Alabama MBB HC Nate Oats: 'I'm done talking after these losses' (USA Today)

quote:
After losing to Georgia last night, the last-place team in the SEC, head coach Nate Oats joined the Paul Finebaum Show to discuss the team’s recent performance.
He said that he entered the locker room and “[W]anted to hear what they had to say. I walked in and I said, ‘I’m done talking after these losses, I need to hear what you guys think the problem is.’ And they talked, and it was good. We got some stuff out.”

I love Oats but We have heard this line before from him

Yeah, I want to hear something like Keon gave JQ a black eye today in a practice fist fight. Just something to rile them all up and start playing like their hair is on fire.

You remember when Avery had Lawson Schaffer and Donta Hall fake a fight at practice?

He could but will he see the real problem soon enough? The biggest single factor contributing to this team's demise is that they are being overworked at practice and leg weary in the games, period. The first sign of fatigue is that your outside shooting goes to pot and the next is defense. All oats needs to do,if the damage isn't already too great, is recognize what's happened and let them get their legs back under themselves and they'll get back to being the team they were in early December. If he doesn't recognize it and make the adjustments very quickly he's going to loose this team and it's going to get really ugly in more ways than just wins and losses.

To me winning 2+ would confirm what we already know: we play to the level of our competition. While that makes for an unbelievably frustrating regular season, it does bode well for the post-season.
However, losing all 3 could be a sign that this team has given up on itself. I'm interested in what will happen, because at this point you can't call it a fluke like we could with the Mizzou loss. UGA has been one of the worst high-major teams in the country, and was our worst regular season KenPom loss of all time. Are they going to wake up or just roll over dead?
PS- Regardless of the outcomes, I believe that we've got a coach who can take us to the next level!

This season has been frustrating and about as bad as it could be, but these seasons happen in basketball, especially since transfers started being more prominent 5-7 years ago. Everyone has seasons like this. Literally everyone.
Nice post, I needed to see that list today.

Playing the toughest schedule in the country has to take its toll too. Having to be on every game , all game ,can be exhausting. Mental fatigue is a thing too.
Having Primo and Burnett would have mitigated the scoring burden but now we basically have just 3 scorers . Night in and night out.

Bamafan is already posting on Twitter essentially guaranteeing a win Saturday. He’s moved well into the optimism stage. I’m not there yet. Not sure I will.

please refresh my mind on this this sounds very familiar but I can’t remember exactly what happened
It was after everybody got ejected against Minnesota for walking on the court after Dazon got in a fight. So he had Lawson and Donta fake fight so we could practice staying on the bench.

OHHHHH I REMEMBER THAT

We truly have a stupid team if no one could tell that fight was fake
Not this team, but that one (even though this one is damn close)

I can just see Lawson throwing out an “insult” at Donta and them both start laughing while Avery just mindlessly stares at them

Yea, A fake fight makes no sense……….. it might have happened, but shite. Avery’s wife might have started that rumor

These are our only 2 plus/plus (off + def) lineups this season. When Gary is back I'd like to see a whole helluva lot more of them
PG - Davison
SG - Shackelford
SF - Ellis
PF - Miles/Gurley
C - Gurley/Gary

I feel like some of us are trying to make excuses or rationalize these losses. The Georgia loss is inexcusable. We just lost to probably the worst high major in the country. Georgia lost to Wofford, ETSU, George Mason, and Gardner Webb, the latter 2 by double digits. Alabama should have been able to play their C game and win a closer than it should be game. In other words, they did not show up AT ALL! I just can’t get past that. The lack of pride and competitive spirit is very disheartening. And don’t say I’m being too rough on them and that I don’t know what’s going on in the minds. You’re right, I don’t, but name me one instance where it appeared that someone besides Oats was upset or cared that they lost.
