Yep on 3rd and long he chose to “cover” a lot .... pissed me off

Can’t blitz all the time but I prefer the pressure , make Qb throw hot routes , and trust guys to tackle their man short of the sticks

Pruitt was aggressive. I’d rather get beat being aggressive than drop back like Kirby. It drove me nuts

Doesn’t mean that we have to like it. I called out Kirby for 3rd and Kirby too

Sure. I just don't like the revisionist history people are employing to knock Golding. We've sucked on 3rd down way more years than we haven't.

Preach it reverend! Die fighting, don't just roll over and wait for it to happen.

Scrimmage Nuggets:

-- All three quarterbacks played well Saturday. Nick Saban mentioned efficiency more than once in his post-scrimmage comments, and all three signal-callers completed nearly 70 percent of their passes and led one scoring drive each during the 133-play practice. Mac Jones completed long passes to DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle but threw an interception. Bryce Young, in his first scrimmage, played well but turned the ball over on a fumbled snap. Paul Tyson didn’t have any turnovers this afternoon or at all in any of the last three Saturday practices.

-- They also worked on a lot of situations, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. They covered all the bases, basically -- whether it was placing the ball at each 1-yard line, setting the chains at 3rd and long or working on plays with only a few seconds on the clock. That’s been the approach the last two weeks. It also sounds like Young saw a few extra reps to get him caught up.

-- The running game was also effective. Najee Harris is clearly the No. 1 back and had a solid outing Saturday. But Harris has talented teammates at his position. It sounds like both Trey Sanders and Roydell Williams put together successful scrimmages earlier today.

-- Defensively, a few guys were in black, no-contact jerseys. One was Christian Barmore, who Saban said is dealing with a minor knee injury and will be out for a few days. Another was Josh Jobe at corner. Justin Eboigbe and Marcus Banks stepped up in their absences, respectively. Also of note -- and stop us if you’ve heard this before -- Will Anderson was “unreal.”

-- Saban said Will Reichard was 4-of-5 on field goals with his only miss coming from roughly 55 yards out. Although he is still competing with Joseph Bulovas, Reichard has performed well in both scrimmages. It sounds like the punting was good but not great on Saturday.

-- A bit of housekeeping: the team will have the next two days off before returning to practice on Tuesday. It will practice three days in a row and will start focusing on opponents before having the weekend off before the first game week of the season. Football is almost back.

It looks like our best OL is
LT - 70 Leatherwood / 60 Randolf
LG - 65 Brown / 55 Ekiyor
C - 69 Dickerson / ??*
RG - 69 Dickerson / 55 Ekiyor
RT - 73 Neal / 75 Brown

So we cloned Dickerson, I didn’t realize we had made it that far lol.

Legit insider:

Man you guys are getting worked up about things that have already been discussed with both players and families. Mac is and will be the starter unless he starts to play bad. Young will get reps in nearly every game and increase/decrease based on performance. This is Mac final year at Bama and he should improve his draft stock this year if he stays healthy. Bryce knows he is the future and he is not going anywhere, especially as long as Sark is here. Pointless conversation.

Yeah anyone thinking anything different just wants to stir it up. Young will play and get good reps but Mac attack is the guy.

A&M's top receiver just opted out. That game just got a little easier.

Yea man our fanbases infatuation with the backup quarterback is getting old. It seems like every thread on BOL gets derailed about our QB situation. Everybody acts like we dont have a coach that knows how to manage this situation. It's not a Jalen/Tua situation, or a Fromm/Fields situation. That's one thing I commend saban on more than anything is he refuses to blow smoke up these kids asses just to get them signed. I'm sure he has a plan for just about every situation imaginable that could "possibly" happen. With covid both guys are going to play a lot

Here a tidbit from the first Saturday of the Real College Football season:

Great find from @starrettjason: #collegekickers went 32/53 (60.1%) on field goal attempts yesterday. Worst day of FG kicking in FBS since 2007.

Looks like the field is coming back to join us.
And we did not even contribute to this epic statistic.

I honestly think this has less to do with the virus and much more to do with agents giving these kids bad advice.

most years a kid quitting on his team would look really bad and probably impact when he's drafted. This year, not so much, and the agents are taking advantage of it.

With Ausbon opting out and Buckley out for the year with injury, the Aggies don't have anyone on the roster that had more than 3 catches last year.

People are acting like problems getting off the field on 3rd down against HUNH teams are a new problem for Bama.

Truth is, outside of Pruitt's tenure, it's been the most consistent part of the defense for close to the last 10 years.

This is a valid point.

I don't know if this is just a normal evolution (the wishbone lasted for two decades), but it seems that the spread/HUNH system has really resisted a definitive defensive counter scheme for a long time, for most all teams.

Rule changes have also certainly helped.

12 years ago a DC could match personnel with the OC on every play according to down and distance. They could sub as they saw fit and there was absolutely nothing the OC could do about it.

I think part of it has to be the quality of quarterbacks and receivers coming out of high school now. Back in the 60s and 70s, high school receivers were just blockers or decoys, and most kids didnt want that role. That has changed in high school, where the pitching and catching is wide open and many kids want to be the star receiver. According to reports, we had 3 quarterbacks completing 70 pct of their passes in the scrimmage. Our biggest problem has been getting worn down in the 4th qtr and last season we had 3, 4, or 5 freshmen on the field together at times.
