Interesting that they are embracing the autism side of things now. I know the lady in Tusc that diagnosed him as having it when he was younger at the facility he went to daily. The Pettway's berated her, called her names and told her she didn't know what she was talking about.
Turned my opinion of him somewhat. She's a sweet lady and knows her business. She was very hurt by the comments.

Since January 1st away from home we're 226th in the country defensively.
That's very specific, and still very different from one of the worst in the entire country.
We're 94th in the country on defense over the course of the entire year (the same range they are referring to in that article) according to KenPom. That's bad but very different from 318th in the country.

I was listening to the Aaron Torres pod a bit last night and he made a good point about Alabama's match-up. Notre Dame/Rutgers is the late game tomorrow night and the winner's next game is early afternoon on Friday. That is a very quick turnaround time considering they're having to go from Dayton to San Diego right after the game.
If Alabama can push the pace of play to their standards, they should win this one facing some potentially tired legs. I don't really get why so many people are picking Rutgers, they're basically just a poorer version of us. They only have 1 maybe 2 quality wins on the road and have been sporadic throughout the season. Looking at their offense, our defense may actually be ok in this one as well.

Notre Dame also only plays 7 guys
Goodwin - 85% minutes
Hubb - 83%
Wesley - 72%
Ryan - 72%
Atkinson - 68%
Laszewski - 68%
Wertz - 46%
Everyone else under 2% (don't play at all)

I see we have returned to the bargaining stage and are once again convincing ourselves that good things are going to happen.

I'm hoping these guys remember Herb Jones' words from last year...

It's the last 12 weeks, including the entirety of conference play. And we have a pretty clear difference (like a lot of teams do) in efficiency on defense at home vs away from home. And, probably my fault for not explaining, but I generally don't include the bottom 100 teams from the MEAC/SWAC/NEC/etc when I say "in the country". The bottom 100 of almost any stat that is opponent adjusted is all the teams from the 6-7 worst conferences.
Away from home since January 1st (10 games)
> #84 out of 87 in high majors defensive efficiency (the 3 teams behind us - Georgetown, Oregon State, Georgia - are a combined 0-31 away from home over that stretch) (#227 overall)
> #86 out of 87 in high majors free throw rate defense (#355 overall)
> #75 out of 87 in high majors in defensive rebound rate (#323 overall)
We've been very bad defensively outside of Coleman this year. Historically bad.
The silver lining, though, is that in terms of actually giving up made baskets (2P%, 3P%, eFG%) we are very middle of the pack.
> #59 out of 87 in high majors in eFG% defense (#218 overall)
> #51 out of 87 in high majors in 2PT FG% defense (#193 overall)
> #58 out of 87 in high majors in 3PT FG% defense (#233 overall)
So, we go from average/below average to terrible for 2 reasons
(1) We foul teams a ton and send them to the FT line
(2) We give up a bunch of offensive rebounds and give teams 2nd chances
Good news
Notre Dame
> #80 out of 87 in high majors in offensive free throw rate (#329 overall)
> #86 out of 87 in high majors in offensive rebounding rate (#352 overall)
Rutgers
> #65 out of 87 in high majors in offensive free throw rate (#285 overall)
> #57 out of 87 in high majors in offensive rebounding rate (#184 overall)
Texas Tech
> #49 out of 87 in high majors in offensive free throw rate (#329 overall)
> #61 out of 87 in high majors in offensive rebounding rate (#201 overall)
Notre Dame is as perfect a matchup for our defense as we could hope for. Rutgers and Texas Tech are better than most.
Teams that would have been nightmares for us based on the factors that have been issues for us in the past
- Providence
- Wisconsin
- Villanova
- Purdue
The teams that rank in the Top 150 nationally in both FT rate and OR % that we played this year (high majors)
- Mississippi State (#33 FTR, #74 OR) (1-1)
- Texas A&M (#60 FTR, #59 OR) (0-1)
- LSU (#70 FTR, #57 OR) (1-1)
- Arkansas (#79 FTR, #53 OR) (1-0)
- Memphis (#110 FTR, #36 OR) (0-1)
4-4 in those games and all 4 wins were games we had to hang on in the last minute (and all 4 were at home).
Vandy and Georgia rank in the top 20 in free throw rate, but very low in OR%.

I've baked our automatics into my thoughts
- we will try and turn it over
- we will foul if teams try and go past us
- we will give up offensive rebounds if the other team crashes the boards
The best news ever is Notre Dame is probably the worst combination of those 3 things out of all the high-major schools in the country. They don't turn anyone over, don't try and attack the rim and don't attempt to offensive rebound. Our 3 biggest WTF things and they are the worst team in the country in combination at them.
In conclusion, they'll just shoot 57% from 3PT and beat us 97-92.

quote:I’m with you. There’s really no benefit to critique and be negative now. We lose we go home, simple as that. If we can get hot and build up some confidence, we can make a run and if not, we’re probably another 6 vs. 11 upset. We know who we are as a team or at least, know who are two teams and not sure which one will show up. So, let’s just enjoy the ride and see how this team responds to our backs being against the wall.

Agree - we're in the NCAA Tournament as a single digit seed. This is the sort of stuff we all begged and made burnt offerings for over the last 15 years.
Weird things happen in the tournament. Teams figure things out and get hot. And if we don't, oh well. But we're there, and that's very fun. No point in being frustrated at the flaws (until they manifest themselves in the first game, obviously, then I'll be very frustrated with them

NO doubt. Just remember the Grant years and enjoy this year. Hopefully Nate can upgrade the roster for the coming year.

Let's just contextualize this for the thread's sake
We are in the NCAA Tournament for the 2nd straight year. We went to the Sweet 16 last year and, if seeding goes chalk, we will go to the Round of 32 this year. Here are all our years since Gottfried's last NCAA Tournament in 2006 when we lost to UCLA in the 2nd round (ironically, in San Diego).
2022 : #6 seed, TBD (Oats)
2021 : #2 seed, Sweet 16 (Oats)
2020 : No NCAAT (COVID) (Oats)
2019 : No NCAAT (NIT) (Avery)
2018 : #9 seed, 2nd round (Avery)
2017 : No NCAAT (NIT) (Avery)
2016 : No NCAAT (NIT) (Avery)
2015 : No NCAAT (NIT) (Grant)
2014 : No NCAAT (Grant)
2013 : No NCAAT (NIT) (Grant)
2012 : #9 seed, 1st round (Grant)
2011 : No NCAAT (NIT) (Grant)
2010 : No NCAAT (Grant)
2009 : No NCAAT (CMG)
2008 : No NCAAT (CMG)
2007 : No NCAAT (NIT) (CMG)
Before last year we'd been to the NCAA Tournament 2 times between when I was a junior in college and the birth of my 3rd child. We've been there 2 times in the last 2 years, now.

But only after we were up 73-57 with 15 minutes to go in the game.
I do feel OK about either ND or Rutgers. Neither of them is the nightmare scenario of an underrated mid-major who forces a half court tempo with a quick as frick PG we can't stay in front of.

Can't shoot FTs poorly if you don't shoot them at all. Duke's opponents are going to get fricked harder than usual in the tournament this year with it being Coach K's swan song.
