So is Freddie’s #5 getting retired or no?

That's going to depend on the circumstances of his departure. If the FO made serious efforts to re-sign him and he's taking similar money to go to LA or New York, frick him. If he gets something silly like 6/$200 then no hard feelings and I'm sure he will be welcome around the team after he retires.

They (Braves ownership) didn't go all out to sign Freddie. Probably the right move against what the market will pay him but screw ownership on principle .

Didn't realize Olson is a Parkview alum, same HS as Francoeur. And now he'll play for his hometown team, best of luck Matt!

This Braves lineup will be ridiculous this year.

1 Acuna
2 Albies
3 Olsen
4 Riley
5 Ozuna
6 Rosario/Soler
7 Duvall
8 D'Arnaud
9 Swanson

Don't see a better lineup currently in the NL. (Assuming Ozuna and Acuna return to form and we resign either Soler or Rosario or both.

I think they did what they reasonably could without over-extending themselves. Freddie gave all he had for the Braves for a long time and helped bring a WS to Atlanta. Best of luck to Freddie and happy to hear that they signed Olsen. Roster should still be nasty next year if everyone plays to their ability.

I’m both devastated to see Freddie go and happy that we got such a great 1B for (hopefully) the foreseeable future.

I’ll echo what others have said on the prospects too. Loved following Pache for years in the minors but the bat stalled. I’m not sure on Contreras as a big league catcher but the Braves traded from strength to get Olson.

Good trade by AA.
Olson will only be 28 in a couple weeks.
He's an outstanding defensive player.
He's put some big stats in a pitcher friendly Oakland ballpark.
Last season .271 batting average. 39HR, 111RBI's, 35 doubles, 153 hits.
Also, played at Parkview high near Atlanta, leading them to back to back state championships in 2011/12.

I don’t disagree with any of it. Hell of a trade but I’ll miss FF

I respect a man who can make a logical and rational decision in the midst of an extremely emotional situation like this was with Freddie leaving.

Braves have Olson, Acuña & Albies on long term deals for a lower AAV than what the Mets gave Scherzer :)

And Riley is a Super 2 so he gets arbitration for all of them, but he is still under team control for 4 years.

Atlanta Braves sign Matt Olson to 8-year, $168 million deal through 2029 season

LINK

NORTH PORT, Florida -- The first call from a general manager to a newly acquired player is usually perfunctory, a simple welcome. But when Atlanta Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos phoned Matt Olson on Monday, after acquiring the All-Star first baseman in a trade for the Oakland Athletics' slugger, he had more news.

Anthopoulos told Olson that his next call would go to Olson's agent to open conversations about a long-term deal.

About 24 hours later, Olson signed an eight-year, $168 million contract with the Braves to culminate a series of events that he repeatedly referred to as "whirlwind."

The deal, announced Tuesday, runs through the 2029 season. It also includes a $20 million club option for 2030 with no buyout.

Said Olson, who rooted for the Braves while growing up in the Atlanta area: "The stars kind of aligned perfectly."
