LSU coach Brian Kelly spoke with the media after his press conference on Tuesday and was asked about Barion Brown's catch vs. Clemson that was ruled incomplete and not a touchdown.

Kelly said that he did speak with SEC Coordinator of Officials John McDaid about the play, and that the conversation was "extremely productive."

quote:

"This thing has gotten away from us a little bit with so many replays in the NFL, and it's trickled down to college football, Kelly said."

"Are you a runner or are you a catcher of the football? It puts a burden on the wide receiver. He has to catch the football, and then he is a runner and has to survive the ground."

"Earlier in the game, Caden Durham came over the goalline, hit the ground, and the ball popped out. The runner doesn't have the same burden as a wide receiver."

"There is conversation about how we can make this cleaner. From a common-sense standpoint, it doesn't make much sense."

"The rule was applied correctly by the letter of it, but rules are made to be changed. Hopefully, down the road, there will be some changes in the way it is looked at."

"The crew administered the protocol and procedures the right way on that play."

He is playing the long game on this answer…..better for him not to make enemies. That was a catch though….100%

Good idea to not piss off the refs, but by the letter of the law was it applied correctly? After taking two steps, i don't think you are in the "act of catching the ball" anymore.

Once the ball crosses the pylon is it a TD.

Rule 2, Section 4, Article 3b. FR-34

b. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent) the player must maintain complete and continuous control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or in the end zone.

Rule sucks. Coaches make the rules, officials just apply them.

Geaux Tigers!

Yes we know that. But he was no longer in the act of catching it. He was a runner by that point.

If Bowers catch was a fumble, Browns was a TD. The inconsistency is what makes it so frustrating.

Where is all this passion coming from, from a self-proclaimed family man who has not the time to dabble in such silliness of a football game?

Still an idiot you are!

He is afraid to blast the refs who missed a targeting call on Bauer’s Fumble, Klubniak knee down on a throwaway to avoid a sack, the blown TD Catch, Clemson clock going backwards play starts at 1:46 goes to 1:48 in Q4 and then another play the clock started late on their last drive those were the obvious missed Calls! But hey SEC Bham office is always reviewing and grading refs…and I have ocean front property in Arizona! It was not a well called game!

Why was the Clemson receivers knee down catch a catch, but Brown’s wasn’t? He didn’t complete the catch either.

I highly doubt his answer would be the same had we lost.

They can slow down a replay and make anything look like movement.

From what I saw, I don’t agree that it was the correct call. However, they weren’t gonna overturn the call and there is nothing to be gained now by arguing over it. The only point was to bring visibility to the call and that has been done.

Wasn't that an all ACC crew? Well, I know it won't be said, but their calls favored the hell out of their ACC participant, and that great team still couldn't us.

Is it considered a continuation of the catch because the 2nd step was out of bounds? I think it becomes like a catch on a down and out and the WR comes down with one foot in bounds and then steps out and falls to the ground. I think if 2nd step was in bounds, it would've been a TD for sure.
I still think it was a TD, just trying to understand why it was looked at as a continuation of the catch.

So...do we have to wait a year to clarify this rule or can we fix it now that the game is over?

At least we can argue about this without unchecked anger...If we would have gone to overtime and lost, this board would break the internet. IN short, it must be brought to light!

He always talks about the game in the early week press conference. I'm sure he was asked about it.
