lot of y'all don't like him. I don't see it as a lack of enthusiasm but more trying not to be too biased. On the unfortunate occasions I've had to listen to an opposing teams radio broadcast because it was all that was available I've always hated how big of homers they are. For example those two UGA radio idiots making fun of Tua's name when he took that sack in OT in the Natty. Or the absolute whining some of these guys do on behalf of their teams.

Meanwhile, Auburn fans can't be liking the guy who replaced Bramblett. This guy sounds like he's been hanging out with Stan White way too much whining after every bad play.

If you've ever listened to Eli and couldn't tell what was going on in the game, you just simply have problems comprehending spoken language. Full stop. Stop blaming Eli for your disabilities and pull the hood off your ears.

I've never understood the hate for Eli Gold. I take that back. I do understand it because it's Alabama and he's Jewish. I just don't understand how it's still a thing in 2020.

Holy cow. You're blaming ANTI-SEMITISM for Eli's issues? Are you serious?

He's been fantastic at times. He's also demonstrably bad at play-by-play announcing at times.

On another board several years ago, I took a few lighthearted jabs at the broadcast team of Eli and Snake. Snake, sadly, is no longer with us, but the gist of what I posted then still holds true today: Eli is terrible at telling listeners what's actually happening. He's great at color, and giving you a feel for the atmosphere ... but he's not good at giving you down-and-distance, telling you what just happened during a play, or any of the main points you want a play-by-play announcer to convey.

I'm sure he's excellent if you're watching the game either in person or on TV, but if you depend on Eli to actually give you an accurate depiction of the action, you're up a creek.

Lame.

I had no idea he was Jewish. It’s not something that I think about when listening to a football game.

I’m 39 years old and Eli is the only voice that I can remember calling games on the radio for us. He’s the only voice of Alabama football on the radio to me. For that, I love the guy. It’s ok to recognize that he’s slipping though. It happens to our favorites all the time in sports.

I like Eli, but this is a typical drive:

"First and ten... handoff to Harris.

He's got a hole! Bowls over some defenders and gets aaaaallllll the way down to the 22 yard line!

Second and 8..."

It's Bama's announcer calling the games. Be grateful it's easy to tune in and listen to him on the radio when you're in the shop doing other shite. Use your fricking imagination to know what's happening; every little goddamn detail shouldn't have to be explained to you. You motherfrickers that complain about this shite must not have frickall else to do with your lives. I would beat someones arse to listen to John Forney or Keith Jackson call a game and that's how you'll feel about Eli Gold when he's gone but you're too fricking self-absorbed to realize it now...but you will later.

He’s more interested in legacy sound bites than anything else.

He hasn’t been the same since that online puss trolling stuff came out.

Easy big fella.

Just because someone doesn't like Eli's calls doesn't make them an anti-Semite.

I don't want every little detail. I don't want to hear 14 different adjectives describing how Mac threw a ball, or how Najee ran the ball.

What I DO want is to know what happened during the play, and what the result of the play is. Eli is not very good at that. Again, if you're watching the game, it's fine; but if you're depending on him to describe the action in a way that lets you know what's happening, you're likely to be frustrated.

I have heard Eli make calls which INDICATE something has happened, but he doesn't TELL me what happened. For example:

"Handoff to Harris, bounces it outside, he's in a footrace, to the 20, to the 10, to the five, dragging defenders ... What a run by Najee Harris!" And it's not until we hear him say "First and goal at the three" or "Reichard lining up for the extra point" that we know if Najee actually scored.

Or:

"First and 10 at the 25, handoff to Robinson, HUGE HOLE! He LUNGES forward before being brought down by a host of defenders. Hard run by Brian Robinson.

"Second down, and Mac swings a pass out to the flat ... he was looking for Waddle, but it's batted down by the defense.

"Third and nine, now, from the Bama 28 ..."

Do you see the issue?

Yes I do. You're used to seeing every detail on TV and he's not giving every detail fast enough. If we score, he says TOUCHDOWN ALABAMA so in your example, you know Najee was down at the 5 and he comes back to fine tune it. Brother, I can only tell you that what he announces tells me enough of the game and I can imagine/figure out the rest. My simple joy in life is on Sunday by pouring over the box score, play-by-play recap and statistics for the games to gleen all the stuff I didn't catch during the game. Don't be so anxious to know everything at once, because once you do, there won't be anything else to know or discover.
As an aside, the next time you go to a game, don't look screen for the down and distance, look at the down and yard markers to know where each team is on the field and how far they have to go for the next down. You'll never be caught looking away from the field when something cool happens.

You and I have verrrry different expectations for a play-by-play announcer. Eli works for you, and that's great. For me -- and for a significant subset of the Alabama fanbase -- he's frustratingly inconsistent with his announcing. He's the 2020 Alabama defense of announcers.

Is THAT what those guys are doing on the sidelines? I thought that was some sort of Stretch Armstrong contraption they were holding. Thank you for clearing that up.

While I've got you, though, can you explain to me what the "chain gang" is people keep talking about? I thought those were prisoners, but apparently it's some people at a football game.

I noticed the same with Eli Saturday night, just a total lack of enthusiasm and inability to communicate what happened in a timely manner.

On the Chris Stewart thing, though -- I really, really love Chris Stewart, but he's been through a lot.

I don't know if any of y'all have caught his high school games this year, but they have been... not good.

Granted they were only high school gigs that a few people were even interested in, but he's been getting words and game situations wrong, fumbling his lines, and just not doing well during the broadcasts.

Again, I love him, and pray that he fully recovers his health, but I don't know if he's quite all the way back yet, even though we hope he might one day be.

I listened to some of the broadcast when I was driving home from a friend's house at halftime. Gold and Wilson both were pretty crappy.
