Saban always goes with the safe bet/reliable no fumble guy

Except that Diggs has been one of the worst at fielding punts. He has no return ability. He's timid, and honestly I'd be surprised if he doesn't get replaced at CB just like last year.

Diggs at PR is a classic example of Saban not wanting to take a guy's job away, even when there are better players on the roster.

I have always scratched my head over this.. he did the same at LSU.. but it seems to work out well for him. Would love to see young talent though

My opinion is diametrically opposed to yours on Diggs, and I think the bolded portion above is particularly crazy. I think he's one of the single best athletes on our roster and a heckuva ball player. He's currently Bama's #1 corner, and that's saying something. If Surtain overtakes anyone, it'll be Smith, not Diggs, as evidenced by the depth chart.

I want Diggs involved as much as possible.

Brian Robinson at 4 - will he be the next NFL back to transfer?

Locksley, when speaking to the media for the first time as our OC, said emphatically that the strength of this offense is the RB position, and that we have 4 guys who can play, and his job is to figure out how to get the ball to all of them.

Couple this with the fact that the NFL is not interested in drafting RBs with a lot of wear and tear, and the additional fact that normally, folks get banged up and Robinson could very well find himself as the # 2 back in a few weeks, and he's not going anywhere.

He's not transferring, and it would be a terrible idea for him to do so. His best path to the league goes through Tuscaloosa, and he's likely to end up being the #1 or #2 RB at some point in his career before leaving TTown.

Watch the Clemson and Bama game he did pretty good. Had issues in the beginning but got past it. So I disagree.

My guess is Diggs and Waddle with both get some chances to return punts. If Waddle doesn't make a lot of mistakes and makes plays, his role will probably increase.

I am 100% fine with this in PRs - I'm sure yall remember 14 or whatever year it was when you held your breath on every single punt, at least I did.

Don't want to go back to that and with all the talent on the offensive side of the ball this year, I think security and getting it into their hands is more important.

Hell I remember Brandon Brooks from the Shula years. If he had ever caught a punt, he probably would have been dynamic. But, I think he muffed 58 straight.

That said, I also remember Arenas. A good returner is a huge weapon. I'm hoping the addition of a special teams coach is going to help us this year.

Arenas was the exception for return men, not the rule. I don't think there has been a more dangerous or explosive punt returner in college football this century.

I think you are right on Diggs. Didnt Saban say he was one of 2 DBs that had won their position.

No doubt, but he also fielded the ball very well. Same with Eddie Jackson - he was having a great year prior to his injury) - but great combo of reliability and explosiveness.

Well, yeah. I'm not disagreeing with your post. I'm just ready for another good returner - one that catches the ball AND makes big returns.

Definitely. In 2008 Arenas was huge. He had more yardarge than the offense against Tulane I think when Andre Smith was out. That is why i wasn't completely surprised by what happened against Utah in the Sugar Bowl with Andre Smith not playing.

Why would he leave when D. Harris is gone after this year?

I'd like to see Waddle as the PR at some point this year for two reasons. Firstly, I don't like having a starting DB in an already thin and inexperienced secondary getting that much extra exposure to an injury. Secondly, I'm ready for a game-changer at PR again. While Diggs is fine, Waddle seems electric. Saban probably just needs Waddle to get more comfortable in practice fielding kicks so we don't end up with unnecessary turnovers. Hopefully by week 3-4 we can move from Diggs to Waddle.

This is what I think it going to happen. Diggs is there to catch the punt cleanly while the game is still within reach. He has done it in live action plenty of times before.

Waddle will get a chance to field punts under live fire in mop up duty. If he can earn the coach's trust in catching it cleanly for a few games, he can then graduate to being the PR in conference play. But Saban isn't going to put a true freshman out there to muff the first punt of the year when he has never played under the big lights before.
