Can we all chill on expectation levels and "he's going to do this" or "he's going to do that" for Oats. He was a mid-major hire. Mid-major hires almost ALL have impeccable resumes, and we know that a small percentage of them end up turning out to be fantastic coaches. I think we can all agree that the more we read and watch the more we like the guy's style, personality and basketball philosophy. But a lot of those same things have been said about 100 mid-major coaches before him who ended up averaging 17-15 seasons and flaming out.

So - let's let him recruit a full class, coach a full season, install his system, etc and then start making grand predictions and bold statements. Until then, can we all just say we like what we see but we know it's very much unpredictable and who knows?

No. Final Four next year.

But, I understand what you're saying. I can be enthusiastic and rational at the same time. But, some of the FOG's will get on board and think big things are definitely coming soon. Then, they'll be the first ones calling for Nate's head next December and wanting to run off all the players.

Exactly. I'll be ecstatic with a winning record and a NIT bid next season. That would be a hell of a coaching job, but I just don't think he'll be able to do that in his first season

I don’t expect to be in the tourney next year unless we keep Kira and Petty and add Watford.

My hopes for next year are the occasional upset and for the analytics to show some promise

This is 100% going to happen the first time we lose to a very good mid-major team.

With us being so close the past couple of years it will be difficult to see another down year. And we’re certainly in a better place than Auburn was when Bruce Pearl got there, but his first two seasons at Auburn he went 26-40. It takes time unfortunately.

We are going to be a markedly improved team next year. If we keep our talent and add some, we will be good. With a quality coach, we will see much better play. Effort alone will give us 2 or three more wins.

I hope so - I do think we have to understand that we are going to be completely changing the way we play the game. Our offensive strategy is going to be a total overhaul from everything most of these kids have done in college.

It could take some time for them to get comfortable and play fast in that system. It'd be great if it clicked quickly, but it could take a full season.

Sadly FOGs are going to FOG if he struggles some next year. I'm cautiously optimistic though. The sustained success at Buffalo is promising.

My favorite post was on another Bama board---about 2 minutes after the announcement he was saying Oats is going to make Alabama a consistent Sweet 16 participant.

Yeah, I like that he has a very gritty, no bullshite attitude about basketball, and I like that his offense is pretty forward thinking, but he's a mid-major coach with a background coaching high school. If he transitions well to the realities of recruiting to a P-6 program along with the grind of the conference schedule then it's an A+ hire. If he doesn't then he's just another mid-major coach who washed out after getting a shot at a big job. In any event, he deserves a couple of years before we start to form any kind of strong opinions about his coaching. We are about to go from Avery's dated, NBA hero ball offense to a motion offense. There's going to be a ton of growing pains unless all of our players happen to grasp the new concepts really quickly. Because if one of them fricks up and isn't moving to where he is supposed to the whole thing falls apart. Getting an entire roster on the same page takes time. Especially when you're having to teach a frick ton of new concepts to them.

Sure, we can pump the brakes on Sweet Sixteen and Final Four talk. But if he makes the NCAA tournament just once in the next 4 years, that would be par for the course and we would have lost nothing.

It's not exactly a tall mountain to claim.

Next year, hell … I expect us to be in the Final Four THIS year.

So what if we're not currently in the tournament? If Oats is any kind of coach, he can get us there NOW.

Otherwise, he's a bust.

Well if Oats can somehow not only convince the NCAA to just let us in the tournament this weekend, and then reel off a couple of wins to reach this year’s Final 4, then I think we should probably go ahead and extend him and give him a raise.
