He said in April he didn't I don't think he is a liar. This article is from April 22nd.

quote:

The head coach finally got an email account earlier this month, saying it took quarantine to get him to break and finally create one of his own. Before he set it up, it was his wife who received all his messages. Known as Ms. Terry, his wife eventually got fed up with a full inbox and told him it's time to make his own. I mean if you can win multiple championships you should be able to sift through junk mail, right?

The email was a major step for Saban, but apparently he isn't using all of its functions. In an interview with the Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday, Saban said that when gets an email, he calls the person back rather than just hitting "reply." That must be a lot of phone calls.

Saban added that he has also never sent a text message in his life. Just imagine how overwhelmed he would be with all the emojis there are these days.

You think he was lying in the interview?

Do you honestly think a man with this many diverse business interests and responsibilities, in addition to his full-time job of being the most successful college football coach over the last 12 years, didn't know how to send an email or a text until three months ago?

It's possible. I've read where CEO's of billion dollar companies don't know how to use email. They have their secretaries print them out and respond to them for them.

Let's dissect this a bit.

The interview you're linking doesn't quote Saban. It DOES reference the interview with Maria Taylor from ESPN, in which he makes the statements you're referencing. Nitpicky, I know, but since we're splitting semantic hairs here, it pays to be accurate.

I can guarantee you Nick Saban has had multiple email accounts. If nothing else, the university would have assigned him one as an employee. Now, I grant you that he may have somebody else checking his university account for him most of the time, but be assured ... the man has had and used email.

What I would be willing to accept is that he's never had a PERSONAL email account. Wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn that. So, in March or April he might have finally gotten a personal email address.

Texting ... don't know or care. Not an issue.

Now, to the overall theme of the thread, in fact the question you posed as the title: Is Nick Saban's lack of tech savvy hurting our recruiting during the pandemic?

Recent results prove the fallacy inherent in the question. We stand a good chance of having the best recruiting class in the nation this year, as we have for every year since 2008. Every year some short-sighted worrywart questions Saban's recruiting, and every year he or she is proven wrong. When the worst we've finished in the recruiting rankings in the last 13 years is 7th, you're just looking for things to complain about at that point.

So, Saban can recruit. If you don't accept that, this entire discussion is pointless.

Now, to the implication itself: Nick Saban isn't tech-savvy. We can argue what that term actually means, but instead let's look at statements in the very interviews you've referenced for rebuttal.

Saban says he uses FaceTime and video chats to talk with recruits right now. From the interview with Maria Taylor: "For a couple hours in the afternoon and a couple hours at night, I do videos with recruits, phone calls with recruits. Whatever we can do to present to them on video that they would have seen when they came here to visit, which now they can't," Saban said.

We've already established he was using Skype years ago. And as has been widely publicized, we're using advanced metrics, cutting-edge technology and Apple watches to track workouts and results as part of our scientifically based strength and conditioning program. Who hired the guys running that program? Oh, that's right ... low-tech Nick Saban.

My assertion is Nick Saban uses every possible legal means at his disposal to give himself and his team an advantage ... and that includes using advanced technology in all aspects of the football program. For pete's sake, we've got LED lights and motorized leather recliners in the locker room.

If you think Saban is a Luddite who refuses to learn new things even though it would help him and his team, you're ignoring reality.

His lack of tech savvy just reeled in the #1 DT in the country.

When we end up with a top-3 recruiting class, what will they say?
We should be hearing from them about now.
