Louisville basketball: Top coaching candidates to replace Chris Mack
quote:
4) Nate Oats, Alabama head coach
Oats has only been at Alabama for three years and turned down any interest from other jobs, namely Indiana, in order to stay with the Crimson Tide.
But Louisville doesn’t have the “extracurricular” issues that come with the Indiana job while also being in the same prestige category. Oats has nearly all the prerequisites, too, having had immediate success everywhere he has been. More importantly, he has proven he can recruit at an elite level and do so at the national level, so it’s not crazy to think he might be able to do even more with Louisville’s resources.
That said, Oats’ stock has cooled a bit given Alabama’s struggles over the last month or so. How committed is he to being at Alabama long term? We may find out if Louisville passes on some names higher up this list.
quote:
1) Bruce Pearl, Auburn head coach
On the surface, it seems silly to think Pearl might leave an Auburn program that he just led to the No. 1 national ranking. The 61-year-old has a great thing going on The Plains and no one would blame him for staying.
That said, he has proven to be an elite college coach at multiple locations and no longer has a cloud of NCAA suspicion over his head. That’s going to make him this offseason’s most desirable candidate because, as good as Auburn has become under his leadership, basketball will always be second-fiddle to football.
This might be Pearl’s last chance at one of the sport’s top-tier jobs, like Louisville. The Cardinals have as many resources as anyone and appear willing to put everything behind Pearl. He is the guy they’ve targeted, and there is some mutual interest from Pearl for those reasons.
We’ll see if this comes to fruition — Auburn paying up might change some things — but Louisville should make a hard run after Pearl.

Source tells me, if Chris Mack is gone as Louisville's coach, here's some names of interest:
Kenny Payne
Bruce Pearl
Will Wade
Nate Oats
Not saying there's interest from Louisville, but I'm told Pearl "wants it badly."
Payne also strong interest.

I'd be surprised if Pearl left Auburn. They will give him anything he wants at this point (and they should).

This group has A LOT of similarities to our Elite 8 team
I don’t see any outside of the 2 guard. Earnest Shelton and Jaden Shackelford are comparable.
That team had a savvy point guard, an elite shooter (Emmett Thomas shot nearly 45% from 3). A skilled wing with a ton of offensive instinct, and an elite offensive forward in Chuck Davis. Miles is a poor man’s Winston but Kennedy had an array of fundamental basketball moves. We don’t have anyone in the stratosphere of Chuck Davis in the post. There’s a reason he played professional basketball for a decade.

Gurley is Chuck Davis.
Bediako is Jamareo, extremely talented but young.

I’d take Shelton every day of the week

lets see hands of those who think Oats can turn it around.

I’m still pretty confident we make the NCAAt. May not win a game but we will be there. I am 100% confident Oats will fix the roster and we will be back near the top of the conference next year

Do I think this team turns it around to the point we play consistently each night, hell no. I fully expect us to win one of these next 3 and then lay another egg @ Vandy or vs USC.
We will be an 8/9 seed that doesn't make it out of the first weekend. Making the tournament is always good but it a tremendous letdown from how we all felt in December.

I think Oats can make us a perennial powerhouse. I have no hope that he can turn this group around. Round of 32 seems like the absolute ceiling at this point. I think we manage to sneak into the tournament based on quality wins and SOS, but gun to my head today I’d say it’s as a 9 or 10 seed- then we may get hot and win the opener against a similarly skilled team and then get thumped in round two by a real basketball team

Pearl has that recruiting pipeline through Atlanta, which supplied him well at Tennessee and Auburn. Does that pipeline stretch to Louisville? Does he know the street agents Louisville uses as well as his in Atlanta? Pearl is totally out from under the NCAA burden. anything and everything is legal now, so he will not get in trouble either place - or if he does, the NCAA would take another four years to do anything. Question is, will the NCAA hit Louisville with more sanctions? The ACC is weak now losing Roy Williams at UNC and Coach K at Duke. Pearl could dominate in the ACC better than in the SEC. All depends on how hard he wants to work to bring it back at Louisville. My guess is he rides out his career at Auburn.

Yeah All the FOGs questioning Oats are dumbasses. He hasn’t done a flawless job this year but he is 100% the right coach. I would give him even more money and BUILD HIM AN ARENA..just to show he is our guy and we are 100% behind him.

My gosh, can you imagine this thread during some of the Gottfried years? fricking pitchforks and knives out at all times.
In the end, I loved that 2004 team, and I don’t think this team is an elite 8 team. But there is some revisionist history about that group.
They lost 5 straight SEC games at one point. They lost 6 out of 7 during that run. That team just came together at the right time.

Our SOS that season is what saved us and is probably gonna be what saves us this season

Honestly I think Saban has ruined expectations for all other programs. Because our football team does it every single year people expect our basketball team to do it also. Don’t work like that.

If I remember correctly, Chuck Davis was just atrocious during the middle part of that season. A walking turnover. Then the lightbulb came on and he was a beast.
