So he’s supposed to just stay in place because he is old?

The only reason he got to stay as long as he did was because he is old.

Eh, probably time for him to hang up his hat regardless.

Hell, I remember listening to him with my dad on opening day of dove season. I was 10 I think?

I'm 45 now.

ETA: Yup, he started in 1988.

Very, very few people in sports get to call their own shot out simply because very few know when it's time to call it quits. For every Saban that retires before the bottom falls out there are a dozen or more Bobby Bowdens out there that simply won't hang it up. It's been clear for a while Eli was going to be the latter so I do not blame the University of simply deciding not to renew his contract.

Really lousy way to treat an icon. It would have been VERY EASY to ease him out after 2024 without firing him just months after a major health crisis.

More bullshat and disloyalty from UA.
I sure hope Deboer is a rock star and wins like crazy.
If not, the University might start reaping the “rewards” of 30+ years of treating the average fan like garbage…..

Totally agree. Now when listening to the radio we'll know what the hell is going on.

They "eased" him out after 2023. Eli would have stuck around with his mediocre calls for another 5 years had UA not forced him out today.

Eli is one of the worst on the radio. If he was your only source of information you would have no idea what is going on

Would have been even easier to put him out in 2016 like MRN did because of his embarrassing actions. He was with NASCAR for longer than he was at UA.

UA tried to give him an easy out, but the bitter old f$ck decided to go public to embarrass the school and try to win sympathy. Screw him and I hope that the reason he left MRN get revealed publicly.

Seems like it would have also been VERY EASY to ease him out after 2023 Oh wait, we just did.

I have not read the full quote or story, but maybe Eli is just saying he’s not planning to retire from broadcasting. Has he been doing nascar and his other stuff since the diagnosis. Or just Bama of late?

Our fan base is so locked into tradition on stuff like this. They reacted the same way when John Forney was forced out in 1982.

Flame away, but Forney needed to be sent to the house then and Eli needs to go to the house now.

We are burying my mother this weekend. She worked full time at a job that, sadly, was her reason for living until she was 75 years old, when she was forced out by her employer of more than 50 years because she was not capable of doing the job anymore and the employer had shown all the loyalty it could show to her without it adversely affecting their operation.

She spent her remaining decade or so of life pining away for that job and saying that if she could only get well, she could go back to work, not listening to her family’s admonitions that the only cure for her ailment was six feet of dirt.

It’s easy to say someone should be given the chance to go out on their own terms. Some people just can’t go out without a push. Trust me, I’ve lived it.

Uh - Spoiler: the University IS the bad guy.
And It’s a effing RADIO CALL! It’s not open heart surgery or being President. So what if he’s Not the world’s sharpest anymore?

And When’s the last time ANY of us seriously had to rely ONLY on the radio call with no video??? Unless you are a cheapskate, it was probably 2007.

The man is an icon. He could have gotten one healthy year.

But our fans today are just frontrunners. We are a fan base of “Rickey Bobby’s “ in Crimson. :-(

He hasn’t done NASCAR in a long time. It’s probably been a decade or so since I can remember him working a race for the Motor Racing Network. Even then, I think it was just fill-in work.

And that’s probably why you don’t realize that Eli, while a legend, has lost several steps as a play-by-play guy.

This is such a mature, intelligent post for this website’s standard.

The guys who truly deserve to go out “when they’re ready” also know when it’s time, even if they aren’t “ready,” if you know what I mean.

How long does the university give him for the “one healthy” year? He only wanted to do home games again for the upcoming season.

Thank you.

I have much respect for Eli but time marches on.

Al Michaels needs to go to the house, he was atrocious this year, as was Brent Musberger toward the end.
