Yes! JD Phillips replaced Freddie to start the......1997 season? 1998? Then Zow took over at some point. Then the Tyler Watts show arrived.

98 was when jdp started and zow took over. It was my first year pulling for bama. Got in fresh off that 4-7 97 campaign

Yep. Phillips was the starter for the first two or three games. After that 42-6 debacle in Fayetteville against Arkansas, Zow took over the next week against Florida.

I get kinda pissed when people start ragging on Pennington. He was our 3rd string QB to start the year. Let me repeat that. 3rd string QB. He did his best. He was not very talented. He was tough and played as hard as he could for Alabama during dark times. I respect him.

And we would have won the game is Michael Vaughn hadn't fallen down after a wide open catch down the right sideline.

I think Travis McGriff caught the game winning TD for Florida.

Agree agree. He did all he could and played his arse off. Not his fault.

Not cool bringing this up summer. I had pushed that memory to the back of my mind. Now I feel victimized all over again.

I still think to this day if Shula wasnt a dumbass and took Brodie out and Ray Hudson had stayed healthy we would have been 10-0 going into the Iron Bowl. We were rolling until Brodie went down.

I remember one of my coworkers being so fricking confident we were going to be ok because "Marc Guillon had to be good to get a scholarship to Miami"

Brodie was legit. He was just as fragile as an eggshell.

Brodie could be walking down the sidewalk and tear his ACL.

Which is almost literally how he tore his ACL against Western Carolina.

But hot damn that dude could throw a football.

I remember my mom bringing home the Sports Illustrated with Brodie on the front with the words "Bama's Back", and I thought "Oh, so this is how it feels to be a BCS contender. I'm sure losing Prothro won't be that big of a deal!"

Brandon Avalos?

Probably the only time I've said, "I can throw better than that" and it be an indisputable fact.

I truly hated Avalos but also felt really bad for him. Weird place to be when you love Bama.

I don’t think it’s off base to say that we could’ve been undefeated going into the Auburn game. We could barely throw the ball and we were a play or two from winning every game up to that point.

Funny to think how things were back then. I remember listening to some recruiting radio show when I was in junior high and they were saying Tyler Watts had the potential to be the best QB in Alabama history. Everyone all about Jimmy Barnes because he was a coach’s son. Great times.

Yeah, it's not fair to include him in the discussion of shitty Bama quarterbacks. That should be for people who were supposed to start and sucked.

Yep, I was there for that one. That was a tight game 16-10 I think. God, the loss to MSU a few weeks later was awful.

I getting sick thinking back to what I thought was "good". We were some hopeless fricks back then.

Anyone else think Mike Ford was going to save the day for us at Running back? Each year that he couldn't qualify was like a dagger. That guy wouldn't even crack to top five on any Bama team from the last decade.
