I was as mad at the goal line calls as anyone. But given that it's BoB's first season with us, I'll give him at least a bit of grace and benefit of the doubt. And if we see more play calls like that costing us easy points then I'll be on him like I am others. As George Bush said, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice? Can't get fooled again.

Here's the thing about BoB though. There could be some complaining about the playcalling and such up until this game, but overall, it's been pretty good. Results have been good. Results in this game were pretty good, not enough, could have been better. But pretty good. 31 offensive points, with this young offense, against that defense, is like a B or B+ grade.

Because of the defense though, we needed an A. Because they gave up 34 offensive points to a team over the course of 60 minutes, that couldn't score 33 against Miss. St. and Arkansas in 120 minutes. A team with a bum backup QB and high schoolers playing offensive line. They couldn't even get a game to overtime that we had a TD lead in with 5 minutes to go. Instead they give up 120 yards of offense and 14 more points and they get ripped through like a hot knife through butter.

And the worst part is, none of this felt shocking. That it happened in THIS game, sure, surprising. But watching the mistakes that were being made, nothing about them was new. We've seen the same exact issues over and over and over again now.

Pete has been here for basically 4 years. And yeah Pete has some good games like Ole Miss every season and everyone backs down on sandbagging him. But lets be honest, is that the standard at UA? "Oh that's ok, you can be passably good in 11/15 games every year and below average to total disaster in the other 4."

I mean how many times are we going to see the TE over the middle routes gash us. The bad run fits by ILBs. The delayed blitzes that take 4 seconds to get to the QB... even if they work perfectly. The players not being able to get lined up. The poor tackling form. Poor angles.

I mean at some point when all the players change and the problems stay the same, you have to look at the constant in the situation. And when you do that for our defense you realize, it's Pete.

No, he's not.

Our totally rebuilt offense has gone into the Swamp and Kyle and put up 31 offensive pts against 2 competent defenses in insane environments, including clutch 4th quarters in both games that did win and should have won the games.

Our defense, led by a 4th year coordinator and with experience all over, has been gashed by 2 average to bad offenses and given up 29 and 34 pts, including total collapses in the 4th quarter.

The offense has been up and down, but they've been very close to general expectation given the personel and inexperience. You can nit pick individual play or drive calls (some have been maddening), but the production has been more than enough.

The defense has been a disaster, and they own this. This was the cohesive, experienced unit that was the one to prove Golding could be a high level defensive coordinator. It has absolutely collapsed and burned.

BOB's play calling was terrible, but he got us where we need to win the game. The goal line decison was stupid but let's not hang him just yet. He'll learn from it.

Ya, he will get better - he is learning the offense as well.

Biggest things on offense were a lack of blitz recognition largely across the board and a terrible oline play. Bryce made some key mistakes, but he I don't think this one was on him.

Overall, the offense has performed well and we can fix the mistakes relatively easily. Our defense has been a multi-year problem and they can barely tackle.

I don't want to have to replace both OC and DC. Golding needs to go - hopefully we can get Pruitt back and then BoB can move on after next year or the following - if we can get the defense playing well, then BoB will be just fine for us. He isn't a mastermind who can make up for the defense being shite though.

Yeah, it definitely bothered me that they were obviously blitzing and we would empty the backfield or just leave the RB in to pick it up with a QB that was obviously rattled. We're fortunate there weren't a couple of intentional grounding penalties and at least one more interception. That seems like something the OC's responsibility.

Somebody needs to recognize it - I'm sure Bryce has the authority to recognize and audible that but BoB should have been putting those calls in initially after seeing that it wasn't happening on the field.

Our center was also terrible at recognizing what was about to happen. Part of it was that they seemed to know exactly when we were planning to snap it and were excellent at timing their blitzes.

I don’t necessarily think O’Brien is the worst, I think he needs to learn that in the college game you can yield higher leverage points when one facet of your offense seems to be working better, and that you shouldn’t shy away from calling something that is working based merely on its predictability. The 2012 SEC Championship game is a prime example of this. The 2015 season with Henry, same story.

He'll learn from it???!! Wtf?! he isn't a rookie. He's a pro...he should know this now... If he doesn't, then he wasn't the right guy.

Christ, I didn’t mean to give you an embolism, just saying I think he needs to readjust from calling games like he’s still in the NFL.

O'Brien has coached in college as recently as 2012...not very recent but the college game shouldn't be something he needs to learn....he's earned millions as a HC/OC so if this is his style then he wont change. When someone shows you who they really are...believe them.

You guys know Saban also adapted his philosophies when something didn’t work, right?

It was an exact copy of Doug Pussmeier against aTm in 2012. I'm still pissed about that.

I don't mind getting beat. But lack of effort and coaching stupidity drive me nuts.

This exactly. We all knew the offense was going to take a step back this year. The defense is supposed to be the better side of the ball this year. It's inexcusable on how bad this defense has been. The offense made the defense look good that last couple of years because generally we were good for 45 points, it puts opposing offenses in passing only scenarios to get back in the game. It's easy to make a defense look good when the opposing team is one dimensional on offense.

You don't have to "learn the offense" to put the QB under center and two 300 pound DLs as up-backs in front of BRob with the ball on the 1 yard line.

Throwing the ball on that play was just plain stupid.

I never said it wasn't, just that he will hopefully get better as he gets a feel for the playbook.

Saban addresses Alabama's lack of runs in the red zone at Texas A&M (BOL)

quote:

“I don’t know if we challenged them running it as much as maybe we could, and that’s one of the things that I think we need to work on trying to improve on.”

Golding is much more of a problem than O'Brien. I've seen enough expert analysis of PG's schemes to conclude that he's essentially incompetent.
