It was technically correct in the rule book but the part that is unfortunate and should've maybe been discussed is the entire team was off the bench ready to celebrate with the guys because it was a media timeout and then the skirmish happened, if it was a regular whistle and then the skirmish I doubt anyone on our bench would've been down there, let alone the halfcourt line.

Also, idk what it would take for Bruce Pearl to get a tech at this point. He either has the vocabulary of a Disney character while looking like a tomato about to burst or the officials are just used to it after all these years and call a tech when he gets really spicy.

Even if you consider that it was a media timeout and, as always, most of the bench comes out to "greet" the guys on the floor, I think Griffen being tossed was the right call. He went all the way down to the end of the floor to the other team's bench area and where the confrontation was. That is exactly what they are trying to stop with the rule. He didn't really engage or escalate but still.

They easily could have decided not to eject Chuck. He made it to mid court but stopped. He was never close to the confrontation. If the rule is "past midcourt" or something (I don't know if that is actually some rule - I've never seen it) then I guess he did take like one step over for about two seconds. I would have ejected Griffen but not Chuck.

OK I didn't really understand where guys were on the floor. It just sounded like dudes left the bench because of the media timeout and got ejected because there was coincidentally a scuffle between JQ and Green (surprised that one took so long to happen) going on at the same time.

Some salt from Auburn board

quote:

People forget covid. Everything was running fine, and we were 100% clicking heading into the tournament beforehand. Covid season was such a joke that Duke, Auburn, and Kentucky didn't care enough to try and make the tournament. Then the staff shite themselves with Green and Zep under uncertain conditions because Pearl was still having to obey the NCAA. Oats used that time to vulture the empty arena covid season, and buy recruiting classes pre-NIL while everybody was concerned with the pandemic, FBI fallout, Kansas, and social justice scamming. Everybody can buy players now, and Bama is fricked

Yeah, our whole bench was on the floor. They were all just on our side and celebrating except Rylan and Chuck though. Rylan went all the way down to the other end. Chuck made it maybe 5 feet past half court and turned around. Gurley was celebrating with Brandon and then started to go down where the altercation was, but then Hodgson ran over like his hair was on fire and grabbed as many as he could and told them all to get back to the bench. Oats was also out there at half court a second later yelling at our guys and had a one on one with JQ as soon as he got to half court.

I've sat close enough to Pearl a couple of games to hear alot of what he says and you are actually kind of on to something. He really will yell things like "Jiminy Christmas," "bullcrap" and "son of a ..." but stop short. I mean he is yelling it like he wants to strangle someone but the actual words are usually pretty tame. I think he's really worked on this. It's kind of hilarious.

Last night was the best sporting event I’ve ever been to. What a freaking game. Coleman was absolutely incredible.

What was bullshite was Green trying to play grab-arse with JQ after the play. It was clear he approached him after the whistle and tried the old handcuff maneuver.

JQ was having none of it.

I ask again, why was that douchebag allowed to even be in our athletic complex in the first place ? His media credentials should be taken away. As an alum, I don't want him anywhere near Nick Saban or Nate Oats.

Well unfortunately some loser took this to the Supreme Court over Trump's White House removing his credential, and the morons on the SCOTUS bench at that time pretended it was a constitutional issue that people have press credentials.

I imagine the University would rather not have to deal with a stupid lawsuit like that one, that should have been laughed out of court, and would rather just not call on him for questions.

ETA: A lot of very short-sighted people who supported this at the time are coming to slowly realize their mistake.

Oh what a night. Coleman was rocking just like the good old days. So happy for the team and the coaches. (and, of course, for me)

Coach Oats' post game press conference

Probably a good idea. Just ignore anyone from AL.com in a press conference from now on and maybe they'll go out of business.

They should let him in, it's a public place.

They should never call on him in press conferences ever again and any written requests should get stock, boilerplate answers.

Or no answers at all. They don't have to respond to questions from al.com.

I really didn't mind any of that. I think Green thought he was sticking up for Broome (although JQ's spike off his head was a legitimate basketball play to save possession) and of course Green and JQ are both going to do what they do at least once a game in an intense end of season rivalry game.

In the end there was hardly anything there but for the media timeout bringing players on the floor and escalating it a bit (still nothing really happened). Also love Sears pretty calmly getting in between JQ and Green to break it up, pretty sure he just had a little smile on his face like "okay you two have had your little fun."

To me you need guys like JQ and guys like Sears on a team to balance out the junk yard dog and the calmer presence. Like the yin and the yang.

Remember that Mike Rodak was the one who videoed Saban last year at the booster club in Birmingham when he called Texas A&M out for paying players and it blew up in the national media. AL.com does absolutely nothing positive for our program.

a few things

I didn't understand the ejections either because it was a media timeout. Everyone always comes on the court. Now if they went too far, it was hard to tell in person because it was chaotic. It really didn't hurt us though because Bediako and Griffin weren't going to play late regardless.

People keep saying the delay really helped us. Nah. The comeback had already started. As soon as the lead was cut to 10, the place came alive and Aub felt the pressure of the night. If anything, I thought it may hurt us at the time. We had the momentum at that point.

I don't like the Bruce is fat chants either. Meh. They can do better.

The crowd was amazing. Last 10 minutes and OT were absolutely nuts.

Feels good!

They'll just turn around and ask questions in the form of public records requests that do require an answer. Easier to hit reply, attach the stock statement, and move on with the day.
