Updates from practice this morning:
Preseason nuggets (practice No. 11)
A couple notable observations:
-Richard Young, Jihaad Campbell and Olaus Alinen were all riding the stationary bikes during the viewing period.
-DeVonta Smith and Daniel Hill were not spotted (Hill was in a sling at Sunday's open practice)

Hopefully the play calling will be better, BUT OC Nick Sheridan has two years in his coaching career at Indiana of calling plays . I am sure he will adjust to SEC play in time, but expect a learning curve. Wommack (DC) has also never called plays in the SEC. It will take time, be patient.

People here really don't understand how bad these coordinator and some position hires since Pruitt, then Sark left.
Im going to upset people again, but there is a lot of truth to what you just said.
-BOB - disaster of a disinterested OC
-WR evals post 2018 (Metchie, Bond and ....?)
-OL evals & development post 2019 (Latham, Booker, Roberts, Proctor and...?)
-RB evals post 2018 (Najee & Robinson, Miller/Haynes/Young TBD)
-Scheme under Golding
-Saban was basically DC last year because Steele was semi retired in place
Everyone bags on Golding (largely with reason), but that entire offensive unit was living on the transfer portal (Williams, Burton, Gibbs, Steen, etc) from 2021 to 2023 because we could no longer effectively evaluate and develop players like we had been previously.
Last year was pure Saban force of will and we came within a few bad snaps of likely winning a NC again.
Things would've been completely different had we landed Grubb at OC and had Pruitt been allowed to coach again, but it is what it is.
I mean compare it to Kirby who had Bobo (former HC, former UGA OC) and two HC caliber DCs in Muschamp and Schuman to lean on and he still lost the SECCG.
The hard reality is that without better assistants and analysts there was way too much on Saban at that point in his career to keep the dynasty going long term.

It was an absolutely amazing thing he pulled off last season. He basically did it on his own. What a freaking shame that he didn’t get one more on the way out, but it wouldn’t have changed his legacy as the greatest football coach in NCAA history. The man deserves a few buildings and roads named after him at the minimum…oh yeah, and a stadium too, that field naming nonsense still makes me upset.

I'm not going to lie, I really miss Saban's press conferences. With all the new access to the coaches, I don't feel like I've heard much interesting from any of them, including Deboer. It's just a lot of boring coach speak in every interview.

I was watching Wommack,"coaching them up" around the 4:40 mark.
I got to thinking if Saban would have hired Nick Sheridan over Reese would he have retired.

You're used to 17 years of hearing the GOAT talk. Not sure what you were expecting to hear from DeBoer and co. Coaches are pretty boring most of the time.
Outside of Saban's Monday pressers following a game to find out if anyone was injured, I didn't exactly hang on every word he said in every interview.
One thing Saban was great at though, and something I hope DeBoer adopts, was discouraging dumbass questions from reporters. He had little patience for bullshite from the media. If you came with one, Nick's response was usually a highlight.

So I watched 90% of Saban's pressers. I didn't realize until I started watching KDB's that I wasn't watching Saban's because of Alabama football, I was watching because of Saban.
Obviously I don't perform at the high level that Saban preaches in my life, but I do perform better, handle failure better, respond to adversity in a healthier way because of the values he constantly advocated for. It left a significant impact on me as a person.
KDB is great and I respect him, but yeah, it's not going to be the same and I think many people will be less compelled to tune in to everything he says.

100%
Me getting old might also be a contributor, but I think mostly it's just that Saban actually said stuff worth hearing sometimes. Nothing against Deboer or the other guys, but I find that I usually stop listening to what they're even saying within the first couple minutes.

We had some horrible position and coordinator hires in the last two to three years of Saban. Rees, O’Brien Hutzler

I’d add Wiggins in there too.

Teague did you miss the post right above you?

We need to pump the brakes on Sheridan.
He’s been fired twice after one season (Indiana OC & South Florida passing cooridinator).
I’d argue he got wrapped up in the debacle that was Willie Taggert at USF and that the IU situation was largely due to losing Penix and his backup QB to injuries, but let’s not start thinking he’s some finished product prodigy as a play caller.
He has a solid pedigree, has worked with DeBoer in the past and is pretty well thought of as a QB coach, but this is going to be a wait and see situation with him IMO.
Objectively from a resume standpoint he’d be in the bottom three of any coordinator we hired under Saban at the time they were hired with Applewhite and Nussmeier.
Doesn’t mean it won’t work out, just means we need to let it play out.

Scenario should be if we landed Grubb and didn’t settle for Rees.

I guess that depends on who you think is really calling the shots for the offense. Is it Sheridan or DeBoer? People ask the same questions about teams like Ole Miss and Texas. Are Flood and Weiss Jr. given free reign or are Kiffin and Sark really the ones making the decisions?

What I know is that at Washington, Sark called the plays.
