It's not. Saban doesn't want or need to converse with recruits via texting or social media like twitter or instagram. Instead, he talks with them and their parents directly, and pretty frequently, via phone calls and zoom. It's really not an issue.

LOL. Saban was the first coach to use Skype to talk to a recruit. The staff is monitoring our players activity right now via Apple Watches. They have GPS tech inside of the pads that help coaches make the players more efficient. UA just hired the most forward thinking S&C duo in the country.

If you think Saban is going to lose out on the innovation front because he made some corny remark about email, then you don’t know him.

all of this. Saban isn't just flippantly overlooking the power of social media and virtual communication. To think so is asinine.

but proudly says he has never sent a text, email, tweet. I don't understand it.

Its because he is old school in his personality, and that just isn't going to change. Social media didn't pop up in 2019 or 2020. It clearly hasn't hurt our recruiting since hes been here.

The mandatory retirement age for Alabama State Employees is 70. The coach at Alabama is a State employee.

I would bet against the Sun coming up in the morning before I would bet against Saban being forced to retire at 70 if he still wants to coach.

But to pretend like it isn’t a potential issue is asinine as well. This thread reminded me of an article I read a while back on Clemson’s creative director Jonathan Gantt. I had to dig it up and pull some quotes from it...

quote:

HE HAD TO LEARN THE FIRST LESSON OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL: RECRUITING DRIVES THE BUS. "I think my original plan — if you could even call it that — it changed pretty drastically after the first six months on the job, after learning how important recruiting was," Gantt said. "After shifting, the strategy that we still have today is to utilize social media to reach recruits and to create content that answers the question: What’s it like to be a Clemson Tiger?"

quote:

"We go into so many high schools for the first time and the head coach will tell us, ‘Man, y’all put out the best videos, the best social media,’" said Jeff Scott, Clemson’s co-offensive coordinator. "When that’s your first meeting with a coach and he already knows that much about you, your staff and your program, that shows where it’s paying off. It absolutely makes a difference."

quote:

"I think that a lot of focus I had early on was talking to student-athletes [already at Clemson]," Gantt said. "Obviously, they’re a lot closer in age and perspective to the recruits that we’re going after, so being able to not just talk to them but actually look at their accounts and see the type of language and tone and ways that they communicated.

We have a pretty decent social media presence, but it mostly revolves around putting kids in the NFL and the “Built by Bama” mantra. That’s cool and all, but it wouldn’t hurt to expand our palate.

I do not know what if any special retirement adjustment there might be in place to allow Saban to coach beyond 70 but a "Manatory Retirement Age" for the State is easy to use against Saban.

Saban will coach as long as he wants

This guy has absolutely no clue what he's talking about re: mandatory retirement age and whom it applies to.

Saban may not be on social media all the time but as others have alluded to, I guarantee his staff and media dept are all over it with recruits . Assistants have more contact than head coaches anyway

I suppose that these threads are going to continue to keep breaking out until our recruiting numbers start heading north. Why panic, coach Saban isn't going to repeat the slow play stuff that we went through when we broke out the first early signing period.

Let's see your source since you're apparently an expert in this. Shouldn't be hard for you to find I assume since you have it on such quick recall.

If Saban is as good at recruiting during the pandemic as he is during regular circumstances then why is our recruiting class ranked 47th? Why do we not have one commit ranked in the top 60? That's not normal for us.

Negative recruiting and recent regular season losses. And it doesn't help that he's pushing 70.

That has nothing to do with it, we lost two games, not 8. Tennessee and UNC both have top 5 classes and lost way more than we did.

Had the same circumstances last year and it didn't hurt our recruiting at all.

We had a top 2 class, so it has been verified.

I’m confused as to how the circumstances have anything to do with it. Presumably he can still call (like he always has) and I’m sure he is.

He is one of the best, if not the best at face to face in person recruiting and he isn't able to do it right now.

The main form of communication going on between head coaches and recruits right now is texting, maybe you can call a guy and talk 10 minutes a day, or zoom with him once a week for 30 minutes, but I bet most of these coaches are texting players constantly.

The State of Alabama does have a "Mandatory Retirement Age" of 70 years old.

I am a retired state employee that was at one time deputy (and for a time acting) director of my agency's division that included HR. I can tell you with absolute certainty that there is no mandatory retirement age.

We HIRED some people over 70.

Judges have a max age when they can be elected but that's it.
