Right. The schools sign it. But the athlete's third party agreements are private. Even if a kid signs an agreement with the University I would be surprised if it survives a court challenge. All very fascinating in a sort of deranged way.

My understanding the goal of the agreement they want signed is a player would not be able to sign with a school if they had a NIL deal that did not align with the school agreement. And once they signed the contract with the school they could not seek out an NIL deal outside of those parameters under NILGo or they would void their contract with the school and no longer have a team.

A player can sign any deal they want but the goal if a player does not agree to the school's agreement they will not play. If all schools sign this there is nothing a player or their agent can do. Once signed no school would be allowed to add that player to their roster unless they met the guidelines. Hence the reason they want everyone to sign because it would take the power away from the players. But those with big pockets are not willing to sign because they can corner the market.

Then kick them out of the ncaa and let them start their own league that’s a booster dick measuring contest.

Well Alabama football didn't start and end with Bryant, Stallings and Saban's tenures.... there were seasons in between them that still count.

Even during some of those we had some successes. Just not enough. If something doesn't change we will be going back to those days.

And there's the catch(s). All schools must sign it. And even if they do, I would expect fallback to the good old days. Schools will look the other way (no reporting) , athletes will deny (their income is private) and the agreements are just about as worthless as the paper they are written on.

Given the USSC's ruling, this is pretty much impossible. I'm not knocking your POV. I just don't see an end that doesn't involve total destruction and rebuild from the ground up.

And even during those 15 dark, mostly draconian probation sanctioned years, Alabama had a modicum of success with five 10+ win seasons (AU has only 14 in their entire 135 year existence), 7 times ranked in the final AP poll, 5 times ranked in the top 11, 5 Western division titles, 3 SECC game appearances, 1 SEC title, 10 bowls (2 years ineligible).

The one opening I see is that it seems that the combination of a natural business cycle, a clear over-speculation in AI that cannot possibility live up to the level investment, and some externalities could lead to a massive recession like 2008 in the next year or so. I think there are some attempts to push this past 2026 for electoral reasons by priming the pump with cheaper debt, but the reckoning is coming.

In that wake of that reckoning, a lot of the silly money out there is going to dry up. Much like the Crash of 1929 brought everyone down enough pegs that there was a more shared experience of the struggle - amplified by the younger generation who grew up in the wake of that crash fighting a global war - I suspect that the richest being brought low will change the calculus of everyone at the table. I don't think a period of legislation like the New Deal would have been possible without that leveling of socioeconomic hierarchy.

In this hypothetical moment, perhaps a cleaner solution that is better and more sustainable for all the interested parties will emerge in college football.

I'm starting to wonder if we're going to be converting some of these tight ends into linemen.

Come on man, the University could never pay Saban enough for what he brought to it. I guess ~$150 million or so in salary and it was probably the great bargain in American sports history. It’s not quite at the level of Peter Minuit’s purchase of Manhattan for $24 from the Lenape but it’s in the ball park. What Denny, Wade, Bryant and Saban have brought to the University and state can hardly be measured. Certainly not accurately. Half a mill in perpetuity to him then his heirs wouldn’t be unreasonable. But he don’t need it - probably gives it to his valet who ties his shoes, salts and peppers his food, cranks his car and opens his doors.

It'll be interesting to see if Conor Talty enters the portal now.

He probably refused to sign wanting to “finalize their negotiations”. What did it hurt to enroll? If they thought he might still be in play, in Alabama’s mind it was another link to the school, even if they saw through his machinations.

Ty Haywood is almost certainly the best "non-starter-that-projects-to-start" OT prospect in the portal. This is a big win for our staff if it holds.
