In the latest college football preview magazine from Athlon Sports, an anonymous ACC coach addressed Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney poaching Garrett Riley from TCU for its opening at offensive coordinator...
quote:

"This is the biggest year for Dabo Swinney since he became a national title winner. They have so many new pieces and philosophical changes. … When you recruit against these guys, all you hear is ‘family, family, family’ and him going outside of his group and making the change at offensive coordinator (Garrett Riley) isn’t about family," an anonymous coach said. "That’s accepting the reality you’re just another football program, and you have to do things like Alabama and Ohio State to stay relevant with those guys."

The only thing I hate more than hypocritical people is anonymous people.

Where else is he going to find an OC for his school besides another OC or QB coach at another school? That's how it works. Think Dabo is gonna hire Joe Schmoe on the couch? No it has to come from another school. I wish people would think about logistics more. So many people fail to think through the whole logistics in a 360 degree view. They look at a 5 degree view. I'm glad I work with Ivy league grads and UT/Ga Tech grads.

NFL is another option but that doesn't happen as often as the other way around. BOB is one who did at Bama

What’s hypocritical about hiring an OC? Sounds like this is a guy that may have been interviewed and didn’t get the job.

Dabo wasn't given a choice about whether to go outside to find another coordinator or not. The powers that be have had enough of his family b.s. and ordered him to go get the best available for the position. It will be interesting to see how long Riley can stand the nepotism and goofiness that is Clemson, SC. My guess? 2 seasons max.

How is this newsworthy other than trying to flame Dabo? So he went outside the circle to grab a proven OC? Oh my

Does seem like a pretty literal interpretation of the "family" moto he throws around. Hate to defend Dabo but the vast majority of his staff have either been there a long time or are either Clemson guys or Alabama guys he had previously worked with. You hire one guy outside of the "Clemson Family" and you become a hypocrite on that point. Plenty of other crap he says that is hypocritical to be harping on the hiring of Garrett Riley. Probably some bitter coach who got outbid on Riley.

Ohio State always gets referenced in quotes like this when in reality they've just been another also-ran, akin to Oklahoma, for nearly a decade now. Clemson has had a far more successful program over recent history.

Sonny Dykes is pissed and not afraid who knows it. Well, as long as he can voice his displeasure anon.

Dabo Swinney also said that he'd quit coaching football if players got paid. Hypocritical is an excellent description for him.

Who knew you’d have to run your program like Bama or OSU to win? Shocking! Sour grapes on that guy.

So, you don’t believe in family if you hire a high quality coach from another program? That coach just sounds bitter.

Hiring an OC outside the Clemson umbrella is the antithesis of what Dabo has been preaching. He's been very vocal about promotion from within, and keeping the Clemson family intact.

Riley may be a great OC, but this isn't "on-brand."
