On the whole, I'm very excited! Just need to find improved rebounding among returning guys and newcomers

I agree, all 4 of the teams that made the Final 4 this year were top 10 in both offense and defense. All were known for being strong, tough defensive teams with good to elite rebounding.

Last year the refs called the NCAAT a decent amount tighter, so much so that Nate actually said in his press conference before the tourney that he expected a tighter whistle than in the SEC and some SEC teams would have to adjust defensively more than we would. Yesterday, they absolutely had the same whistle as SEC and let a huge amount of contact go for most of both those games. I worry we still may not be getting physical enough or strong enough defensively with this roster, especially if we lose Reid and/or Philon.

Our 2023 roster was generally punishing on defense, rebounds, etc, and if it wasn’t for a 3-30 shooting night would have probably been playing in the championship game. It helps to have a Brandon Miller offensively, but that team was long, decently strong (not SDSU strong), and great defensively and on the boards.

Miami went 7-24 last year? Jeez. I didn’t realize how quickly they fell off.

I’m excited about this kid. Nate has shown he can develop guards.

Coach retired in December. They obviously didn’t get off to a good start, but I can imagine coach ducking out mid season would put a damper on the rest of the schedule.

Yeah, that situation was kind a wild.

I know he probably came in wanting to play for Coach Larrañaga!

Hopefully, he can get back on track here. He's ranked extremely high coming out of high school and it looks like he has a lot of tools Coach Oats can work with.

OM makes sense. I wasn’t thrilled with the notion of him to Bama.

He’s gonna be a nightmare in that Beard system even if he only puts up 6-8ppg.

That was one of the best rebounding performances I’ve ever seen against us but I agree completely that he doesn’t fit what Oats is trying to do at all.

I like our talent on the team so far. A Lot more shooting.Need another Guard and a guy who fits the Herb/Gary/MoD archetype and can eat up rebounds

Joka…a lot of similarities between Bethea and Holloway/Quinerly.

Those 2 worked out.

Bethea got 4 inches of height on those two guys though. With better coaching, he ought to be able to use his length to an advantage on dribble drives. Holloway and Quinerly both have/had trouble finishing at the rim when there is a lot of length around the basket. I remember some games where Q would spend most of the day having layup getting volleyball spiked by help defenders.

If Philon leaves and we can't pull another point guard, who do yall think we run with at PG?

The guards, which I believe we will add another. “Point guard” is antiquated. It’s positionless basketball where any good ball handler who can beat their man off the dribble can bring it up.

We want to get up the court, so getting in a set play in the half court with a point just isn’t all that important. Like even Philon isn’t a great passer currently. He’s great a getting to the basket and making tough layups.

With the line up where it is right now, who/where do we turn to get a bucket when it gets late in the shot clock/end of half? I mean, its not like we've been good at this in the past two seasons, but where do yall see us going?

To say Philon isn’t a great passer is absurd. He was the one throwing 90% of those lobs to big Cliff. Against Auburn he had a play that looked like a young magic Johnson. He was on a 2 on one fastbreak and he split the defender and kicked out to a wide open Youngblood for three. Dick Vitale was screaming for him to take the layup. He has the best court vision from our point guards since Kira and Sexton.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean.

I think Coach Oats will be able to tap into all that potential Jail has!

A lob isn’t that hard to throw. Lol. I watched him all year. One instance of someone kicking out to an open three doesn’t make you correct. I’ve seen him miss open teammates a lot while penetrating. He can and will get better at it.

Statistically, his assist to turnover ration is just about the same as Sears who everyone complained was a turnover machine who didn’t pass the ball enough. So your lobs and the one play where he looked like Magic aren’t being supported by stats.

Yeah, Philon's decision-making was suspect at times. He's the main reason we lost the TN game. Now, it's Oats' fault LP was put in a position where he could fail, but Philon didn't pass to Sears, then immediately got the ball stripped and had to tie up to save it, and then didn't get the ball in on the 5 second call.

He's a great player who has a high ceiling, but he has issues. He turned the ball.over for too often. Sears would drive in the lane without a plan and would travel or get blocked. Philon kept driving into the lane and getting stripped, or would make the wrong pass.
