are rising ticket/stadium prices, how predictable the sport has become in terms of who's going to be in the College Football Playoff, or even the comforts of being at home with unlimited food and drinks, free range to use the restroom, and control over the TV outweighing the excitement of watching a game live and in person.

I have so many friends that are avid CFB fans these are the main reasons they no longer attend or attend as many games in person with the exception of the playoff part. Many pull for schools that will never be in the playoffs or at least in the near future but for them price to go to the game, including tickets, travel, and lodging are just to high. Not to mention the price of food and everything else.

The one thing Sankey forgot to mention is what has made the conferences the most money but has also in my opinion led to lower attendance is the TV contracts. It was not that long ago with the exception of ND that a fan could not watch every game from home on the TV. You can even watch the reply within 24 hours on conference networks most of the time.

TV has had the biggest impact but yet for me the biggest positive for watching the games.

Why pay ridiculous prices for everything involved a round trip to attend a game, hassling through thick traffic, crowds, etc. Imo, it's much more enjoyable to relax at home watching games on TV at a fraction of the cost. Restroom, food & drink are a snap during commercials without missing a play.

I completely understand that point and agree with you and everyone with that opinion. But there is just something about being at the game on campus. I feel like the broadcast over analyzes the game to a point where it ruins it....at least for me.

Agree about the broadcast. I usually turn the sound off.

Yeah, I love & miss the live campus & stadium atmosphere and I sometimes yell at the TV crew to nix their drivel & just call the game.

The game experience is great but enjoying it from the house or even with the group here that meets up is great and does not take up my whole day/weekend to attend the game.

I try and watch more than just Bama but with 5 kids and all having scheduled activities on the weekend somewhat hard.

That's probably why the reduced seating capacity for the new basketball arena. People generally, but young people especially, are not buying season tickets like we (I'm 69) did right after graduation - and keeping them for years. Big games sell out, but I worry about Bryant Denny attendance long term. And when we are asked to pay thousands of dollars for good seats, even upper deck seats, and we see only Auburn and A&M as "good games" next year, how many will keep buying those expensive tickets - and coming to the games - to watch Austin Peay, La Monroe, Utah State, and mighty Vandy and Miss State on the schedule?

When I was a kid growing up in the 60's, we listened to games on the radio. Few games were on tv, and I think the first televised night game was 1969 - right? Alabama vs Ole Miss? So games were in the afternoon. When I was at Alabama in the '70's, BD Stadium seated only 60,000, and even Legion Field in Birmingham, my home, was 75,000, so not nearly the traffic, and even big games were daytime. Wife and I did not go to LSU or Tennessee last year because of the night kick off. In our 60's, we just don't want to fight traffic at midnight when we can watch the game with friends on tv. Also, to pay thousands of dollars for tickets and not be able to buy a Jack and water for a 7:00 kick off (or a bloody Mary before a 2:30 kickoff) is ridiculous. Long term, more and more people may decline to pay big money for these restrictions.

For many Ala fans, game day is an event, a social experience. Many people treat it as their vacation. Some of them dont even go to the games, they just want to be there. Its like a big party for a whole bunch of people in Alabama.

Never considered it a vacation but had the experience a lot since my first game in 78, though it was at Legion and my 1st game at BDS that year was UF IIRC, but now I look forward to going to away games at stadiums I have not been to yet.

Big parties I guess are not my thing anymore.

For many years I did the season tickets thing and was part of what became a huge tailgate crew. Started the day with "Breakfast on the Quad" and ended with pizza for dinner while watching the late games on the screens and satellite at the tailgate. It was an all day long party.

As I got older, hauling all of the gear out of the trailer and setting up became distasteful. Cooking for 300 plus people began to ruin the party for me. When I moved to ATL, I stepped away from the tailgate scene. One of my former team mates and I started swapping out host duties for a smaller crew (8 ~ 12) at our homes in our Bama Cave theaters or the deck out back.

Better food, better friends, better way to watch the games (views and weather), and no changing of the rules year to year in the stadium or on the quad. I have not missed the late night drive home after the crowds left Tuscaloosa nor have I miss the game atmosphere (too much). A few games now are just me and my dogs in the cave. Much more relaxed way to watch the games and I saved a bunch of money.

me and my brother did the season tix thing for a while also, loved it. loved the atmosphere, everything. but as we got older my health deteriorated to the point where i just couldnt do it any longer. he continued getting the tix but slowly started picking and choosing the big games to go to. i spent that time at a good friends watching on a 15 foot screen and enjoying really good home cooked food. the last 2 years i spent every game right here at my lil apartment by myself. my gameday meal, either chili dogs and vinegar & salt chips or chili brat dogs w/vinegar & salt chips. loved this time also. i watch as many games as i can. i just love college football.
