Alabama approves contracts for new hires, extensions for six coaches

The Compensation Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama met via a video conference Monday to approve the contracts for new coaching hires Tommy Rees, Kevin Steele and Robert Bala, as well as approve raises for eight other returning staff members.

Both Rees and Steele are set to earn $1.9 million apiece in their first seasons with the Crimson Tide. Rees, formerly of Notre Dame, was hired as Alabama’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach this offseason. His salary is set to increase $100,000 each year of the contract’s length. Steele is no stranger to UA, having spent two previous stints in Tuscaloosa, and returns to serve as the defensive coordinator. Both coordinator contracts are 3-year deals. 

For comparison's sake, former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, who took a job with the New England Patriots this offseason, earned $1.1 million in the final season of his UA contract. On the other side of the ball, defensive coordinator Pete Golding made $1.6 million this past season before leaving Tuscaloosa for Ole Miss with one year left on his contract.

Returning UA assistants Joe Cox, Robert Gillespie, Coleman Hutzler, Freddie Roach, Holman Wiggins and Eric Wolford all received extensions and raises. The only assistant that did not was cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson, who is under contract through February of 2024. 

In addition to the nine assistants, the Board of Trustees also approved new deals for UA staff members David Ballou and Bob Welton. Ballou is entering his fourth season at the head of the Tide strength and conditioning program. Welton is in Year 6, and his Tide responsibilities include the organization of all recruiting efforts while also working with compliance regarding initial eligibility and assisting with coaching clinics, camps and other on-campus events.

Below is a full list of new contracts for assistant football coaches and staff members: 
Robert Bala – $350,000 through February 2025
David Ballou – $725,000 through February 2026 (up from $700,000)
Joe Cox – $425,000 through February 2025 (up from $325,000)
Robert Gillespie – $625,000 through February 2025 (up from $565,000)
Coleman Hutzler – $595,000 through February 2025
Tommy Rees – $1.9 million to $2.1 million through February 2026
Freddie Roach – $775,000 through February 2025 (up from $750,000)
Kevin Steele – $1.9 million through February 2026
Bob Welton – $255,000 through February 2025 (up from $235,000)
Holmon Wiggins – $875,000 through February 2025 (up from $850,000)
Eric Wolford – $925,000 through February 2025 ($900,000)
