9-3 is far from a total disaster
9-3 ain’t a total disaster but 9-3 with a loss to an in-state rival is not a good season. Spoiled or not, that’s the reality. If a coach wants kudos for 9-3 seasons, they don’t need to be coaching at programs like Alabama. Getting a contract extension after 2 9-3 regular seasons with a top 10 roster is laughable but not unlikely given how it’s all Monopoly money to everyone involved but the agents.

Exactly. Diego wants to let him walk if he doesn't deserve an extension/raise.
Okay, so who are you bringing in to replace him that's as good or better?
There really aren't any good options, so I think we have to give him a raise/extension if the alternative is him walking away. Yes, it sucks that that's the current state of CFB, but what's the alternative if you don't play the game?
I am mostly speaking from a place of ethics or idealism. I accept that my opinion does not survive contact with reality. Hell, even in my field it is not uncommon for someone with a job offer to get an immediate counter when they tender their notice of resignation. Irrespective of whether they're worth the raise or not, it is almost always cheaper to keep a trained highly-skilled employee than source and train a new one.
That is basically the argument on why DeBoer would very likely be given a contract extension and more guaranteed money regardless if he's actually earned it by performance. It is cheaper to keep our coach right now than replace him. I'd argue that is possibly short-sighted in this case but I can at least draw a similar parallel to general business operations. The difference is that if you give an employee a raise to retain them, they take it, but perform poorly afterwards the vast majority of employees in the US are at-will employees who can be terminated without contractual payment obligations.
That is the real issue here. Furthermore, Byrne got to ask important people for commitments to fund these new contracts through the CTF, etc. He's going to have a tough sell if DeBoer loses this upcoming Iron Bowl and misses the playoffs again with a roster all these monied donors think they've spent enough on to reach the playoffs at a minimum.

This entire thread is based on nothing more than a random dude's ranking candidates that Penn State would like to hire. Marcus Freeman is on the list too. The list is a joke and is unrealistic.
All of the teeth-gnashing is going to be a moot when we beat Auburn and then beat A&M and win the SEC.

Bama finishing 9-3 would be a huge disappointment. Losing to a bad Auburn team with a chance to go to the playoffs would be embarrassing. You can't miss a 12 team playoff two years in a row at Alabama. They wouldn't fire Deboer over that, but it would show that he's not going to work and we would have to wait around for it all to play out.

Why do people do this to themselves? Clowns like the guy on X looks dumb as shite when it doesn’t happen and the fans that take it and run with it believing it to be true. Well, you look even dumber if that is truly possible.

They're top 30-35 in most metric systems and top 25 in several.
They have the 13th most talented roster in the country.
They've only lost 1 game by more than 7pts (UGA)
While I agree its a season killer if we lose to them, they're far from "bad"

The guy that strarted all of this says if Deboer loses to Auburn he is more likely to go to Penn State. Why would Penn State want a coach that lost in the pressure cooker of Alabama? I'd think they'd want him more if he wins out the year. We aren't firing him this year so he'd have to walk on his own.
Also, Kiffin will never be the head coach at Alabama.

They're 14th in the SEC. They may be dangerous, but they are still bad.

If that is remotely true, and I don’t think it is, we will know from Kiffins decision. If goes ahead and takes a new job or stays it means the Alabama job isn’t available

You’ve got BOL basically saying “no one is saying this, anywhere, connected to the program”
Somehow people will still turn this odd hypothetical from a new college grad into an actual thread though

All I saw was Penn State was interested. Didn’t see anything about mutual feelings.
Maybe I should make a Twitter post to let the world know I'm interested in fricking Scarlet Johansen.
