said it before, i’ll say it again, eli gold was an incompetent football announcer. seems like a nice guy but really bad at the technical basics of calling a football game on the radio. still has never told us what yard line they’re on.

this is a massive W.

This is such a mature, intelligent post for this website’s standard.

It was beyond time to end the Eli show. Saban didn't like him either. He never knew what the frick was going on in the game. As a fan listening to the game on the radio, his bloviating and pontificating were what we heard. He was beyond bad. Truth on the wall was at the DeBoer introductory pressor. No Eli for a good reason.

Eli was never awesome. He called George Teague's strip of Lamar Thomas a fumble, botching one of the most iconic plays in Bama football history...and that was 31 years ago. He's never been good.

His call on 4th and 31 was just depressing. No emotion because he didn’t have the energy. He ruined one of the biggest plays in Alabama football history

Two of the biggest.

Eli should have stuck with hockey. That's what brought him to Birmingham in the late seventies, and he was good at it.

I don’t think he was incompetent at all, he just became familiar and like I said, Alabama fans are so tradition bound when it comes to their radio announcers that they have conniptions if someone moves their cheese. I’ll get flamed but I absolutely believe Paul Kennedy was a vast improvement over John Forney at least how Forney was toward the end, but Forney just lived so large in people’s memories and people associated him with Coach Bryant plus it was part of Perkins’ general housecleaning that got everybody so hot and bothered.

Personally, I liked him and thought he did a good job overall. Kind of sad how some on here are dogging him. I wish him well.

So he’s supposed to just stay in place because he is old?

The only reason he got to stay as long as he did was because he is old.

He should be retained because he is a loyal, dedicated, hardworking, passionate, enthusiastic person/employee/fan who is deserving of being known as the voice of Alabama football. No one is denying he hasn’t been 100% lately but Good Lord, the man had cancer. He survived and was able to come back to the booth to do what he loves. He worked hard and did what he needed to do to make it back. I, for one, am glad he did. I just think they should have worked with him to come up with a better resolution than to push him out this way. I am a firm believer in you reap what you sow, and that Karma always comes back to you. Be careful how you treat people. What you do to others has a funny way of coming back on you. Peace out.

Really lousy way to treat an icon. It would have been VERY EASY to ease him out after 2024 without firing him just months after a major health crisis.

CTSN/UA has been more than accommodating. Eli doesn’t have some god given right to retain the job forever. He’d gotten bad at it and even people that worked with him said he wasn’t giving it 100% and was difficult to work with….that was pre-cancer.

His contract was up this year. He could’ve read the room and called his own shot. He didn’t. That’s not UA’s fault.

Down vote me all you want, but there’s a better way to go about removing the man who spent 35 years in the broadcast booth. No one is denying he’s slipped, no one is denying it was time for him to leave, but after giving his blood, sweat, and tears to The University of Alabama for nearly four decades, they should have went about this transition with a little more tact.

Forney was a shadow of his old self at the end. Having said that, I thought Paul Kennedy sucked arse as an Alabama announcer. He sounded just as delighted when the opponent made a big play as when Alabama did. He didn't have to be an Auburn level homer, but sometimes it was hard to tell which team he was announcer for.

I'll never forget meeting Eli at a gas station with my dad and when asked about the upcoming season, he stated that it was NASCAR time and he doesn't even think about football. Nice

For years, Eli did commercials for Salvatore’s Italian Restaurant in Bham. Eventually, Eli opened his own Italian restaurant nearby that competed with them. Salvatore’s pulled those old commercials out and played them everywhere. Soon after, Eli’s restaurant went out of business.

Hat tip to Salvatore’s for the the savvy business move.

More bullshat and disloyalty from UA.
I sure hope Deboer is a rock star and wins like crazy.
If not, the University might start reaping the “rewards” of 30+ years of treating the average fan like garbage…..

Exactly, the amount of disrespectful Alabama fans celebrating one of the most iconic voices of Alabama football history being forced out is disgusting. However, it's incredibly indicative of our society writ large now.

Eli Gold was an iconic voice for CTSN, TNN, and MRN just to name a few. His calls of the 1999 Florida game in Gainesville with Kenny, the Penn State block in 1989, Rocky Block in 2009, the Drake return against Clemson, his Talladega race calls, Daytona race calls, all of these made him a radio legend with an iconic and unique voice. It's shameful and disgusting to see people on this here board celebrate the firing of a legend and a man's voice that has transcended Alabama football. Alabama is the bad guy here, and they deserved to be booed. Eli Gold was a hell of a lot more than just the "Voice of Alabama Football."
