Milroe is actually good at that though, so if he's the guy it shouldn't be an issue. I'm continuing to talk myself into the idea that our offense can be pretty solid with him if we go with the 2014 formula and the OL is good. It won't be like the last several years, but if the defense improves we'll be a really good team.

Agree

I also just went back and watched the Alabama/Notre Dame Rose Bowl (in Dallas) from 2020 again. They moved the ball efficiently against us most of that game, they just didn't have the dudes to make big plays or score within the 40. 375 yards, 4.7 YPP, 3.7 yards per rush.

I just really like watching Rees' offenses. Looking forward to seeing what we show in week 2.

I keep envisioning him taking a read 50 yards against Texas. I just want it to click for Simpson or Milroe because I think either really raises our ceiling

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I'm not that worried about the offense. I'm more interested in seeing how the defense holds up, at least against Texas, who might have the best offense we'll face all year.

For example, how is Sark going to attack a true Freshman like Downs? How is he going to attack a guy like Moore, who is great near the LOS but can become a liability if he's asked to cover guys deep? Can our CBs lock down Worthy and Mitchell? Do we have enough DL depth to get through 4 quarters?

Agreed; very interested to see how the defense holds up against what will likely be the most talented offense we face in the regular season.

The front seven needs to be absolutely relentless in that game, particularly the front 4 guys.

I wonder if Steele has shelved the Nickel and Dime Rabbits packages

With the additional depth we added in the transfer portal we should be able to hang with Texas defensively. I'm concerned about the offense producing numerous 3 and outs like last season and tiring the defense out. Our increased defensive depth won't mean much if guys are tired.

If Texas has good receivers and a good QB they will score points. We cant be dropping TD passes, or firing fast balls at the receivers on short passes. The dropped passes are getting to be a problem. Hopefully we narrow it down to 2 qbs and get the best receivers out there to work together. Maybe it will get better.

I agree this is the most concerning part. I think Rees can scheme plenty of offense out of the guys we have on the roster, but the scheme only works when guys catch balls that hit them in the hands.

We gotta trust Rees. I mean, he's gotta do a good job for this team to be successful. I'm not sure if he's up to the task, but he's more important than whoever is QB.

Looking at that Florida game against LSU w/ Anthony Richardson it was beautifully orchestrated by Mullen. Lots of misdirection and easy reads. When you have a QB that the defense fears it opens up the field, and that's what Richardson did. QB runs, option runs, and all the other stuff Mullen has done for years worked well in that game.

You can't win in college football without a good offense anymore. It has to be dynamic and score a lot. That said, you *can* have a high scoring, dynamic offense AND have a QB that is limited if you have a few other things around him and a good OC that can lean into what he does well. If the O-line plays up to its potential and the RBs are good then Rees should hopefully be able to make Milroe work.

My concern is that Milroe's running ability scares offenses enough to get the WRs open and then they drop easy passes.

What I saw in A Day and in some of the scrimmages is that most of the deep balls by Milroe are predetermined and to the outside. Not super effective.

I have pretty good confidence in our secondary and front 7. I don't see Texas putting up a bunch of points.

I was wondering if anyone would mention Mullen's playcalling for Richardson. It was excellent and suited to what Richardson could do well. I too hope we see something similar for Milroe because if we do, I believe we will butcher opposing teams.

Walk on tryouts are the 26th. Chad Powers is coming out I’ll bet.

The Daboll-Hurts relationship on bath salts

Daboll did an okay job. I think he did a good job in designing plays for Hurts that were mostly effective. We ran a lot of triple option/veer type stuff with him. The problem is that he didn't develop as a passer.

It seems to me that last year's personnel was superior to this year's. The biggest difference is at playcaller.

I kind of look at each season like it's 2008 with us not having won anything but trying to get to the top.

Unless there are some interior defensive lineman and inside linebackers that are much better than last years bunch, then we're really going to struggle.

I think Texas gets us early and maybe Ole Miss. Hopefully going forward Nick can get them ready for a good second half of the season.

I love both. They were just a bit of an odd fit. BoB and Milroe would take all of the worst aspects of that and multiply them

I think we are going to upgrade big time at ILB this year. I think the secondary as a whole should be improved as well, with more athleticism and range at safety. Biggest losses, personnel-wise, from last year are Will Anderson (clearly) and Brian Branch IMO. We have plenty of high quality depth at OLB to, in-part, mitigate the loss of Anderson.

Biggest questions for me are: 1) can we cut down (substantially) on penalties, 2) do we have a DL that can shut down the run/hold the point of attack & also cause interior disruption in the passing game, and 3) can the ILBs get back to playing smart, aggressive ball instead of always being a step behind and/or getting dragged 4-5 yards after contact.
