A few lines later, there’s a resolution to approve the project scope and budget for the “Athletics Competition Arena.” That would indicate the momentum toward building a new facility over renovating Coleman Coliseum was moving toward reality.

I’m not being an arse, but I’m 46 and I don’t believe that I’ll ever see a new arena. When they announced that they were going to totally remodel Coleman, I never believed it. I’m just bitter right now

I like Ole Miss. Take the top 10 rows of the lower level and make it box seats for the FOGs. Tint the windows so that cameras can't see in. Have the students at court side opposite the camera. Make that bad boy 12.5k.

'Athletics Competition Arena' to be discussed at Alabama system board of trustees meeting

When the University of Alabama system board of trustees meets Thursday and Friday, it will discuss an item of interest to Alabama basketball and gymnastics fans.

According to the meeting agenda, the physical properties committee will present an item on "the Athletics Competition Arena." Then it will be formally voted on by the full board Friday.

Here's the official wording of the item on the agenda:

"Consideration of Resolution approving the preliminary project scope and budget and amendment of the Campus Master Plan for the Athletics Competition Arena at UA (Stage I)."

This could signify further steps in building a new facility for Alabama basketball and gymnastics, which has been a frequent topic of discussion.

In an interview with The Tuscaloosa News last week, Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne said all options are still on the board, whether it be renovations to Coleman Coliseum or a new building. Byrne said he knows people want to see a shovel in the ground, and he and coaches Nate Oats (men's basketball), Kristy Curry (women's basketball) and Dana Duckworth (gymnastics) are included in that.

"At the same time, too, we have processes that we have to go through as a university through our board of trustees that we are very respectful of," Byrne said. "And so, some of those conversations will be public. Some of those will not be public. Phase 2 for the Crimson Standard, which we are in now, is to address men’s and women’s basketball and gymnastics and men’s and women’s golf. Those fundraising conversations are ongoing. We have been pleased with the interest and willingness to support from our donors. So we’re trying to make all of that happen right now."

The Crimson Standard, a capital initiative for Alabama athletics, originally called for "extensive renovation and modernization" for Coleman Coliseum. The arena opened in 1968.

Absolutely not.

When I become old and rich and I'm slinging cash around the program, I want people to see which escort I bring to each game.

Do we have any idea on the timeline at all yet? I'm assuming something like 2025-2027 is the most realistic.
I mean if we have the money for it and a plan is in place idk why we can’t have it ready by the 2023-24 season, or at least by conference play that year. If we start building it this year maybe we can get it done by then.

Also, HOJO was talking on twitter spaces tonight and mentioned that it’s probably gonna be 2026 when we’d start building the arena but he didn’t want to put a date on it yet. Was hoping it’d be at least a year earlier but I can’t complain too much.

Edit: He may have meant 2026 was when it would be finished. I’m not sure. He wouldn’t say much from what I was told.

He said it’ll be 4 years from now before we even start building?

Damn. We may be two coaches down the road before we start building

Guess it is better than not doing anything though

I sure as hell can. That's ridiculous. It's embarrassing that we'll have to wait that long before anything even gets started. And that's if it doesn't get pushed back further, which is extremely likely. I'd imagine the betting odds on Oats being at a new school by the time it's done is very high.

Yeah, if the expectation is to break ground 4 years after approving the project that would suggest the money hasn't even been fully secured. It doesn't take 4 years to pick a design and go through the bid process for contractors.

Hope that's not really the case, but that's also why I asked if 2025-2027 was realistic. The plan is supposed to be presented on Thursday with a vote on Friday so hopefully something gets leaked over the weekend.

Also seems like there is a decent chance that Shaedon Sharpe makes his collegiate debut on Saturday against us.

I'm not sure he's right about that. I know he has more ins than the rest of us, but the people I have learned all the basketball news from the last few years said that groundbreaking would literally be this summer or fall at the latest. Definitely not 4 years away. That doesn't even make sense, to be frank. Bryne has been working on securing funding for the last 6-12 months because the last thing he wanted was to say "we're building an arena" and then not do anything. They're approving budgets and have preliminary plans already drawn up. That isn't even feasible if you aren't planning to even start building for half a decade. It's worthless given the way costing works. I'm assuming he meant we wouldn't start PLAYING there for 4 years. Which still seems like a stretch, but makes much more sense.

Paraphrasing the information from January 1 (information literally taken from discussions in Dallas with BOT members and Byrne)

- plans to be presented to trustees February meeting (check)
- best case scenario - shovel in ground in June 2022
- weather permitting, completed in January 2024, but possibly Fall 2024

This was on the heels of info from mid-November
- estimated completion date January 2025, similar to Ole Miss
- in process of raising $60M up front, shouldn't be an issue, just raised $40M for 9 hole golf course/practice facility

So, long story short, I'd be absolutely floored if they were doing all this work/letting it go public only to not do anything for 4-5 years.

That is pretty nuts, but their average attendance numbers are pretty low (and keep in mind, these are for really good teams)

2020 - 8,178
2019 - 6,218
2018 - 6,331
2017 - 6,811

I mean Georgia averages 8,000 a game and they've been average to awful for years and nobody there cares.

I love our arena and it can still get as loud as anywhere with the right setting but give me an arena that seats 12-15k with student section spanning one side of the court over 19k with students in a corner.

Thanks for that post - had forgotten some of the details. Do we know for certain if they will raze Coleman and build there or is another option on campus still on the table?
