Yeah, in a nutshell, we just have to shoot better and, really, be better offensively in general: pace (seems like we are playing slower even with the often smaller lineups), not blow as many advantageous fast breaks, not make turnovers that lead to easy baskets the other way.
Most people knew that losing Herb and Petty would hurt us defensively but the ones saying that we'd still have a chance to be better thought we'd at least replace them with better perimeter shooting (Herb) and dribble driving (Petty). . . a "better fit" for Oats' style of play.
Instead, while struggling more than imagined defensively, we're not taking advantage of the mismatches that limit us defensively on the offensive end.
Not to say we don't need or can't improve defensively but the real disappointment is the degree to which the offense has fizzled out.
I fully expected games where a Miss St et. al. manhandles us on the boards but they still didn't have the firepower to match 12 or 13 made 3 pt shots that night.

LSU will be an interesting game. They are really good defensively but struggle offensively. We might can keep them in front of us.

We weren’t great on defense and rebounding when we were 8-1 and ranked #6 after beating Gonzaga and Houston, either. That’s really not the part that has changed.
It’s the shooting.
We were 35% from 3 on 30 attempts/game during the first 9 games through Houston (8-1). That’s 10.5 made 3’s per game.
In the 8 games since (3-5), we are 28% on 30 attempts. That’s 8.4 made per game.
Thats a difference of 6 points per game.
Our 5 losses:
Memphis by 14
Davidson by 1
Mizzou by 6
Auburn by 4
Miss St by 2
If we shoot 35% from 3 in those 5 games like we did the 1st 9 games, we win 4 of them and we are sitting at 15-2 and ranked in the Top 10.

One thing I'd like to see more, is JD Davison dunk it. He's just gotta learn how to not draw charges, or be indecisive in the paint once his initial plan gets covered. Fewer charges and turnovers, and he's gonna be a monster to deal with. I just hope he's figures it out while at Bama, and not drafted early based on potential.
With a proper NBA minor/developmental league in existence, the 1 and done rule is stupider than ever. Lebron averaged 20.9 ppg as a rookie. This isn't football. Some guys are ready at 18. And the ones that are potential based picks have the G league. Some guys will still choose college, because nil. Others can be developed by their organization, so they have full control over their development. It'll let guys go to the level that they're ready for, without the bullshite restrictions.
It's also less frustrating for college fans. Imagine this team with Primo. Seeing elite guys on your team, without getting to see them dominate, kinda sucks. It's like basketball fan blue balls.

Shack's slump has been the biggest difference between the 1st 9 games and the last 8 games.
While everyone knows Quinerly is in a huge shooting slump this season, shooting 24.7% from 3 after shooting 43.3% last year, he has been like that all year.
First 9 games for Shack, per game:
2pt: 2.7/5.8 (46.2%)
3pt: 4.0/8.8 (45.6%)
PPG: 19.1
Last 8 games for Shack, per game:
2pt: 2.5/5.5 (45.5%)
3pt: 2.0/7.9 (25.4%)
PPG: 12.9

Our offense is not capable of running at a high level in the halfcourt unless we go unconscious from three.
I’m fully aware a JD/Shack/Ellis/Miles/Gurley looks terrible as a defensive unit on paper, but running wings as bigs allows us to switch every screen on defense like we were able to last year with Petty/Herb. Miles/Gurley don’t hold a candle individually to either of those two but they’re long and athletic for the position.
There’d be more chaos on defense and that
inevitably leads to more turnovers. As we’ve seen with our high points from the last two seasons we’re deadly when we can get out and run with our speed and shooters.

what shooting % does a Nate Oats team have to have to be successful game in and game out? Are we close to that number
It depends on how much we get out rebounded, and how many time we turn the ball over...because it's gonna happen a bunch against the good teams.
You'll get your answer when we play Baylor.

I like how Miles and Gurley have played the last 2 games.
But we’ll only go as far as JQ and JD take us. If this play continues its gonna be a long season.
If the light turns on for both of them/inconsistencies drop drastically, you’ll start seeing the team offensively at the beginning of the year

I mean I hate to make assumption but I’m betting JQ got complacent this offseason and didn’t work near as hard.

Agreed. You aren't winning without top level point play. We currently don't have that.

You’re not wrong, but just accepting that if shots don’t fall you’re going to lose isn’t comforting. You have to be able to win in multiple ways if you’re a good team.

If I had to pick one player that hasn’t developed to his assumed potential, it’s Quinerly with Gurley a close second. A 5 star PG should be able to dominate a game. Q has seldom if ever done that. He’s good but he’s a role player and that is all we should expect from him. Someone else has to pick up the mantle of alpha.
Gurley has been a big disappointment out of the portal. He’s averaging 7.2 points and 3.5 rebounds this season. Not what we had hoped for.
This team seems to have bad chemistry. I don’t think it’s one bad apple, they just don’t seem to mesh well.

I know he has FLAWS all FRESHMAN do. His defense isn't good because often times he ball watch. The charity game is what leads me to BELIEVE that JD has a lot more to offer if giving the chance to lead. He differs a lot because there's older guys on the floor but those older guys are playing just as WORSE on defense then he is.
JD was the lead man all through highschool so now he's had to learn how to take on another role which he's inconsistent at because his assertiveness isn't there like it normally would be if he was starting.
My opinion and trust me...I am not offended by your take. Everybody has a different one but we all LOVE BAMA so that's one thing we can agree on.

JD flourishes in the open court. When you box him in and clog the lanes his deficiencies are apparent. Him playing at the same time as any combo of Gary/Rojas with Bediako is no bueno.
