An all-state type of season for Lee-Montgomery standout Henry Ruggs III came to a premature end when the Generals were forced to forfeit wins due to the use of an ineligible player.
Instead of getting ready to face Class 7A No. 1 McGill-Toolen in the first round of the playoffs, Lee's record turned from 6-3 to 0-9.
"It's a hard pill to swallow knowing that all the hard work we put in for the season is gone now," Ruggs said. "We can't do anything about it. We've just got to go on with it."
Ruggs had a monster season. He caught 38 passes for 639 yards and nine touchdowns. He rushed 36 times for 446 yards and seven scores. He had 352 kickoff return yards and a touchdown and, forced into quarterback duty late in the year because of injuries, he hit 11 of 23 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns.
Add that up and it's 1,271 offensive yards and 19 touchdowns to go with the special teams production.
Lee won six straight to open the season before losses to Auburn, Central-Phenix City and Enterprise in a tough Class 7A, Region 2, but the Generals were a force to be reckoned with.
"Just the bond I built with my team, hanging out all the time, going out with them and doing different things and being with them most of the day every day," Ruggs said when asked what stood out most.
?The 6-foot, 173-pound Ruggs emerged as an elite four-star recruit after his junior season. He's also a standout basketball player for the Generals and said he's doing workouts to keep his weight up so he doesn't lose any during the hoops season.
He has a top five of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Penn State with no leader. Ruggs has been to Alabama, Auburn and Florida State this season and visited Penn State over the summer and Florida during spring.
"Now, it speeds the process up," Ruggs said. "I've got more time to focus on recruiting and look at different things and look deeper into colleges."
Ruggs saw Alabama beat Texas A&M over the weekend.
"It was a good visit," he said. "I always have a good time in Tuscaloosa. It's not really too much different than any other time. The game's always a packed crowd and it's a great, homely environment."
He's been to two Auburn games this season against Arkansas State and LSU.
"It's interesting seeing how they bounce back from the two losses earlier in the season and seeing how they're coming together as a team," Ruggs said. "They've got a lot of young talent on offense just working together trying to get everything right with the quarterback position."
Ruggs said he hopes to take official visits to his top five schools, getting in two during the season and three in January.
He said he's looking at either the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa or Florida State's home game against Florida. Both games are on Nov. 26 and he's not sure if a trip on that date would be an official visit or not.
He said a commitment could come "at any time, you never know," and shared what he's looking for in a school.
"Outside of football, of course academics is the first thing," Ruggs said. "You've got to have a relationship with, not only the coaches and staff, but the players because you're around them the most and it's all about where you feel the most comfortable."

I don't understand why they don't. Seems to me if the players is good enough to be rated a 4 or 5* it should not really matter if he's out of HS or a JUCO recruit.
Would he be a 4* or 5* if a HS senior? He's rated as the #1 CB, surely hats at least 4*material, most #1 position players are 5*s
It hurts our recruiting average and looking at Ohio State's class it's gonna be really hard to beat them for the #1 class this year.

Who cares, this isnt a video game he will be the same player no matter how he is rated by sites. Championships are won on the field, who is #1 in recruiting is extremely subjective, not important, and only 1 part of turning that class into part of a team that can win a real championship.

Well no shite, thanks for clearing that up for me. And hear I was all this time thinking Saban was just the greatest NCAA Xbox gamer of all times.

fricking A, really? Are you sure? Well thats changes everything.

Damn, you're on a roll today, dropping all kinds of knowledge bombs.
Whether you want to believe it or not, the class ranking matter to recruits, public perception has a huge effect on these great players and where they end up signing. If you don't think that Bama's 6 straight #1 classes had an effect then you're out of touch with reality.
Every players ranking matters and if JUCO players aren't ranked according to their talents then that's not fair and doesn't give an accurate overall ranking.
Of course these players still have to perform and their ranking doesn't matter in that regards.
Have Ohio State win the mythical recruiting championship few years in a row and see what the media narrative turns to, which will hurt future classes. Bama will be on the downslide, Saban is slipping, times are changing, and etc.
Thanks for the lesson though.

Yea they have already tried that and then Saban won another championship. Get your head out of your arse chicken little.

I'm pretty sure that was sarcasm.

Good thing Saban passed on Kongbo, looks like he may have left Tennessee.

Are prep schools still a thing or are there new rules that send guys to juco instead?

With Gary Johnson not making it in, do any of the LBs we currently have committed project as inside backers?
Posted on 10/31/16 at 2:29 pm to UAtide11
I think that Benton is a guy that we'd like to have play inside.

According to the article, Johnson could retake algebra and qualify to play in the SEC but he doesn't want to delay his graduation from May to June. 1 month? Really?

Oh NOES!
Wait, that's exactly what was being said in 2013 & 2014.
How's that working out for the folks making those predictions?

It's not working out, but that doesn't mean it won't be said in the future and even then it won't be true but the media, rivals fans and etc are full of Bama fatigue and will run with it to change the perception, force a narrative and etc. That can hurt recruiting.
But back to the original question in my post that started BPMs period early this month. why is it that JUCO players are rated lower than a HS player of the same ability?
If the player is 4 or 5* material it shouldn't matter. So what gives with that?

BRADENTON, Fla. — Surprised, confused and out of nowhere were the popular takes from Dylan Moses’ teammates at IMG Academy after the linebacker committed to Alabama on Oct. 2.
Perhaps that’s why many believe the story is far from over as it pertains to Moses’ recruitment.
Moses, a 5-star linebacker and the No. 4 overall recruit in the 2017 class, was considered by most recruiting experts to be on the road back to his hometown of Baton Rouge when he committed later this year. Alabama, Ohio State and even Houston were expected to be in the mix, but LSU was the quiet frontrunner late in the spring and throughout the summer.
LSU parted ways with 12-year head coach Les Miles after the team’s last-second loss on the road at Auburn. Miles was fired when he returned to Baton Rouge that Sunday, and seven days later Moses opted to put a pin in his recruitment in Nick Saban’s house.
He is an Alabama commit.
That decision took LSU and Alabama fans by surprise — his teammates, too.
LSU wide receiver commit Jhamon Ausbon found out like everyone else — through social media — which was a head scratcher since he had a different understanding of Moses’ plans.
“I was confused because this was so out of the blue,” Ausbon told SEC Country. “Nowadays, guys commit using edits and all of that, so this came out of nowhere. We had talked about certain things, but something happened that he couldn’t be at that program (LSU). So, why wait? I can see him there, but it still surprised me.”
Something happened for sure.
Ausbon, of course, was referring to the departure of Miles, which completely altered the direction of Moses’ recruitment.
Keep in mind Miles was the first to offer Moses a scholarship when he was just an eighth-grader at LSU’s prospect camp. That offer carried significant weight because the 14-year-old Moses grew up in Baton Rouge and was set to attend high school at University Lab, which sits on the foot of the LSU campus.
Moses committed to Miles and the Tigers in September, 2013, only to re-open his recruitment 11 months later. When Miles was on the hot seat last November, he sent SEC Country a lengthy text in support of LSU’s then-head coach.
Moses’ relationship with Miles is well-documented, but the 5-star athlete made the decision to transfer to IMG Academy in January for his senior season. A source close to the situation said Moses wanted distance from his hometown because of the pressure he was receiving in Baton Rouge to attend LSU.
Even in Bradenton, Moses gravitated toward LSU.
Asa Martin, a Class of 2018 4-star running back, landed an offer from LSU on Sept. 9. Not surprisingly, Moses began to recruit Martin to LSU.
“I was real surprised,” Martin said of Moses’ pledge to Alabama. “I thought he was going to LSU. He was talking to me about going there and I was talking to him about going there. I thought he was real solid with LSU.
“I think it’s still up in the air. It’s home, and there’s nothing better than that. No matter what colleges or anything, it’s home, so I don’t think it’s over yet.”
National Signing Day is three months away, but Moses plans to enroll early.
That was the basis of Corey Raymond’s and Dameyune Craig’s visit to IMG Academy on Oct. 24. Raymond, LSU’s defensive backs coach and Florida area recruiter, also is Moses’ uncle. Craig was minted as the team’s recruiting coordinator when Ed Orgeron became the interim head coach.
Raymond and Craig tasked Ausbon and fellow 4-star LSU commit Grant Delpit with recruiting Moses back to the Tigers. That’ a daunting responsibility since the 5-star linebacker has played most of his decision-making close to the vest.
“I was so surprised. When I got off the plane, I saw Dylan committed to Alabama and I was like, ‘Damn, man,'” Delpit recalled. “Dylan is a quiet guy. He definitely loves Alabama, so trying to flip him to come to LSU — it’s on everyone. One of the reasons is he’s been around LSU so long, but he’s going to go wherever he wants to go and I respect that.”
“Dylan is kind of hard because he’s so quiet,” Ausbon added. “You’d think he talks a lot, but he’s so quiet, so you never know what he’s thinking. He’s committed to ‘Bama and it’s so hard to flip because what could you say? But we’ll see. It’s not over.”
With Delpit and Ausbon leading the charge, hope remains the Tigers can land their top target in 2017. Other linebacker options Jacob Phillips and Will Ignont committed elsewhere — to Oklahoma and Tennessee, respectively. LSU continues holding a spot in its class in case it can change Moses’ mind.
Like Moses, Delpit and Ausbon hail from Louisiana and that serves as the conversation starter and possibly the closer as they recruit their IMG teammate to join them at LSU. Moses visited LSU — out of the blue — for the Southern Miss game to gauge how the program was moving under Orgeron’s direction.
Another small step in the Tigers’ favor.
No one is surrendering hope that Moses returns home at the end of this story.
“I just play the home play. We all come from the area, so it’s not hard,” Ausbon said. “I told him that, ‘You know where home is,’ and he said, ‘I know.’ We talked about committing at the Under Armour Game in a certain way, but everyone has their own reasons. … He wanted to see the team and coach O leading the team in person. He loves coach O, so …”

G Johnson was looking for any reason anyway. He wasn't going to be in this class. Glad he's staying out of the SEC.

That goes back to what the star system was supposed to relate to way back when it started.
5* - top 32 players (first round draft choices) Capable of starting as a true freshamn
4* capable of starting as a soph or redshirt freshman
3* capable of starting as a Jr or redshirt soph
A JuCo kid cannot start until their Jr season (or Soph if they are able to get 3 years because of a redshirt year from JuCo). A JuCo 4* is valued much like a HS 5* would be.

Well, with OM's NCAA issues, I'm hearing that we feel extremely confident on Akers if Najee were to go to Michigan.
The feeling around the program is that the chances of us not signing one or the other are VERY VERY low.
Unless OM convinces them that the NCAA thing isn't happening, Akers will be going to Bama or L5U, most likely.
This is getting into the crazy season (if all year isn't the crazy season these days) for recruiting. Very fluid stuff.
While some of us have different views on Najee/Akers and I would certainly prefer Najee, as I feel like he's a once-every-few-years talent, I'll say one thing for Akers. He's the BEST POSSIBLE fallback option we could imagine. Rarely is a #2 RB prospect in the country as good. They both look like they'll be NFL guys.
Of course, it's recruiting. 17-18 year olds. Things happening behind the scenes. Things could all change 10 times wildly between now and Singing Day.
