2004 would have been a pretty decent season too if not for losing the entire backfield to injuries. I agree with you that he stabilized the program some, but they did also get in NCAA trouble due to the textbook scandal that occurred on his watch. I'm not sure coaches had anything to do with that or were aware of it at all because it continued into the first five games under Saban.

The NCAA was also targeting Alabama at this time too, there's no doubt about that. Carroll's cheating at USC was an open secret and they didn't even look into it until an unrelated lawsuit exposed it. They really seemed to relish punishing Alabama. When sanctions would come down, they would release statements basically flipping the bird saying the program was lucky not to have the death penalty. Then when they punished Penn State (again, a program they had never investigated, it came through the FBI) you could tell it broke their heart to do it and they later reversed it for no reason. In fact, the Big Ten basically never got in trouble in those days and has been plagued with scandals ever since the NCAA's power was diminished.

When did this turn into the reminisce on the Shula days thread?

Everybody in the SEC was cheating, too. Auburn was buying players by the bushel and Fulmer was very dirty. Mild understatement.

Who do you think the final additions will be to the defensive side of the ball.

DL- Freddie Roach
OLB- Kane Wommack (DC) or DJ Durkin
MLB- Robert Bala or DJ Durkin
CB- Karl Scott or Derrick Ansley or Jay Hopson (Underrated)
S- Haha Clinton-Dix or Chuck Morrell or Will Harris
ST- Todd Goebbel or Doug Deakin or Brian Haines

Just throwing names around...

It's kinda crazy that we already have former Alabama players under Saban turn into coaches. I've seen chatter about the former players.

Former WR Kevin Norwood
Former DL Nick Gentry
Former S HaHa Clinton-Dix

You have former LB Shaun Dion Hamilton doing really well with the Detroit Lions. Former S Vinnie Sunseri the RB coach for the Patriots (or was).

I'd love to pull SDH at some point. Let's get him seasoned.

I feel like Morrell will likely be in there somewhere, but surprised he hasn’t been announced yet, so maybe he wants to stay out west.

Durkin and Scott would be nice additions

Morrell might have an off the field role. Jay Hopson had South Alabama's secondary jumping this season. They were some ball hawks on the back end.

Bargaining. It's just part of the stages of grief. If you look at some of the posts about hires here, some folks have definitely been stuck in the anger phase.

Seriously though, it wa the last time we were in a scenario of massive change. A lot of younger fans probably don't even remember that era and just how upside down things were. Consider it folks channeling how bad it could still could be without Saban coming to town.

I'm pretty sure this year was it for Julio Jones. Can we just clear a spot for him to come back?

Agreed, Shula came into an impossible situation in 2003 joining a team and putting together a staff less than 4 mothns before the season started. Can you imagine if the transfer rules were in place then? He would have struggled to field a team. Bama played with very limited depth in those years due to sanctions and injuries and he was the band aid for Saban.

Talty posted on 247 that Downs would like to stay and that Wommack’s first call/visit would be with Downs to explain how he will be used in the new defense.

Retaining Downs would be a major victory and something that people across the internet have been saying DeBoer couldn't do.

Downs and Saban are close. Don't think he'll leave with Saban still in the area.

This was always my thought. Saban is still going to close some of these open threads.

On top of that, DeBoer is NOT cleaning house with the support staff, etc. We are keeping the system in tact (for the most part).

Don't fix things that aren't broken. DeBoer is keeping what works well. I really like that and I think that will set him up for success sooner than later. IMO.

Did he graduate yet? I remember him going back, but don't recollect if he actually finished.

Has anyone seen the salaries of the Support Staff? Do they typically post those?

Todd Goebbel going to Bama I wouldn't love. Not because he isn't a good coach; he's a really good ST and RB coach. But because my son and his youngest son are good friends and play Flag and Pop Warner together.

Also our local high school would be down their starting RB if his oldest son moved with him.

Todd is a solid guy and they are a super nice family. Would be a good pickup for Bama, but not for us here personally.
