That's nice, but he should and will wear the sooner helmet game time. Glad the novelty helmet auction proceeds will go to charity though.

He’s wearing a combined helmet at the game.

Kool and Baker were highly regarded and i would be willing to bet its more of a talent miss than that of a coaching miss.

Kool and Baker were both good 4-3 D-line coaches. Slants and gap penetration are the game they coached. That is also the game Barmore tended to play this past year.

The past two seasons the D-line did not play well in two gap 3-4 system that Saban prefers. If the D-line hits the gap or slants it prevents the Mike LB from being able to play his assignments. With the 3-4 the line controls multiple O-linemen and the Mike shoots the crease when the blocking breaks down. If an O-lineman gets to the second level too early the Mike cannot shoot the crease and the Will cannot scrape to clean up the play.

The Mike should be making tackles at and behind the LoS and the Will should be scraping to cut backs and edge bounces. The teaching flaw for both Kool and Baker also messed up what the Mike/Will were supposed to be doing.

Two good D-line coaches but not fits for Saban's assignment methods.

That’s what I posted earlier . Didn’t go into detail bc some on here probably may not understand technique but unless it is 3rd and LONG , you are not going to see our DL shooting gaps too often especially with any QB Saban sees as a threat to run

We are really reaching when we say Charles Kelly should be having more input on plays... There is a reason Nole fans hate him more than bama fans hate Golding...

staying on staff is one thing. remaining the dc is something else. if he does stay at dc. then he has to emphasize tackling. plus find more speed at ilb. it simply does not matter what a player knows, if he's to dang slow to get there.

Saban loves him some Golding. We will see if he is right in 2020 or if this was a massive failed experiment. I'm pulling for Pete!

He had tons of talent and they were blah - which is one of the reasons Jimbo didn't take him to A&M

That may be, but he still had a lot more talent to work with than any team in the ACC not named Clemson and still managed to put some very mediocre defenses out there. Kelly is a DBs coach, not a DC. Nothing wrong with that, but it's what he is.

He coached the safeties last season and McKinney was probably the most technically sound player on our defense. If you have an issue with the coverage technique the corners play then Scott and Saban are the two responsible for that.

If this is about the LB's and just general tackling on defense, instead of just in the secondary, I agree he isn't a good ILB coach. But when was the last good one? As has been discussed recently, Saban values the DC at that position even if the coaching isn't necessarily at the level you would expect. As for tackling... no one really tackles well anymore. You just don't get the reps in practice, especially when an injury bug is decimating whole units. There are things you can do to work on form, but at the end of the day across the board tackling as gotten worse.

An OLD saying that's still true: The best football teams are the ones with the best blocking and tackling.

It amazes me how people seem to forget that. It's the most basic but most important tenet for contolling the outcome of every play, possession and game. The #1 mission of the defense is to evade and beat blocks and tackle the sumbitch who has the ball ASAP, preferably at or behind the LOS. The #1 mission of the offense is to block lots of defenders closest to where your your own sumbitch who has the ball is going with it so he doesn't get tackled. Generally speaking, if you aint got or gonna be getting the ball you should be blocking someone.
