JMO If Lanning doesn't want the job then quickly get Lane and his baggage. Hopefully he will show more maturity as he moves along in the job. If not, then be prepared for the next coach.
I think this he had a plan in place is overplayed. You can't go out and recruit kids to sign a month ago knowing you're out the door before the ink is dry.

On the one hand, I'm sure people said the same about Saban when LSU hired him. I mean he's from West Virginia and spent his whole career up North or in the NFL to that point. How's he going to relate to Southern kids?
Rhetorical Question….
How much is that a thing nowadays with it being more a global/national sport than ever before?
On the other hand, Saban was a big part of selling the program. Cali kids were coming to Bama in droves.
The North/South stigma wasn’t there. Will it be now?

I dont think this is as big of a deal as its being made out to be. Nate Oats did just fine here. Deboer is 47 hes a damn good coach. He would be just fine at Bama.
Nate Oats doesn't coach football. You cannot compare the two sports and the cultural significance of them to this state and fanbase. I don't think it's about recruiting. I think it's about how well someone can handle the pressure cooker that is a true big-time job. That's not Washington football and it's not Alabama basketball.

Hiring someone who would try to be Saban might be the single biggest mistake we could make
Yeah especially when college football isn't even college football anymore.
If Sark isn't it
If Lanning isn't it
It has to be Kiffin.
I don't even what to think of a Dabo, DeBoar, etc

Just saw a video of Saban arriving at the football building this morning. Wonder if they’re going to do any sort of press conference?

Agree to disagree

If it’s DeBoar or Norvell I will have a full melt. It’s too obvious that both would fail here. D because he’s not a fit and Norvell because he’s overrated. That dudes an average coach at best.

It's Lanning or Lane. It won't go past Lane. I don't think there's a plan C. Lanning may not think he's ready yet, which I understand. Lane would see a call from a 205 area code and scream "Yes" as he answered.

Would Greg Byrne go after someone known for offense or defense?
IMO he would go after someone versed in player recruiting and development, who can handle the unique rigors and extreme pressure of being a multi-million dollar coach in this league. Offensive and defensive adaptability is what makes Saban special.
And I don't think a program with one of the highest operating budgets in the nation and a 72-year-old head coach goes into this process without at least some sort of plan.
Or at least I hope they don't.

Would Byrne hire Lane after a few years ago Coach Saban fired him the week before the CFP Title Game for off the field stuff

Kiffin got custody of his children, and the children love being in Oxford, daughter at Ole Miss.

It's been 8 years and Kiffin has proven himself to be a pretty damn good HC since he left UA. He definitely learned plenty from Saban that he has implemented. But at the end of the day he's always going to be who he is, and that's not Nick Saban. Some fans won't like that and I get it.

I imagine he is there for a press conference or to facilitate his replacement. Or maybe both.

Would depend on Saban’s true thoughts on Lane. Byrne would obviously get Saban’s opinion on that.

Idk. But Lanning must have some kinda stealth technology or having a clandestine meeting with Byrne in the Ozark mountains. Nobody seems to know where the hell he is now

While I have no idea whether Lanning is here, there or anywhere, I do know that Oregon has lost two coaches recently and both times Oregon message boards were in deep denial and claiming coaches were staying. Lanning may well stay at Oregon, but their message boards have proven they generally have no clue.

I agree. I do think that speculation of a full plan being laid out is excessive. However Saban cares about UA, and more importantly he cares about his player. I don't think he would want to jeopardize their development. He is 100% going to be involved in these decisions, and I wouldn't be surprised if he opened his door to all the players for individual meetings. Just because Saban is leaving, the talent, culture, and development opportunity don't have to leave with him. If he assures the players that they have a quality team, and will hire a quality coaching staff to turn the reins over to... I don't think it's a hard sell. The names being pursued are all elite in their own right. GOATs? No. But the best out there for sure.
