Lanning or Kiffin are about the sure thing home run hires that are in play. At least with Kiffin the offense would not be unbearable and like him or not, he is relatable to kids. Also wouldn't mind if he brought dart with him for his last season lol. Also he might be able to reel in Ryan williams again
Lanning would be great and I don't see how you would turn down the job if it's offered. The players that are here currently he could do alot with.

Lanning's name has been hot since 4:00 yesterday afternoon and he's not said anything. That's not a bad sign for those hoping it's him.

Hiring someone who would try to be Saban might be the single biggest mistake we could make
Agree to disagree
I mean, a big reason we wandered in the wilderness for most of the years between Bryant and Saban was the constant urge to hire guys with connections to Bryant. It only worked once.

Let me put one thing to rest for some of you. Saban did not wake up yesterday morning and decided to retire. He did not blindside Alabama or Greg Byrne. That’s not his style. Again, from my loosely connected source, Saban contacted Greg Byrne sometime between the Auburn game and the playoffs and told him that he might want to start thinking about what life after Nick Saban looked like for Alabama. That set the wheels in motion. Last week he again contacted Greg Byrne and told him to draw up two sets of papers one for a contract extension, the other one for retirement. He told him that he would let him know this week which set of papers were needed.,So things have been going on behind-the-scenes regarding this for at least a month. Thanks to Saban’s iron fist and Byrne the ninja, there were no leaks. Finally Monday Nick told Alabama what was happening and the plan was put in motion. Of course, Nick continued to work as if nothing were going on, because he’s that kind of man and professional to the end and how could he do any different without blowing his cover?
I haven’t heard any changes since last night. My source still stands by the ball is in Lanning’s court to make a decision, and if he says no Kiffin will set a land speed world record from Oxford to Tuscaloosa.
I wish I could tell you the wihy’s, but I have no confirmation of what that is. The overwhelming theory is that it’s Miss Terry‘s health, and I have no reason to doubt that. A contributing factor could be that Nick is just tired of the bullshite with the portal and with NIL. He warned college football this would happen, and once again, he has been proven, correct. While my own opinion is that was not the reason behind the decision, I think it was at least a factor.

Obviously, nobody here can say for sure, but if Lanning really does have a Nike "poison pill" stock vestment in his contract, then I don't see any way we hire him - that valuation + buyout + salary is a bit too steep for someone unproven. I think he has a chance to be a homerun, absurdly long-term hire, but I wouldn't pony up that much money to make it happen, if I had it.
If Sark has said no, which I expect he has or will, then you ask Lane, who would drag his nuts through glass all the way from Lafayette County to get the gig.

I wouldn't be surprised if he opened his door to all the players for individual meetings
Very good observation that I hadn't considered.
He most certainly meets with every player at least once a year and discusses their upcoming future plans and areas of need.
Would be a fitting way to go out.

While I have no idea whether Lanning is here, there or anywhere, I do know that Oregon has lost two coaches recently and both times Oregon message boards were in deep denial and claiming coaches were staying. Lanning may well stay at Oregon, but their message boards have proven they generally have no clue.
Yeah I mean losing their 3rd coach in a row would fully establish them as a stepping stone program and no one is going to accept that without going through denial, anger, and bargaining first.

The poison pill thing is likely nonsense. Some form of it would have been Cristobal's contract. It is definitely far fetched.

Yep, and he meets with them regarding NFL & Transfer decisions. I would be surprised if he didn't have meetings with them about the future of the program, and the future of their development post-Saban. He's a true class act, and I personally trust that he will leave UA in the best situation he can.

Don't know about anything health-related, but I can almost 100% guarantee that this was or is a contributing factor.
He's also been very concerned about several legal battles coming down the pike, especially regarding players being deemed employees.
Would any of this be the reason? Probably not. But I bet it's one of the straws.

I just got the word it’s Lanning. He’s flying back to tell his team today and coming back to Tuscaloosa tomorrow for it to be announced. Per former SEC official with some pretty deep ties in Tuscaloosa. Three different sources telling him same thing.

I would like to see this rumor from a few different sources to feel confident
So much smoke out there right now

True, I think Kiffin could get Williams, and George Macintyre to recommit and do great things in the future.

Him being there is huge. Press conference and maybe a handoff.

No coach in his right mind is going to sign a contract with that kind of language in it. Not only does it marry him to the job, it undercuts any leverage he'd ever have to Sexton his way to a raise.

I think the whole "nobody wants to follow Saban" thing is being overblown. The game is fundamentally different today than it was 2-3 years ago. The game is also going to be fundamentally changed next year with new conferences and a 12-team playoff. This means you're not really going to be able to directly compare Saban's successor to Saban because the circumstances around college football are going to be completely different than they were during Saban's tenure.
Note that Nick Saban never won a title in the NIL era.

Lanning and the possibility of Schumann makes this defensive minded heart happy. I would feel for Lane a bit..but Lanning is going to be a dude here.

Like I said last night, I’m hearing Lanning and nothing has changed as of this morning.
