I don't think you know what head cases mean

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Alabama had THREE consecutive four year starters at punter. That dates back to 2006. We were spoiled at punter well beyond JK Scott. PJ Fitzgerald and Cody Mandell had brief stints in the NFL too.

I watched him in the last scrimmage before the season started and he struck the ball considerably better than now. He did have one shank when punting out of the end zone with Saban standing about 2 feet away from him.

Right now, his drops are all over the place!! This leads to not striking the ball cleanly. Add to that that when he is striking it, it is at a different point in his leg swing each time. The whipping action in his leg is maxed out or hasn't reached full potential at contact. Think of one of those old golf games on some game console. If you hit the button too soon, you slice, hit it too late, you hook. Similar concept here.

Yep, both PJ and Cody were extremely good punters. Even before that we had Lane Bearden who was good.

Our punter has been solid for as long as our place kicker has been crap.

Time to give Mack Wilson a crack at it

quote:

"When he hits a good ball on a punt, he can compete with probably any punter in the country," Alabama’s starting punter JK Scott said of Wilson. "He can smoke a ball. He’s not as consistent, but he can really hammer it."

Does confidence increase leg strength or something?

Punting is 90% about the drop, and is very akin to a golf swing. Confidence and muscle memory is key.

Let's just let the kid develop. He's our punter this year. Support him as a proper fan should and hope he develops.

Not @ Ystar specifically, but to everyone:

I wonder if any of you who criticize him so thoroughly have ever been in a slump, or made a mistake, or performed "less than" for a period of time... Naw, ya'll were obviously always great. Just really, really great. All the time. And no one ever needed to be patient with you. Of course not. Cause you were always great. Always.

Mack Wilson was the back-up punter last year. Is he still the back-up?

IMO this hits at the root of his problem. Right now he needs confidence and consistency - just go out, relax and kick it. Once you get that down then you can work on the fancier stuff.

Holy shite...where did you acquire this knowledge? We need to somehow get Saban this info right away. He needs to know that the punter just needs to relax and kick it.

I mean, I hear you on that 118 ranking, but he hasn't had very many opportunities to get in game experience.

118 ranking

88th in net punting, so it could be worse. At least nobody has any return yards on us.

Just looked at the stats and Boise State is averaging 22 yards net.

Saban explains Alabama's roll-out punts, talks Aussie punters (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Against Texas A&M, Alabama freshman punter Skyler DeLong rolled out to his right during his six punts this past weekend. A caller asked Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban about rugby-style punts during his call-in radio show Thursday evening, and Saban explained why DeLong’s drop was similar to the style many punters across the college football landscape choose to use.

“I think one of the reasons is it’s easy to protect, No. 1, because you’re rolling out basically when you punt,” Saban said. “It’s almost like if you’re blitzing the quarterback and he can roll out, if he gets by one guy, you have no pressure. Well, it’s a similar thing. The rugby punt is very difficult to field. You get a lot of roll. We don’t really want to rugby punt, aight. So, for those of you out there that think because we’ve rolled with our punter a few times -- we’re trying to get him to develop confidence into being able to punt.

“He’s a freshman. He punts very well in practice. We get in the game, he gets nervous and he’s moving the wall around and drops the ball bad, inside, outside. So, that’s a matter of confidence, so we’re trying to find a style that fits him. We don’t need to rugby punt. We can kick it right, we can kick it left, we can kick it down the middle. We have coverage patterns to do whatever he can do. He’s done a pretty job of Aussie kicking when we do the (end-over-end stuff). And we’ve downed some balls inside the 10-yard line.

“But his consistency is something that we need to work on. We tried the rugby style just trying to get him to be able to develop confidence in doing that, thinking it would be a little easier for him. So, it’s a work in progress, but I think if he develops confidence, he’ll be a good punter. But that is the advantage of rugby punts. It starts with the protection, it’s hard to field.”
