Kids showed up for at least a half during the Shula era in September games against Western Carolina and Utah State.

But how long were those games compared to today? Our 1st home game this season was 3 hrs 30 min from kickoff to final whistle. We won by 50.

And for a 3:30 CBS game? A student isn't going to show up to a 3:30 SEC game because it's fvckin hot?

They are showing up to the SEC games, but why should they stay past halftime when we're already up by 35? Every game is on TV these days and the picture is much better than it was in 2003.

It's not that hard to figure out. Due to our success everything is extremely expensive - you have to make two night reservations, find parking, allocate an entire weekend to traveling, etc. Or you can just watch it in your living room. It's not just us, every team is facing this problem.

The decline in home attendance is due to a variety of factors and I believe most of them have been mentioned here:

1) The creampuff schedule
2) The sheer dominance of Alabama during the games
3) The rise of HD/UHD television
4) The rising out-of-state student population
5) The fact that every game is now on national TV

While there's nothing quite like being at an Alabama game, there is also nothing quite like watching the game from the comfort of your own home on a 65" wall-mounted HD television screen.

There has always been something lacking to me about our fan base in regards to how we come out and support our teams. I was a hard-core fan during my time as a student. I was also a part of the student groups trying to improve the atmospheres of our sporting events. I don't know what it is, yall might have an idea, but we would never be able to pull off an atmosphere like what was seen during this past weekend's game at Penn State.

It's even worse with basketball, and I'm afraid that the new facility upgrades won't do anything to help. We seem to always have a segment of our students, season-ticket holders, and general fans, who always have the mentality that they don't have to do anything to contribute to the atmosphere when that is truly what helps the team and with recruiting. I went to my first bball game in Rupp Arena when we played UK last season and that atmosphere was amazing.

We've heard Saban beg for fans to create a better atmosphere, but I think there is just something within the culture of our fan base that will keep us from providing what our team deserves. And it doesn't make sense because I've seen plenty of blue blood programs be able to do it.

A lot of people here might not want to hear it, but block seating is a big issue. At least when non-Greek students don’t show up, it’s a little bit more spread out. When entire Frats/Soroities don’t show up or leave early, it leaves a giant hole in our end zone that is very visible on TV.

I was there during Dubose. Early cupcake games were just like it was last week. Not a problem getting in the student section.

I'm not saying kids should show up to ULL and stay the entire game. I think the student section should be 80-90% full for a half. Or at least 75% full.

If we are up 35 at halftime I have no problem with people/kids leaving.

I roll my eyes at Saban getting mad about people leaving early in 40 point thrashings, but I think they have a point when they run out for kickoff and the student section is literally 50% full. There are enough people who would show up for the 1st half that we shouldn't ever have that many empty seats. Regardless of who has "first right of refuseful".

Nah, as somebody who sits on that side and pays attention that doesn't have anything to do with it anymore.

The non-block seating section and upper decks were noticeably more empty than the block seating sections were at the start of the 3rd quarter vs A&M. Against ULL they were all sparse.

Anyone who doesn't use tickets should either sell them or else give them to someone who'd love to go to the game.

I think games like last Saturday are bad for the sport. This season I stop caring as much when Tua goes out.

I'd love to go and take the family but I can't afford 5 tickets along with all the other expense that comes with it.

If I could join in? And I can only speak for myself. Ok?

I find the atmosphere too loud. Ok? Fans can be very shrilly. And some of the cheers show a lack of sensitivity. Ok? They can be hurtful.

The color scheme is too aggressive and stressful to the senses. I mean right? Red triggers anger. Ok? Couldn’t we be a little more understated in our color choices? More grays, greens, blues and purples?

And could we please de emphasize this “winning” obsession? Right? Remember, if we insist on a winner, we’re also forcing the other kids to be losers. Ok? I would prefer that both teams win. At least in some sense? There are a lot of things other that touchdowns and kick points? Which team was neater? Which team was the most well behaved? Sportsmanship you know.

And the band doesn’t get enough time. That’s a real pet peeve of yours truely.

The bathrooms could be cleaner. I need arm rests. I own nothing colored crimson and I NEVER WILL.
Tacky tacky tacky.

Lol. I digress. But I wanted to put my two cents in. Lol. And have a wonderful hump day.

Honestly, I think some are being a bit unfair to the students. I don't think the empty seats in the student section are astronimcally higher than the rest of the stadium on a per capita basis for most games. It comprises about 15-20% of the stadium and it's general admission. So when people start leaving, the other move down, and it creates the huge voids we see on TV. I've been to games in Tide Pride sections where there are several empty seats. At last year's Arkansas game, the whole row in front of me was almost completely empty, and these were 30 yard line seats in the lower bowl. If people in the reserved sections moved down as people left, we'd see huge blocks of empty seats for a lot of games.

Saban joyless murder ball can barely hold my attention at home on TV. No way I would give up an entire day for an 11:00 am kick against U LA La. Plenty of blame to go around about the situation but it happens all over CFB and not unique to Tuscaloosa.

The schools need to take a look at themselves first before placing any blame on the fans though. They sold out everything for the quickest buck and don't like how the fans/alumni respond.

Plenty of students skipped games when I was in school.

I was a student when we still played half of our home games at Legion Field, and I can only recall a couple of games in that time where the student section wasn't completely full.

If you live 3 blocks away from BDS you are literally giving up the 10 minutes of walking and the 1-2 hours you are inside the stadium until you leave.

That excuse works for all of us, it doesn't work for students.

The student section was never even close to that empty when I was in school in the early/mid 2000s. Not close.

College football has peaked. The South will be the last to follow the downward trend.

My ultimate goal is for us to win so much, that the rest of college football becomes so disinterested that the sport basically deteriorates to what women's college basketball was during UConn's run.

I want complete domination and submission.

I very much like this. That is the worthiest goal I've ever heard.

Games in those days were always in doubt. We lost to LA Tech, Hawaii, Northern Illinois. That doesn't happen anymore plus kids today are just different.

Dogshit opponent, Dogshit Time is going to have bad attendance. That is not immune to the students.
