Other newcomers

ALEX TCHIKOU (6-11, 200) (C) (FR) (INJURED 2021)
- Class of 2020 > #64 Overall (4-star)

247 write up

quote:

Very good size for position. Slender, chiseled frame with long arms. Outstanding athlete both laterally and vertically. Has elite defensive upside with combination of size, length and physical tools. Generally plays hard. Has range to three on offense but athleticism makes him best in transition. Can improve offensively within perimeter but has high ceiling as interior scorer given physical gifts. Shot selection needs work. Ceiling is extremely high but will need to improve skill to get there.

JD DAVISON (6-3, 175) (PG) (FR)
- Class of 2021 > #9 Overall (5-star)

247 write up (1st round projection - comparison : Ja Morant)

quote:

Has a good physical build for a point guard. Extremely athletic. Explosive leaper who specializes in getting to the rim and finishing. Also has great body control and is a creative and adept finisher. Has a reliable jump shot to keep the defense honest. Sees the court well. Finds the diagonal pass. Can make the high degree of difficulty pass. Has the tools to be a high level perimeter defender and rebounder.

LANGSTON WILSON (6-9, 200) (F) (JR)
- Class of 2021 (JUCO) > #2 JUCO (4-star)

247 write up

quote:

An exceptional leaper with length. Runs the floor extremely well. The lefty is tough to defend in the paint when attacking the rim. Keeps the defense honest as a three-point shooter. Dangerous offensive rebounder. Has room to improve as a ball handler and passer. Versatile defender. Has a lot of upside but must gain weight and get stronger.

JUSAUN HOLT (6-6, 200) (G/F) (FR)
- Class of 2021 > #103 Overall (4-star)

247 write up

quote:

Has good size for a wing. Shoots the ball well and has great potential as a shooter. Not a powerful nor explosive athlete, but is a smooth athlete with a feel for the game and ability to make unorthodox plays. Decent handle and passing ability. Needs to gain strength and mass. Has potential as a defender and rebounder.

Additional possible newcomers
- Charles Bediako (C) (Class of 2021) (6-11, 215) (#26 overall, 4-star) (awaiting commitment)

- Nimari Burnett (G) (Transfer from Texas Tech) (Class of 2020) (6-4, 190) (#34 overall, 4-star) (transfer decision to be made April 8th)

Has Rojas said he is leaving? I thought he had another year.

Somebody has to leave to make the numbers work and Rojas is the pretty clear choice for a bunch of reasons

I'm just going to go ahead and go on record now with my prediction that we will be a better team next year than we were this year. The biggest hole we are going to have to fill is Herb's defensive versatility. We don't really have anyone who fits that bill. Ellis isn't quite long enough to effectively defend the post the way Herb could. Offensively we will be significantly better and more consistent though. Between JD, JQ, Shack, and Ellis we won't have any trouble getting into the paint and Gary is an ORB machine. Ellis isn't quite on Herb's level defensively but he more than makes up for it on the other end. It's just going to be a question of the coaching staff putting all the puzzle pieces together the right way, which I think they'll be able to do.

Holt too as a newcomer. He will help us out.

Thanks for the thread.

I think that the ceiling for that roster is, without a doubt, higher than the current one.

There are intangible and rotational things that have to get figured out with all the pieces, but that roster has all the makings of a very, very good team that can beat you in a ton of different ways.

I just don't see where he finds PT next year. In a lot of years I'd agree, but gonna be tough to find a role with Primo, Ellis, Miles and Wilson already filling that long G/F role.

But he definitely looks like a talented kid. Would love to see him show up and push for PT.

Outside of seeing what Davison adds, I'm most excited to see a full season of max minutes from JQ/Primo/Ellis.

Primo and Ellis are going to be dudes next season.

You think Davison is coming off the bench the entire year?

Yeah, the biggest question mark to me is who steps up into the leadership role. I think we will be OK there though. JQ, Shack, Ellis, and Gary all seem to have a lot of those traits and I'd be pretty surprised if JD doesn't have an alpha mentality. Rotationally it's just figuring out who plays the best together. We're going to be extremely versatile.

Wish we could line that group up and tip it off against ULL or somebody tommorow

I'm 100% more excited about basketball than football at this point.

Probably like Q this year. Off bench but starters minutes. I’d rather have him Start at The 1 and start JQ at the 2 over Shack but Oats isn’t gonna do that

It's great to have these sorts of options

I think you start JD and Shack in the back court with JQ coming off the bench again. It's a role he excelled in, and there's no reason to fix what isn't broken. You can play any 2 of those 3 at any time as well without having to sacrifice ball handling, which is something you couldn't do with a back court of JQ, Shack, and Petty. That's why we had Herb playing point forward when JQ was on the bench.

If I'm taking the roster we have coming in, I'm starting the year with:

Q at point
JD and Primo at wing
Ellis at swing
Gary at Forward

Not sure Shack is going to be able to finish in traffic consistently like we need. I'd have him take Q's 6th man role. You'd still have Q or JD to run point if Shack came in for one of them. Do not want Shack running point.

May have to start Alex over Gary in certain situations due to matchups. Alex could start in Ellis' spot if Oats wanted to start with 2 forwards as he has some this season.

Miles, Holt and Wilson can rotate in multiple spots. Bediako and Alex can swap. Gary and KAH can swap. Now if Burnett shows up, who knows at the guard spots. So many options. I just know I didn't really care for Herb running the point forward position. It seemed to slow down the offense too often. I'm not crazy about the experimenting of Miles at that position either. If we are not going to press to up the tempo, we need to keep it quick and moving.

I know Oats is not crazy about using a press, but we saw last night that without it UCLA was able to dictate tempo. I always want my opponent to play at my tempo.

I just don't see these guys as interchangeable pieces. Tchikou is pretty unique in terms of skill set relative to his physical stature. He's essentially a combo guard in the body of a power forward. He's a pure face up, run and gun type guy on offense. Definitely not a low post banger. A lot of how he fits into the rotation is going to depend on how far along he is defensively. If he makes good progress there, he's going to play a lot because you can stick him practically anywhere on offense.
