Interesting.
I could see keeping the door open for him. But, I wish it would come with harsh terms. Take him off of scholarship. Let him pay his own way and earn his way back on to the team. Maybe back on scholarship if he course corrects his life.
But, I have no idea how those things work. But, I think it would send both a strong message of deterrent to the team and a further message that faults can be overcome if you work toward redemption.
Or, he can transfer. I genuinely don't give a shite. Stupid choice and just another blackeye for the AD as a whole.

People are always sorrowful when they get caught. I'm sure it will be a long road back, if he gets a chance at all. RTR

People, especially young people drive fast in cars sometimes. It is dangerous and there needs to be repercussions, but a cancellation is not the answer.
Give the guy a massive fine, community service and suspend his license. Then let him move on with life.
This cancel-culture crap needs to seriously chill.

Not everyone does it with intent to distribute narcotics and weapons charges, as well.
But, yes, no one was hurt. He is young and hopefully overcomes it for his own betterment. But, that doesn't necessarily mean he deserves the privilege of retaining a football scholarship at the University of Alabama.

We have taken a beating lately in the press. Surely that has to mean something to the admin?

I’ve raced for most of my adult life mostly at the drag strip. Few times at the round tracks.
The vast majority of kids like Mitchell really have no clue how to handle a car like that Challenger, it’s an extremely heavy car. 4-4.5k what it weighs, that’s approximately 2tons and at 140mph, it’s a death trap waiting to happen especially in todays times with more traffic on the road than ever.
Plus him being fricked up smoking weed driving at that kinda speed in that particular car. He basically turned that car into weapon itself and very lucky no one was killed. To me that alone should be a felony.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't just speeding, he was running from the cops because his buddy said "Punch it"
This isn't some idiot kid going fast in his new toy. He was dealing with a few pounds, a scale, and some wrapped $100's and then got caught so he fled

I was unaware of these additional factors. This makes a big difference.

Weed, NIL money, and a gun for protection is how i see it...

wow today's weed must be some kind of new strand. back when i was young n dumb, i had some good weed. good weed back then and going fast meant my camaro was traveling about 30 mph.
let that young man go thru a tough process to get back to bama. enough kids get kicked to the curb as it is. he can redeem himself and help others at the same time.

The presence of scales in the car for weighing the weed sort of works against that theory. His best hope is to convince the other guy to testify that everything belonged to him. It doesn't sound like the guy is eager to agree to this, not surprisingly. Not to subborn perjury, but if I were Tony Mitchell, I would consider offering the guy a cut of my future earnings if it would improve his memory.

If the other guy says the stuff was his, Tony Mitchell will probably get off relatively light. He will likely make millions of dollars off his football career, and could help the guy out for doing the right thing. If the guy doesn't say the stuff was his, neither of them make any substantial money for the rest of their lives.
ETA: That's assuming each of them trusts the other, which is probably a poor assumption.

So let me understand what you are saying the "right" thing is lying about who it belongs to. OK to each his own.

Yes. That’s what this person is suggesting. Lie to do the right thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if this person is a guidance counselor in high school smh
