You forget the other press conferences where he stuck up for him the past few years? I hated the Kiff hire at first but he is a great play caller. Several teams in this conference would love to have him.

No actually I am not.

That is why I was so surprised to hear Saban throw him under the bus after the game. It made me wonder about Kiffen's job stability.

A lot of teams would love to have a lot of coaches we have. I agree.

ETA: Honestly, as much as I disagree with Kiffen at times I was on his side following that W. Ky press conference. I think Saban should be above that in a press conference. Maybe I am too simple minded but I fail to see how telling the media he was chewing Kiffens arse is beneficial. Chew his arse...fine. Telling the media you were chewing arse???

I will reluctantly admit that Saban has won more college football games than I have so maybe I should defer to his judgement on how to effectively manage his OC and media.

- We have one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the country and never use him (OJ Howard).
- We NEVER throw to the middle of the field. Never.
- We never make a defense show that they can stop the run. We assume it the first time we're stopped for 2 yards.
- We CONSTANTLY kill drives with false starts and holding penalties.

So you are in agreement with the posters you are calling out then? ?

Not at all. I'm calling out the apparent notion by some that these guys should immediately be producing like veterans just because they were 4 and 5 star recruits.

I think Lane's biggest issue is that he comes up with a game plan and is determined to "make it work"

The jet sweeps and quick screens to the receivers...he's just hard headed. He doesn't mix it up until he's exhausted all efforts to make his plan that he came up with during the week work.

Today was frustrating because we were passing the ball on first down against a 5 man box, and running the ball on first down against an 8 man box. Don't call this play or that play for the sake of it. Take what the defense is giving you. A&M last year is probably the best game he has called. They lined up in a 4-2-5 and we just ran it down their throats and took our shots when the safeties came up. I completely understand running plays early to setup plays later, but there didn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the playcalling today. Thankfully we got 3 NOT's, but Kiffin needs to ditch the game plan if it isn't working and take what the defense is giving him. That'll get us beat in Fayetteville

Lane's only flaw is that sometimes he gets cute when vanilla would work.

You typically should only get cute if the vanilla stuff isn't working.

However if you believe you can effectively move the ball with standard play calling, you really should do that.

Kiff8n's play calling was frustrating but Bo, Dieter and Hengtes were far more frustrating.

- Bo is just... bench him.

- Dieter is a huge disappointment. He struggles to catch when wide open, he can't block for shite and he is slow.

- Hengtes is a hazard. He did more damage to the team and our players them he did to the opposition. He needs to get his head it is his arse.

The OL made some mistakes but they are getting better. We do have a run game and we can pass block decent enough. Hurts is developing as well.

This 21 point come from behind victory should do a lot for our mental strength and resilience.

Completely agree.

Everyone has flaws and this is his. Overall, however, he has exceeded expectations by a huge margin.

You also can't blame drops and player mistakes on him. He didn't cause the false starts. He also didn't overthrow a TE so open nobody was on the TV screen with him.

Overall, I thought the offensive plan was fine, just got to clean up the penalties and mistakes.

I was wondering if Lane was calling all the bubble screens just to piss Nick off for jumping on him last week. I know it was pissing me off, gonna get our
receivers hurt.

Kiffin is the best o.c. in the conference. His game planning and play calling has been a major factor that Alabama has won 2 conference titles and a national title in his 2 years here. He didn't all of a sudden, in the offseason, forget how to coach.

So what is the difference so far this year? A true freshman QB and the lack of experienced running backs (2 of them more true freshmen) comes immediately to mind. As for the lack of a killer intermediate and downfield passing game, we would like it even less if the freshman quarterback were throwing interceptions. As the qb and rbs progress, so, hopefully and probably, will the offense.

Thoughts after I collected myself...

Offense
-Kiffin is an outstanding play caller. However, the east/west stuff lingered far too long yesterday. It's part of what makes this offense successful but we were gashing them with the run north/south yesterday but Kiffin insisted on not noticing it until 3rd quarter.
-OL played much better, but the penalties have to be cleaned up. These false starts by an All-American LT are inexcusable.
-Dieter has to improve or he'll find himself on the sidelines. He's dropped a critical pass or two in every game this year. He's a senior, not a freshman. Has to do better.
-Where is OJ Howard? He needs more targets. True freshman QB is part of the reason tho I'm sure.

Defense
-Harrison was dreadful. Sophomore slump or whatever, the kid was exposed yesterday. He was the clear weak link IMO.
-Great to see them buckle down in the 2nd half to fight back and get the lead. However, we noticeably get a little passive when we get a lead. 18 point lead went away fast.
-Hope we get healthy over the next couple weeks for the stretch. Bunch of key players were forced out but the reserves filled in nicely. Great to see.

Outside of Henry's 60 yard run against Clemson, when was the last time we scored a first quarter TD against a Power 5 team? Tennessee?

Yep, all three games this year we've gotten off to terrible starts, particularly offensively.

Hell, even the defense looks shaky on the first drive or two typically.

We need to find a way to hit the ground running.

USC fans will tell you. Screens/Jet Sweeps are Kiffin's MO. They are awful.

Maybe I'm stupid but I felt the whole 4th quarter we could line up and run off tackle for 10-20 yards.

I think this is by design, especially against a team like Ole Miss. Throwing to the middle of the field is incredibly dangerous, and with a true freshman QB my guess is he doesn't want him making mistakes.

We threw the ball to the middle of the field ALL THE TIME last season on ins, slants and stops. I think this is a specific decision.

I hated the gameplan this week, but it's the same thing we did vs Michigan State and some other teams. Spread them out and then hit them in the gut. I don't understand it against a team who is really fast but can't cover - I think it probably a pretty poor plan that should have been scrapped after 2-3 possessions.

I guess I watched a different game than others. Bo looked good to me against Fold Miss. He had 2 big runs called back for holding. I don't remember him doing anything in the game that I thought was bad.
