I started this to help me visualize where we stand going into next year. I figured it would get buried in the main baseball thread. I’ll work to keep this updated. The magic number is 40 on the roster (with 11.7 scholarships spread across 32 players). The NCAA Oversight Committee this week approved a one-year waiver for Division I Baseball programs to have a roster size of 40 players, while also allowing them to spread 11.7 scholarships over 32 players instead of the 27-counter cap that used to be in place.

Just last month, those two measures were taken up by the NCAA Student Athlete Experience Committee, and the committee overwhelmingly supported the waivers. The Oversight Committee followed suit this week, and the waiver was granted for the 2023-24 academic and athletic year.

Here’s the SI Baseball tracker - let’s see who does a better job of keeping things up to date

Alabama Baseball 2023 Offseason Tracker

Keeping up with all the happenings in one of the most important recent offseasons for the Crimson Tide baseball program.

Hope I’m wrong, but I’m worried we’ll lose a lot with a coaching change. I have no idea what NIL looks like in lower popularity sports.

We have a chance to level the scholarship playing field with NIL money. If we don’t, then it’s going to be really hard to be a Bama baseball fan.

If 42 enters the portal then I will fight whoever poaches him.

You already have a difficultly getting elite talent to campus, if they’re drafted high enough. And even then, if they are good enough you’ll only have them for two seasons. Now guys will routinely test the waters of NIL and additional tuition assistance elsewhere. It’s a really tough hill to climb, and be consistently good, until something is either done with out-of-state tuition assistance or being serious about NIL for baseball.

I read where the state of Florida had passed this but I’m not savvy enough in navigating their legislative web page to know if this is the final version; but in essence- state schools can now waive out of state tuition for athletes on scholarship. Those of you with contacts in Montgomery get on the horn. It won’t solve everything but it’s a step in the right direction.

quote:

CS/SB 7026: Higher Education Finances
GENERAL BILL by Appropriations ; Appropriations Committee on Education

Higher Education Finances; Requiring the Board of Governors to develop regulations for university boards of trustees relating to contracting for the construction of new facilities or for work on existing facilities; authorizing a state university or Florida College System institution to waive the out-of-state fee for a student who is an intercollegiate athlete receiving a scholarship; revising the list of authorized expenditures that may be included in a carry forward spending plan for state universities; revising a limitation on compensation for state university employees; providing that certain educational facility contracting and construction techniques applicable to school districts also apply to Florida College System institutions, etc.

Effective Date: 7/1/2023
Last Action: 5/18/2023 - Chapter No. 2023-95

Think I’m safe to mark him down as a ‘keeper’?

Redshirt freshman RHP Kade Woods has entered the portal, we have learned.

Woods led UA relievers with 38 strikeouts, a total that was tied for fifth on the team.

If only we could offer them a scholarship.

And take a dime away from Alabama football? Surely you jest! The toilets need a fresh coat of gold paint; we can’t possibly afford to offer NIL money to baseball players!

Read this on another board - TIFWIW

quote:

Shelton had an in-home with Mark Kingston last night. His family relocated to near Columbia SC. His sister is committed to play softball for the Gamecocks.

So…the fact that he’s already back home in Carolina (not on campus). Do with those facts what you will.

With that said, Kingston is rumored to be a front runner for the Miami job and may take it if offered.

All of this leads me to believe Shelton isn’t just leveraging NIL for a good deal at Alabama. It sounds like he’s gone.

I hope he allows Vaughn to come visit and at least *try* to keep him.

Maybe he just really liked Coach Bo? I would understand this move if it was all about NIL, but if NIL is not what it's about then I don't get it. We just hired a proven coach that gets the best out of his players offensively, so count me as confused on this.

This is up to the fans ultimately. You’re probably spot on with most of their priorities though.
