ESPN had a highlight package after the game last night that I can't find anywhere now but they had Eli's calls of each touchdown and he was simply awful.

Full disclosure, I grew up recording Eli off the radio because I loved his game calls so much. I was heartbroken when I moved to Kentucky because I couldn't always get the Bama announcers on XM radio.

As the years have gone by I've listened less and less to him, usually only hearing the CBS highlight they usually do and I had noticed those weren't always great. I definitely remember his call of Smitty's catch in the championship game being the worst of all of them on that YouTube clip of the different calls, but I still didn't realize how bad it has gotten.

Last night, on Waddle's huge catch, it was just like he couldn't be bothered. His call of Julio's catch, "He's behind the defense!" will always be one of my favorites, but there wasn't a hint of that last night in one of the biggest moments in one of the biggest games in years.

I know he's never been some people's favorite but he was always mine and it sucks to hear how bad he's gotten.

I don't listen to Eli much anymore, but the few times I have lately he seems more concerned with saying something clever than letting me know Jaylen Waddle is running 90 yards for a touchdown

Yeah if you were listening to that on the radio you wouldn't have much of a clue of what's going on. Pretty poor call on that play

His enthusiasm seems to have dropped off, for sure.

Maybe part of the problem is he’s constantly having to get ready to read the next advertisement. Okay, that’s probably not part of the problem, but that is one of the most annoying things about the Alabama radio broadcast.

He didnt even use his patented Touchdown Alabama, during the Waddle play either. The team trainers should have checked his temperature.

I wonder if the change in regular sky box location has effected his commentary.

Truth be told told, Eli hasn’t been good for years. Zero enthusiasm. His call of 2nd & 26 was grounds for termination. He just rolled out a canned line.

I think it’s way past time for Chris Stewart to take over.

Eli is usually more interested in where he’s going to eat after the game than the actual game.

Yeah, that was embarrassingly bad. You could tell he had planned on that line if we won the game, but it would have only fit if we had ended it in victory formation. I don't think he has much enthusiasm for the job anymore since 90% of our games are blowouts.

Eli has always broadcasted the game like he was doing a TV game and we are all watching. His basketball was so full of delayed facts about what just happened they had to replace him. Even though he still does it in football, it probably doesn't impact the fans just the same. From time to time it can really get bad. He has never learned to just spit out the facts first and then do his commentary stuff. It's really amazing.

Still, why CBS chose that call to highlight the night was just wrong too.

I've never liked Eli and it angers me anytime I listen to a basketball game on the radio and think how great Chris Stewart would be calling a football game.

Eli has been awful for years now. It’s impossible to listen to. As others have said, he embarrassed himself on his 2nd and 26 call and Chris Stewart should’ve taken over the next day (he should’ve taken over years ago anyway).

Yeah, he even admitted that it was a canned line and that when he makes calls like that, he does it thinking they will one day be played at the Bryant Museum.

Just a terrible way to broadcast a game. Time for some new blood.

Yeah that bothered me for awhile. His emotion right at the beginning was real, then went to the canned crap. Keep it emotional and raw.

i'm old enough that John Forney was my bama radio hero. that beautiful southern accent calling a team he loved, nothing better. so you can guess, ive just tolerated eli. not saying eli isnt a good guy, just never liked his voice for bama football.

unpopular opinion - Gold was never that good, but we liked him b/c he was "ours". They've always forced a partner in the booth that didn't really fit, either.

I'd love for them to just move on to Stewart. He's clearly better and more passionate about Bama, in my opinion.

I like his tenor, but not so much of his rehearsed quips.

Couldn’t agree more... when i came to Bama in the late 2000s, there were still times when he made some great calls. But it’s definitely dropped off a cliff in recent years.

I’ve never liked his level of enthusiasm. The single most consequential play in CFB history and he calls it like a September touchdown against Arkansas State

Chris Stewart would have blown out his own eardrum screaming
