Intriguing job. Great school with gobs of football talent in state. Honestly, you could field a good team with nothing but California kids.
I've heard Glenn Schumann's name bandied about as a possibility for the MSU job but UCLA would be a better gig. Not sure if they (UCLA) would take a chance on a DC though.

Seems like more people would have done it over the years. They've had some solid to good seasons, but are overall just a mediocre program. What you say about the school and in-state talent is correct, but if the administration there is not committed to winning big (they aren't), then you're going to get what you've gotten. I expect them to become a cellar dweller in the Big Ten.
It's debatable to me about which is the better job between that and Miss State.

Is it though? They have been mostly irrelevant since the 80s, the Rose Bowl might as well be in a different state it's so far from their campus, and L.A. in general is just not a football city. Now they're set to join a conference no one out there cares about that will require them to engage in multiple cross-country trips to play in the cold and snow, with a TV deal that is going to end up requiring them to occasionally play at 9am local time. I would say it's a horrible job. Worse than any in the SEC besides Vandy.

If Dante Moore gets in the portal a bunch of top teams will be after him. LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc.

Does UCLA think they deserve better results than they are getting?

Does UCLA have fans? The administration doesn't really seem bought in to winning, so I'd think they'd be good with what Kelly has done.

Maybe, but at UCLA you are number 2 to USC in a city that already doesn’t care that much about football. Soon UCLA will have to do a bunch of cross country traveling for Big Ten games, as well. I think I would rather be at MSU as a first time head coach.

I think they have a decent sized fanbase that’s very casual. They are never gonna be NIL ballers and Kelly is a guy that hates recruiting but finds his guys and puts out competitive teams
Feels like a good match

I don't know about the inner workings of UCLA athletics but if their facilities are second rate and they haven't embraced NIL, those are major impediments to winning big. I would think that a good coach would insist on UCLA upgrading their overall funding before they accepted the job.
UCLA has the money. Whether or not they are willing to upgrade, that remains to be seen. IF they would do that, there's no reason for UCLA not be a consistently good team with a good coach.

I honestly feel like UCLA is kind of a high-brow organization that doesn't really want to "lower itself" to get involved in the NIL era, pouring money into athletics facilities, etc. That might not be the case but that's the sense I've always gotten.

Until West Coast schools learn to keep the liberal academic side out of sports, a job at UCLA is nowhere near appealing.

If i was going to pick a western school to cheer for, it would be ucla, or Oregon St. Probably Oregon St. Got a thing for beavers.

I don’t know. Being a “doesn’t like recruiting” guy is a death sentence in the SEC West (which I guess is not a division anymore but you get my point)

I’d agree that it is intriguing and it does have some potential, but one problem not mentioned is that it basically ranks behind Men’s Basketball, Women’s softball and likely even their own water polo and swimming and diving programs when it comes to fan interest.

Terry Donahue was probably the last head coach that ever had any success there.
Bob Toledo lasted a few yrs after that. Beat us back to back 00-01. Dashawn Foster ran all over Bama’s arse that first game, we was ranked #3 at the time.
