If you’re a Gump, don’t ever forget what that Fat Worm and Roy Kramer tried to do. Not ever

It’s mainly the agents who are screwing things up. They are treating College players like they would professional athletes.
They are peddling players to different universities and encouraging them to go with the highest bidder, everything else be damned. Easy to sway young minds and their greedy handlers.

I have the perspective that the ultimate fault here is college administrators failing to recognize the way the wind was blowing a decade ago. They dug in hoping to keep their clutch cheap labor system in the guise of amateurism. Clearly they were going to lose, they did, and they got haphazard rationalization of the labor relationship handed to them by the courts.

We better hope that the House settlement is the prescription for all the mess created by NIL getting handed to college football by lawyers and judges rather than college administrators recognizing reality a decade ago and hashing it out themselves. I have my doubts because this is, once again, being hashed out in the judicial system rather than amongst the college administrators alone.

This. I’m glad they told Nico to kick rocks, but let’s not forget they had their state representatives threatening legal action when the NCAA was investigating the pay for play with Nico I am a leaver.

Those threats basically ended any hope of NIL regulation without federal legislation.

Entitled brats thinking they deserve millions to play college football.

Well, that’s exactly what they’re getting because they do deserve it… at least from an entertainment standpoint. And that’s what college football is: entertainment.

It isn’t just the brand that brings in the cash. It is also having highly talented players that fans can follow on their way to the NFL.

100,000 people in a stadium and millions watching on TV don’t want to see a scrawny accounting major who runs a 4.9 40 catch a jailbreak screen. They want to see someone who will be drafted in the first round by the Cowboys or Steelers in six months catch it.

The game up there in 2022 will forever stick in my craw, too. Our team was literally robbed in the most obviously rigged football game that I’ve seen.

Yes, Intercepted, runs down the sideline, gets tackled out of bounds, officials runs from the other side of the field that was totally out of his call range and throws the flag.

See, I completely disagree with this for college football, and especially in the SEC. Football is so culturally engrained that people show up to see Alabama, not the athletes. I mean, Texas has a similar culture around high school where we're talking about literal, random boys that just so happen to be in the district (for the most part).

This is what every athlete wants to believe but it just isn’t true.

Ryan Williams cannot transfer to Alabama A&M and expect to receive the same level of exposure or demand. Nico can gladly transfer to Tennessee Tech, and me and the other 20 people who come to the games will love watching him, but his NIL funds from Goodys ain’t flowing in at the same rate as they are from the collective in Knoxville.

The athletes deserve a cut of the revenue but less than 1% can actually make a claim to move the needle on creating actual value for their school. It is generally the school creating the value for 99% of the players.

College football and basketball players are definitely professionals and should be treated that way. The evolution that created the professional college athlete is interesting. Zealots that would do unreasonable, or almost anything, to win are at the root of the evolution.

I recall a main Tenn booster flying this kid into Tennessee on his private jet. I also recall the University of Tennessee and the Tennessee legislature posturing and fighting against the NCAA to pay this kid and make the NCAA like it. No, I don’t have any pity for the University of Tennessee. They didn’t create the current NIL situation, but they did create this Nico situation.

Exactly. They got themselves into this position in the first place. I remember when Saban and Alabama were recruiting Nico. We backed off because of the NIL deals he was requesting. People who are praising Heupel need to step back and look at the situation from a macro perspective. Nico took them to the cleaners and he really did very little of note as their starter. But, he was the best they had on their roster. Now, they have no experienced options. They will have to find a competent replacement in the portal.

They need to sign binding contracts like NFL players do and the portal should be severely restricted...if we're going to stay in this NIL world.

This shite keeps up I'm gonna spend my Saturdays in the Fall watching professional bowling.

It definitely feels dirty now. I don't want to encourage/fund a culture that celebrates this.
